Ok, I'll bite.
I was there when the big LV/allies attacked C-J to try to finish off RA. Our corp had wandered into KOS, having just left Fix because they had become Bob pets. I remember stitting at a pos in my Carrier, fixing ships as they warped in from attacking an RA pos.
LV had mustered 40+ Capital ships for this siege. Lag was bad, but in retrospect it was still playable. As LV assulted one RA pos, RA jumped in Caps and engaged. LV Dreads started disconnecting, only to be scanned down and killed by RA gangs looking for just such activity. The first pos fell, at a cost of 5 Dreads.
I sat repairing ships as the LV fleet reassembled at the pos. Fully expecting a further assult, as this was RA's last system, I was inspired to see the 50+ allied Capitals forming up in space.
Then...all at once...the entire LV Capital fleet cyno'd out.
The losses were 'too high' and the lag 'too bad' to continue, I was told. As I watched those jump effects, I knew we had lost the war. Our corp left KOS shortly after.
So how does RA compare to LV?
1> RA fought, risking it all at every encounter. LV had 3x the numbers, and couldn't take a bloody nose. Today, the Coalition don't care how much they lose, as long as Bob dies. No real comparison.
2> The LV group was so stuck up that they wouldn't let others bring non-capitals to the pos to fight. We had literally a thousand pilots in surrounding systems, who had been ordered out to try to improve lag. Today, Goonswarm will have everyone fighting, regardless of alliance. I spent 2 hours trying to get an invite, and I was in a Carrier, but LV was too vain to invite non-LV to the gang. So I fixed ships instead. Again, no real comparison.
3> LV was waging a war for conquest, as far as I could tell. Honestly, our Corp was just looking for its first 0.0 home at the time. We had bounced through a few alliances in that search, and had just accepted KOS's offer of the N7- station. Little did we know it had just been taken from RA 2 weeks earlier, and that we were on the front lines as cannon fodder. The various alliances fighting RA had no common uniting factor, unlike those fighting against Bob today. Yes, the numbers were high on the LV side, but LV was too high and mighty to work with the other alliances for common goals - the only goals that mattered were LV's. Today, the Coalition is united in its distaste for Bob. I'll try to be impartial on this point and agree that RA is a lot like LV at that time: There is a bit of vanity in the actions of RA which precludes any real reward for others that have fought with them. LV treated its allies with open distain, while RA seems to just ignore the contribution of lesser coalition members.
In the end, RA survived because they had the will to fight and because they put it all on the line everytime. This time, the Coalition has a strong Will to fight and is ignoring losses as they pursue the goal. Its not the numbers that will determine the war, but rather the strength of Will.
