And what is it good for? I am pretty new and I can't make heads or tails of whether the ship is worth investing some time in. The bonuses seem neat but I don't know how useful thay will really be.

In today's nano-era, hyenas are simply amazing for small gangs.
in the mids put a Target Painter, 2 webs, and a MWD. You now have a frigate who can double web a vagabond from 20km away while your interceptor warp jams from 20km away. Uncloak the bomber you had chilling nearby and WTFPWN that poor ******* in the nanoed/snake/polycarbed vaga. Then snicker the next time you read some carebear whine about how vagas are overpowered.
Hyena/Stiletto/Hound = one of the most viciously evil, brutally effective - and yet remarkably cheap - 3 man gangs you can put together.

your not gonna web at 20km due to eliptical orbits and agility so please discount 20km being your orbit distance. and how many pilots will go for EAS V ?
yes its going to get butt****** by a vaga as barrage will be smaking your hull in no time at all.
I was playing in alliance today and try as i might there was no way i could lock down and web a fast moving inty going 7kms+ as i just couldnt catch the bastard. Mwoarrr range on the web PLZZZZZZ and compared to the other EAS its "range" is certainly underbalanced
The new EAS class is certainly more a support role and really good to have in gangs as a complimnentary ship.
compared to the others I think the hyena is the only one that needs to be well within scram range of its enemy and well within barrage range (although thats a racial thing)
DPS and tank wise i would say all EAS fail in this category

The no bonus to warp disruption range is moot.

Oh My Deity !
Heat always adds a new dimension to stuffÖ
Heat+faction makes webs potentially very very very overpoereed. ECM (kitsune) is always gonna have the top advantage but if CCP ever gave a player rtre the ease of having a web going 40-50km he forums would explode. Heat and TII webbers wil acause a wnew dimentsion to this dwbate :/

Heat 4tw.
Can overheat my mwd to hit 9000 in order to catch faster ships. 20 km web overheated hits 26 km.
orbiting at 17 km going 4800 m/s would require a tracking speed of .28 rad/sec.
T2 dual 180's with perfect skills only get .165. Then you have to add 2 tracking computers to get it that high.
Biggest problem is the vagabond getting up to full speed is tricky to tackle. Miz Stelth Bomerz iz the ****nit. |

from extensive use on test i found
med t2 extender/scram/web/mwd mapc/speed mods/cpr highs doesnt matter but i go 2x rockets/200mm ac speed rigs
was the best option at tackling, vagas, crows, other ceptors for the sole fact the hp buffer need to tank them as they slow down and before you can get set into your orbit.without them 1 mistake to a vaga, railranis, precision fitted crow and you end up going down faster than jenna Jameson

Edited by: Cautet on 11/02/2008 11:13:42 I prefer double web med extender MWD. Can put rigs on it if you like but even with a med extender it still dies really easily due to its role.
The ship has some drawbacks, one of which is the cap if you use MWD + a scram dies very quickly.
It's not a replacement for an interceptor, and its really really not a solo ship.
What advantage it does have is the locking speed.
In my view if you put one of these in a bubble with another ship sensor boosting you and you really get to see it's role.

For this ship to work, you just need gear and skills. Gistii mwd domination disruptor domination web rigs EAS5
Set orbit so that you will stay at around 28k, web + scram = dead nanoship. Vaga's wont hit you as you are too far away, missiles will miss too (14k with decent skills and no implants at all).
Just run for rapiers/huginns and you'll be fine. Ship will set you back 700-800m in total but it will not die very quickly while effectively taking out those pesky nanoships.

You are correct, but you are also addressing a problem I already addressed.
The Hyena is not a solo ship. Noticve in my scenario the hyena was in a 3 man gang. The 1st member of that gang being a tackling ceptor to put a point on the vaga. The vaga will be attacking the ceptor...then put the double webs of the hyena on. Assuming you are overheating your webs (and if you're not, stop what you're doing and train up heat right now), you can web from outside 20km. Then, uncloak the bomber and hammer the vaga with your DPS mate. The fact that the hyena isn't using the warp disruptor eliminates (or at least greatly reduces) the cap problems mentioned above. The hyena is a truly awesome ship, but again, it isn't for solo work, it needs a gang to be effective, otherwise it's just another paper target sitting on a fence.

The Kitsune is best, but so good for its own good it will be primary and secondary.
Hyena is a clear second, and extremly good at what it does. Much faster compared to Huginn and Rapiers, you best bet at catching them "nano-fags"
With the new TD changes, Sentinel will be a good EAS. Leaving that gallente thing, whatever its called on a secure last place.

The hyena is excellent in empire wars to tackle and web stuff jumping in through a gate. It gets even better with a few remove sensor boosters on it.
Basically its a very good tackler, but thats about it. It wont to much good except tackling (very little dps). The Kitsune on the other hand can pretty much permajam a BS so its very good in the fight, but less good at tackling.

