Can anyone recommend a good broadband provider in the UK, preferably without a download limit (although I realise it isn't strictly true with the fair-usage policy these days...
Preferably not really expensive either __________________

yeah I've been hunting for a few hours and I'm starting to feel like that
idnet had good reviews but they have a 30gb limit, depending on what sort of mood I'm in I can go through that in well under a month (note: nothing illegal ) __________________

I use Virgin Cable (using actual fibre cable and not copper). I've never hit any DL limits, and I do quite a bit of P2P (I also get 95% of the bandwidth at all times, doesn't seem to be traffic shaping where I am!)

What ****es me off is that from around 6pm till 10.30pm I go from download speeds of 850kilobytes/s to 60kilobytes/s (bytes not bits), that's a huge difference - a giant pain in the ass if you're downloading something off i-tunes or direct2drive. __________________

Telewest used to be one until Virgin bought it and merged it with ntl killing competion and icnreasing the price. It simply went tdown the s**t.

I've just took the plunge and switched to Be Broadband (bethere.co.uk), their 24 meg unlimited pro package for 22 quid a month.
Spot on service so far, constant updates on what's going on how my order is and a line test that tells me i'm gonna get 22meg down and 2.5meg up on their ADSL2+ upload plus package once the switchover is complete. (I live just about within line of sight of my exchange).
Waiting to see how it turns out. I've only seen a couple of bad reviews from people who seem to whinge constantly, and type sentences in caps with fifteen exclamation marks every three words.
Mainly all the complanining is about speed because they live 500AU from their phone exchange, so I'm hoping the service will be good.
Will let you know

I'm with virgin media, I wouldn't recommend it (any of the phone, cable and tv services).
What about be? They're meant to be very good, or at least very fast, but I have no personal experience. If you haven't already check out the site formally known as adslguide.

I'm looking at Adsl24 at the moment, but you are right, the current deals suck! Good old corperat gouging!
I say prep for dustoff, nuke the site from orbit...

I've just switched to IDnet from Pipex. Much better service. OK, I had no cap limit with Pipex but they blocked ports so it made no difference anyway. With IDnet I get 30GB peak time limit (9am - midnight) plus 30GB offpeak limit (midnight - 9am). So if you download lots of torrents (IDnet don't block ports... yet) then you can mix between before and after midnight. The only problem with IDnet is they're expensive (ú34.99 per month for the Home Premium service which I'm on).
If you don't fancy that then I've heard Zen and Nildram are both good.

I looked at IDNet but their prices seemed kinda high.
The only thing that puts me off Nildram is this:
Quote: To ensure everyone gets a fair share of our High Performance we have implemented a 'Transfer Allowance Policy' for Peak Time transfer allowance - this applies to data transferred between the hours of 8am and Midnight, seven days a week. Once the allowance is hit, users will still be able to connect - but limited to 64Kbps transfer rate.

I've been with Be on their value package for the last 6 months or so. No problems to speak of, and no download limit. Three things to watch out for if you want to sign on with them:
1. By default, they send you a wireless router. 2. If you don't use it, you don't qualify for their tech support. 3. If you switch isp, they charge you ú100 for it unless you send it back to them.
I use my own router, and I haven't had any issues. They do have a FUP, but it's very simple: you get one warning if you DL 'too much' (no exact amounts mentioned) and if you don't co-operate, they can cut you off almost immediately.
Some people have expressed concerns about the long-term viability of this ISP, as almost all other ISPs in the same price bracket have introduced monthly download caps. I'd still say go for it - they'll probably last another year, and if they go downhill after that at least you don't get stung by the 12-month minimum term when you switch. This. I used telewest AND ntl fine until virgin got involved. Never had a worse ISP.
I'm using Sky broadband now and it's nippy with no caps and very little downtime. 7 months of good service, to be fair.

hahahhahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, it was a nightmare wasn't it.
i wouldnt recomand virging because they closed the eve port in some parts of the uk, not sure why. their internet is no longer cosntant, so you will get disconnected and loose too many packets. the speed is fine, but the contineuty of the service is more important.

Nildram are owned by Pipex now.
Look for an ADSL2/LLU provider in your area that isn't bulldog (their CS record is rubbish). I have ADSL2 from sky and its been fine, however there are a crap load of complaints about them on the tubes so meh.

this. in my experience, Virgin, when it was blueyonder, used to be really good, never had any speedcaps, disconnects, outages, etc, was solid. Since vigin have taken over i had a 3 week period of high instability. I still get 20 Mb in a basic download, but what good is speed if the performance drops to levels where playing FPS is impossible, playing eve is impossible, downloading music and surfing content rich websites is impossible...
it shows that i rely too much on the web i suppose, but anyhow...
quite honestly i'd pay what i do for a 20Mb line for a 1Mb line if it was guaranteed to be up and have a high performance, only i hear such deals are out of reach of anyone but the rich :(

Something I learnt an awful long time ago:
Buy a business connection.
Infinitely better support, no download limits and far better throughput at peak times. Some providers even have packages that rival residential pricing.

What's the cost though? Here in the States anything with "Business" attached to it adds at least an order of magnitude to the cost.

ú19.99/month + VAT.
I get about 2Mbit on-peak and 6.5Mbit off-peak on an ADSL connection that syncs to 7Mbit.

I hear good things about Plusnet if you are using your connection mainly for gaming as they prioritise gaming traffic.
Couple of people I know in EvE use it with good results.
Myself I use Virgin (ex Telewest area) have had very few problems with them and even their so called 'traffic managment' hasn't yet hit me and I download a lot of bittorrent stuff.
Being in an ex Telewest area seems to be important though as most of the people that complain about Virgin are in ex Ntl areas, seems Telewest invested more in their network than Ntl did. -------------------------------------------

i'm with newnet at the moment, they're generally good, but their download caps are a bit crap. i've resorted to running netmeter so i don't end up going over my allowance and incurring huge punitive bills. AGAIN.
their customer service, speeds and prices are all good though, there's no throttling, and it's a 1 month rolling contract so they might be worth a squirt.
EDIT: you might want to see if you're in their 24meg catchment area though. its mainly around the south coast atm.
other than that Zen are really good if you're made of money.
