they are a terrorist breeding ground...LOL.. actually not so funny...
Terrorists MMO
The funny thing is that I have always wondered how all this spying would cover chatting and interaction in online games. I just never wanted to say anything and give Big Brother ideas... especially considering they never react with any kind of logical solution.
CCP please do everything you can to lobby against this invasion, considering what DHS if doing to other industries it is in all of our interests to nip this in the bud.

Whoa, deja vu.
Who was the gaming author that wrote this article like a year or 2 ago?
He was talking about sleeper cells in games like wow exchanging information and what not but there was a big joke that nothing ever got done because the sleepers just needed another couple minutes for that epic raid.... Unsuitable signature removed. Navgator

ive always wondered if there is any organized crime being... well... organized through mmos.
all kinds of stuff from the common human/arms/drug dealing to whatever sick plan might occur to whoever could be set up using trial characters in mmos.
well, if youre serious about it, probably the best you can do is proper encryption and normal emails anyway, right? i mean.. you CAN encrypt stuff in a way you can trust it to be decrypted YEARS later, when it doesnt matter anymore, right?
but anyways. since the days of UO ive been asking myself how many RL-crimes is actually set up in virtual worlds. as WoW grows bigger and bigger every day the anonymity you can get there gets better, too.

I would of thought most serious organised criminals would use a more secure medium for their plotting. But saying that macro-miners and ISKfarmers are breaking the games rules and count as criminals in my eyes..And they seem very organised.

It is not that annoymous though, it does not take much effort to track down/ID the person behind the avatar.

Edited by: Avery Fatwallet on 07/02/2008 18:39:33 well what about your neighbourhood dope dealer for instance.
im not talking pablo escobar here, but rather jimmy from next door tryin to make some extra cash or something like this..
wouldnt -in that case- a trial char in a random mmo be more secure than a cell phone? or something like that?
oh and please. ffs. its "should/could/would HAVE". i can stand this. native speakers butchering their language :(
edit: im pretty sure you can be VERY anonymous with trial characters. public hotspots or proxies or whatever... im no expert. but im sure one can cover his tracks. if he tries to.

You should be more worried about BoB spies in your corp's forums.
Just what do you need to hide? You think using the word smart-bomb is going to trigger an FBI raid of your home? That would be funny.
The aim of politics is to keep the populace alarmed and clamorous to be saved by menacing it with imaginary hobgoblins. The urge to save humanity is a false front for the urge to rule it. |

Is text traffic encrypted between you and CCP (or Blizzard and so on)? I suspect not.
In which case the government likely is listening in on what you are typing (see Carnivore). Even if they did give up on Carnivore they are likely using something not to mention what the CIA/NSA/MI:5/Whoever use.
I would think coordinating your misdeeds via an MMO would be an awful way to go about it. Who knows what things CCP could have flagged? I doubt they will chase down one guy smoking a blunt but if some pedos and such got on there I bet they'd let authorities know.

i wouldnt bet on encryption. simply on anonymity.
eve on a flash drive, get internet access someplace that cant be connected to you... and well.. i bet authorities can have a hard time tracking you down, if you really try.
also, maybe not today. but what about "back in the day"? you really think ANY fed would have thought of spying on ye towne of trinsic?

Let's say they get wind of some bad guys using EVE to coordinate evil deeds. It is not too hard to quietly let the authorities know. Then they track everyone who the bad guys are talking to. Even if you paid with time cards bought anonymously they can log the ip and zero in on you. Then someday when the bad guy is accessing EVE from a coffee shop he will find the other customers are all Feds.
If nothing else it would allow them to listen in on all the planning and get them somewhere else/foil them/whatever.
Point being if you are a bad guy you just do not want the Feds listening in at all and I doubt an MMO provides the kind of security they are after. Perhaps it once was sneaky but I am sure the Feds have thought about it.

I imagine they if the information was valuable enough, they wouldn't touch the guy on the MMO until his value ran out. I would much rather mine the information and go after the hit men and higher ups instead of going of a middle man.

Encrypted traffic does nothing but draw attention to you. Groups that insist on encrypted e-mail communications allow suitably equipped interested parties to map their social networks. That information is usually more useful than message content. Think of it as tracer dye.
MMOs are as good a place to hide as any, but I am not sure they are intrinsically better than any other environment. It can be hit and miss and often down to luck, but once one person gets busted, everyone else follows. It will not be difficult to fold them into the same arrangements that exist with ISPs, and the process was probably underway years ago.

Not really, cell phones are fine as long as you only stick to text messages. Most dealers will simply use code words buried in a text message to communicate, the cops don't care that much about jimmy next door selling a couple of ounces of weed, you've got to be moving a significant quantity to even come onto their radar

They aren't talking about aaaaaaaarabs. They are talking about those unpatriotic think for themselves people that prefer not to be taxed when they move goods. The fact that there is a Washington post article on it now means that an estimated good chunk of change is moving through that guerrilla capitalist system and they wanna get their hands on it. The "Cry Terrorist" bit is to scare up consent from the public at large. _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. I'm not sure if the US has a similar law but here in the UK we have the Data Protection Act. Wouldn't the DPA (for anyone in the know) protect UK players from outside unauthorised scrutiny?
