1. Right now, stations maintain a "far" orbit of planets and moons. I think it would be cool to have stations maintain a "close" or "inner" orbit to planets and moons so we can really experience the enormity of them. Check out this picture to see what I am talking about. This is what you would see when undocking from a station or just simply warping to a planet.

Now I'm not saying that the graphics would have to look that good but you can clearly see the size of the planet compared to whats in game when near a station.
2. Also, it would be cool to see some earth like planets in the game. With the visible atmospheric "glow" so to speak. Visible liquid water and clouds as well. It seems that all the planets in the game are uninhabitable by humans without some sort of containment field. I know that most planets and moons are uninhabitable but it would be nice to throw a few habitable ones in here and there for eye candy purposes.
3. Planetary satellite/beacons surounding planets and moons that you can warp to while in inner orbit. These beacons would have rats around them that you can grind on and would be another place you could hang out and play instead of asteriod belts.
This would also be a good way to avoid warping "through" planets and moons. If you are trying to warp to something and a planet is in the way, your ship will stop at the planet and place you in inner orbit. You must then use the beacons to get around it. This would also reduce AFK autopiloting as well I would imagine.
Now, you wouldnt have to warp to each individual beacon seperately. You can bring up the solar system map/mini map and then click on the planet to zoom in. You would be able to see all the beacons and stations around the planet. Right click on the beacon or station you want to go to and set destination. Hit autopilot and your ship will automatically warp around the planet following the beacons till you get to your destination.
Yea yea, I hear people aready saying that this would be way too tedious and time consuming. But I think it adds a little realism to the game. And its not like you warp through planets all the time. Plus, I think it would be an awesome site warping around a planet in "inner" orbit.
Just some thoughts and ideas I have been thinking about. Thanks for reading. :) let me know what you think.

Edited by: Adarr on 07/02/2008 19:27:20 I quite agree with you on the looks of habitable planets. It would be an amazing sight to see entire continants and clouds and such from a close distance. Granted, some planets already look habitable as we can see blue oceans or the lights of mega-cities, but they don't really have the same "atmospheric" look as we do in that photo you posted.
I've taken my inty and spent time flying to planets and such, eventually reaching their surface (and going right through), and it doesn't really feel like a planet.. more like a hunk of rock floating there. Of course, gravity isn't really modeled in the game, nor are landable planets, so I can't really complain about that. I know one of the "planned features" is to eventually have planets to land on and build structures on, colonize, etc. Likely it won't be implemented for a long time yet, though.
As for the warping through planets, I certainly agree SOMETHING must be done (I once showed EVE to a friend and he was impressed, but it broke his suspension of disbelief when I warped through a moon to dock at a station. "Did you just fly THROUGH that planet?! HAHA!"). I'm not sure about the whole beacons idea though, it might be over-complicating it. A good compromise would be to have the ship warp towards the planet until it got into a close orbit distance, and then pull a long orbiting arc around the planet with it's warp drive still active, but at a reduced speed (something like 0.1 AU/s). Once the ship is on the other side of the planet, it would quickly resume its normal course and warp speed, all without dropping out of warp in the first place.

Yea, that would work too. I still like the beacon idea though because it will give the player something else to do and somewere else to go besides asteroid belts. Giving more content to the solar systems.
I constructed a photo using the program Celestia further explaining to "inner" orbit idea.
