The only problems i have been having like that i managed to fix by checking if eve wasent on DEP list under advanced system settings, or the Firewall had Eve blocked. So you might check one of those

I run eve with DEP turned on with no problems.

Try turning Norton of, rather than making EVE an exception, just to see, norton is rather a crappy program in my opinon excecpt it anti virus
Eve works just fine with Vista so I doubt that its that

I had this problem last week when i made a short cut from the wrong link under games (i used the blue square when i should have used the one with the abso on it).
Games > Eve Online > Customise > Edit (play eve) > compatibility tab, check that's both running as an admin and in compatibility mode for xp sp2, got it working for me. Norton shouldn't disrupt eve, but if you really want to be sure uninstall it and put avast on instead. ***The EVE servers and their patches*** |

It seems that some Vista installations change the font path or that the EVE client can't find it. It's been known to happen after installing some third party applications ( complete list unknown but Office is one of them, a font pack there may be causing this )
A solution for this can be found on our forums here: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=503274
Do note that this requires editing your registry which is not recommended unless you know exactly what you are doing. We can unfortunately not take responsibility for an problems that occur after doing so.

I just had this problem a short time ago today and so found this thread. I didn't install anything between the time EVE was working and when it couldn't start up anymore. In my case, I left my EVE client going while I did some chores around the house and came back to change my skill. When I clicked in the window I got "Connection Lost" and was returned to the main login screen. However, checking server status never found the server so I closed the client completely and reopened. That's when I ran into this issue of EXEFile.exe is running in task manager using around 65k of memory but trying to switch to that window didn't do anything (it's like it wasn't there).
I noticed in task manager that there was an extra EXEFile.exe running that didn't seem to be doing anything so I stopped that process. Tried to launch EVE and ran into the problem described in this thread. Rebooted same problem.
I tried checking my shortcut properties to ensure I was linked to the correct place (nothing had changed but you never know) and that checked out.
Tried checking Windows XP SP2 under compatibility and that didn't help.
Finally decided to check 640x480, disable visual themes, and run in 256 colors. It worked this time! Yes the game looked horrible running that way but I could see the login screen and was able to login.
Went back and unchecked 640x480 and 256 color options but left disabled visual themes checked. Still worked OK. Not sure if visual theme was an issue for me or not. I think it was forcing 640x480 and 256 colors that helped me. Once it worked that way the first time it now seems to work normally again.

I have the exact same system as you, I also have Office installed and Eve works perfectly.
Unfortunetly I dont have any advice, possibly run the windows repair utility.

I just started having the same exact problem. EVE as working fine for me last night and this morning before server down. I come back home from work and go to log in and all I get is the splash screen, client closes about 30 seconds after that.
I tried the solution in the other referenced thread but my Vista install already has the Fonts entry in the Registry so that solution is useless to me.
Has anyone had this problem and found away around it? I've disabled my firewall, I've made sure I am running in compatibility mode with admin rights, and all that good stuff. Everything seems to be set up how it is supposed to be, the game just does not want to start up anymore.

Try switching your theme to classic and see if that gets it to run
