Hey, I'm Ardanius Lightbringer, a proud Amarrian.
I want to fly Amarr ships, so I was wondering could anyone here give me advice? I'm in a frigate doing some level 1 missions at the moment, haven't had any major trouble so far.
I've read about people saying Amarr are bad in PVP, is it completely true?

Hi and welcome to Eve.
I wouldn't say that Amarr are bad in PVP, but they have been nerfed quite a lot in past patches and expansions. Even so, the punisher is by far one of the best frigates in the game, and is an excellent PVP ship. Check out the ships and modules forum for some ideas on how you can use it in PVP.

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 07/02/2008 00:00:30 Amarr has actually been buffed several times in the past year or so. They've gotten more HP and lots more cap. The problem is that other races are still seen as superior to Amarr because Amarr ships are mostly one-trick ponies - all tank or all gank and little room for alternative or unconventional fits. At least FINALLY they added the Khanid changes which diversified Amarr ships a bit.
The capacitor issue is Amarr's biggest hindrance. You HAVE to train controlled bursts to 5 when you start getting into larger ships, because battleships run out of cap within a few minutes just by running their guns. If the fight starts going against you and you get put on the defense, you may have trouble keeping your tank with your diminished capacitor.
Amarr battleships are popular in fleet fights though, where safety in numbers means that while one is being primaried, the rest unleash waves of catastrophic damage on the opponents. If I remember right the Abaddon with Tachs has the highest DPS of any battleship, assuming the range is right. Or maybe it was just the highest DPS of any battleship fitted with long range guns (in which case the Hyperion or Mega with neutrons would probably have the highest DPS at short range.)

New amarr buff appraoching also Dev Blog
I don't fly amarr being an equally proud Minmatar but I have heard some swear by amarr ships and others slate them. I don't doubt they take a lot of work to excel in though.

If you do dedicate to training Amarr, cross-train with Minmatar. Putting artillery on Amarr ships that don't get RoF or damage bonuses to their lasers can make tactical sense in some cases, especially if you want all your cap to focus on tank.

I've had my butt handed to me by all four races of Eve in about equal measure.
Cheers Falka

zealot makes nano ships run
(although they were probably not snaked ones)
well at least can tank a ishtars drones long enough to get the ishtar to run off, or pop
and against a nano zealot, well its armor melted, but it was fast enough to get out of my gun range and warp off.
*note all my testing was done on the test server a few days ago as I dont actually have a zealot right now*
although the other day we did have a vaga come harass us, and our zealot pilot made him go running.
and sitting still in a battleship with a 15km optimal range is great for gate camping. especially when you are sitting in caldari space and they come in with a raven

Amarr are not bad for PvP, for a few reasons:
1) In roaming gangs, they're not nearly as versatile as Minmatar. However, they do have several good ships - the Zealot is swift and packs a punch for the kind of speeds it can get, and is getting buffed in a patch soon. The BC/BS lineup of Amarr, if passive-tanked, can absorb an excellent amount of damage before going down, much like the Gallente heavy ships, but while they don't hurt quite as much as the Gallente they are able to bake shield tankers quite well. Arguably 2nd out of the races in this regard.
2) Khanid; the Amarr shipline on the whole got boosted by this addition, giving them a set of missile-focused ships, which do not have set damage types. Ships like the Sacrilege do decent damage and tank pretty well, while the Curse is being boosted with the next patch with enhanced effectiveness of tracking disruptors.
3) They're sexy. Seriously, between the golden shine of a T2 Amarr ship, the mix of yellow and red that is the Carthum lineup, or the dark, dark purple that is Khanid, they're just a very nice race of ships to look at. Some people cite this as a reason they can't fly Caldari or Minmatar, because they just don't like the way the ships look - if you're one of these people, you'll be fine with the gold .
All in all, this is among the best times in the game's history to start as Amarr, the only other notable time being the era of GankGeddons .

How does one passive tank an armor tanker? I've looked at the setups in Ships & Mods and all have an Armor Repper which I believe qualifies as an active tank. Am I wrong? If so can you please explain a passive Armor tank setup and give an example?

It's not so much a tank as a massive buffer. You fit armor plates along with a damage control and resist mods to get as many effective HP as possible. Most amarr gank ships will do this as you need a lot of cap to run the big lasers, have a MWD and be able to actually last through the whole fight. -=^=- "Someday the world will recognize the genius in my insanity." |

Buffer-tanking Amarr ships, at least the BC and BS classes, they're very hard to break through. It also frees up their cap for weapons use, and makes them more resistant to nos/neuts.

It works amazingly well on the Abaddon. With some 1600mm RT and EANMII's, those things take a godly amount of damage to bring down. -----sig-starts-here------

In any case ... as I found out when I got my Thorax done in by a Punisher because - he knew what he was doing - and I didn't ...
It is the skills of the pilot that really matter, both those bought and trained and those gained from experience.
If you are really good at what you do, know your ship and how to use it - and know the enemies ship and how to defeat it ... or when to run away from it ... you can fly almost anything and ... at least do better than expected. Most of the guys who blew my ships up - knew they had won before they started just by doing a scan of my modules and looking at how old my character was.
So - if you like Amarr ships ... or you're just proud to be Amarrian ... have at it. YOU are far more important than the hardware you're using.
Just ... expect to get blown up a lot ... by all those people who've been at it a while until you've been at it a while too ... cause ... that's is what is going to happen. Getting blown up is a learning experience ... try to treat it as one (however ticked off you may get ...).