Ever seen a huginn go 1on1 against a vaga? Im sure you have and it ended badly for the vaga. ever seen a *well flown* vaga rush a huginn and get within 10-15km and start shooting? Doesn't happen often, but it's always funny to watch a huginn reliase how outclassed he is.
Also, from around 30km, a vaga will do about 80DPS (20-30%) with barrage and skills (not taking into account rigs). A hyena will not be able to stand up to that. Factor in 5 light drones and it gets progressively worse. If a nano ship freaks out when it see's a specialised webber, they will die. However if they engage their brain (and overview since they should have one for web ships and drones) then they can take a few ships with them before they go down, or sometimes take down the webber and escape.
Lesson i learned the hard way: Shoot the rapier before it gets a chance to lock, dont try and burn away. -------

The Hyena is a fast and nimble tackler. I will agree with those that caution about getting a tad too close to Vagas and pilots with maxxed gun/tracking skills. I made the mistake of manually flying just within range of a barrage/220mm Vulcan II equipped ship and it went SPLAT fast. The fact my transversal was not as high as it should have been was my bad and I paid for it.
Of course, I don't necessarily mind losing an EAS if it means we take down a Vaga or a HIC.
The Hyena will go 4k rigged and a lot faster if you also have a snake set. Its a tad cheaper than an Inty and Kitsunes ROCK ewar for the price. -------------------------------

I agree that the Kitsune is the best. I have a corpmate who flys it and brought it out for some non-consensual pvp... It did a damn good job! He was able to tackle a Brutix, jam him and we were able to take it down, Drake and Wolf doing the DPS. Generally he was able to tackle a few ships and use the EWar as his "tank". Something I would not believed to work unless I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.
EAS + AF + SB = lots of good fun. As someone said above.

I've been flying one of these for a few weeks while training up my Stealth Bomber skills. So far I have mixed feelings on it, and I think it's mostly due to the role you need to take with it. I think it is ideal for small gangs and skirmish warfare in a fast gang for lowsec ganking and other anti-carebear activities. I've had a lot of fun doing this, and it's made my decision to train up for a Huginn for larger fleet action.
Where the Hyena really suffers is any type of fleet -vs- fleet combat because you are a serious pain in the butt and all but a few seconds of a HAC's time to remove from the battlefield. So keep that in mind when your gang decides to take on a combat ship heavy fleet, as you most likely will be going home minus your Hyena.

Small cap booster prevents any kind of neut doing in this ship, and seeing as the cap in it is amazing in the first place......
Secondly, this is the best EAS ship, kitsune dies quickly to my hyena btw. No tank and MUCH MUCH slower=dead when web hit.
With good thermo skills i can get 3-4 cycles with two webs overheated. Alot more with only one overheated to "snag" the ship getting into orbit.
Did I mention with the two small light launchers you can smack down drones pretty good. Miz Stelth Bomerz iz the ****nit. |

I have a question regarding the Hyena and its Target Painting bonus. I noticed that most loadouts do not use a TP at all, and I have quite familiar the the majority argument that either a.) TP is borked and has no real use, b.) That any effectiveness is specific only to smaller ships like frigates and light cruisers, and those situations can be handled better by webs, and the minority argument that they are a "dark horse" module that deserves more attention.
My understanding of effects of Target Painters are as follows: 1. Decreases Locking time 2. Improves chance to hit for turrets 3. Increases damage done by missiles (so long as they are able to hit)
On the math calculations, I think the following is how its calculated? If S = Signature Radius of Target TP = Target Painter Signature bonus SF = Signature Focusing Skill (Advanced Target Painting Skill) EW = Electronic Warfare Ship Skill MWD = Signature boost due to Microwarp Drive CS = Combat Signature
CS = ((S * MWD(5))* TP) * ((1 + (SF * 0.05) * (1 + (EW * 0.075))
So, if I am correct (and please verify), a Ship with a 36m Sig radius (a typical interceptor sig) with the best of skills would show up similar to a Battleship. So long as its being TP'ed by one TP, in a Hyena, with the best possible skillset. With just the MWD alone, the ship only shows up to have a cruiser sized sig (approx. 150).
The other comparision is range. A webifier has a max range using a E-war ship is about 30+ (adding Heat), whereas a TP's range is about 75+ (adding Heat).
All I can think of, is that, ideally, you would have one webifier, and one TP. The webifier would of course reduce the transversal significantly for medium turrets to improve the hit (but will still miss a fair amount of time because of such a small sig radius), and the TP to counteract the small sig. This is all assuming your small fleet includes BC, Cruisers, and Battleships.
Any clarifying thoughts?

Hyena is able to do something that no other ship can do, stop a nano ship from mwding back to the gate. You'll catch a lot of ships that your gang might miss otherwise. (Yeah, a triple sensor boosted Huginn or Rapier too but then it's a chitty fit.)
Hyena's make me afraid.
