I getting long delays on starting up - just sits there and grinds the harddrive for about 3 to 4 min's for each account. Just started to have this problem within last major patch.
Things I have tried: * deleted cache * defragment the harddrive
Things I haven't tried: * Delete Eve * Reformat Harddrive
Help?

Same here. It started just recently. Switching themes from aero to classic helps a little, but but doesn't fix it.

I had the same thing so I deleted the cashe dir in total via windows explorer delete and not from the "clear all cashe files" button on the Eve exit window. Eve client re-generates the cashe dir on startup. I also cleaned out all of the logs from My Documents\EVE\logs. These two actions seemed to have done the trick.
The cashe dir is at C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE
My Op System is XP Pro sp2 + microsoft fixes. I hope this helps

Fritz, do you just delete everything in that cache folder? I see some different things in there like some patches and various folders. The only folders of any significant size are Pictures (63 MBs) and MachoNet (108 MBs); the rest are either empty or have less than 10 MBs. Can you just Select All and delete this stuff without damaging anything? -- Meridius Dex --

Meridius, It seems you can delete the entire dir without harm. The patch files in the cashe have already been installed into Eve.exe etc so deleting them is harmless. The Picture and MachoNet etc dirs are re-created on client start and start growing in content from then on. I assume it is working on the "you might need them in the future" principle just like other speed things up cashe processes used in the software world. If you like just rename your current cashe dir to say xcashe and restart the client. A brand-new and shinny cashe will appear and start growing. If all goes wrong delete cashe and rename xcashe back to cashe. This is what I did in the first place to find out what was slowing things down. CCP don't seem to have put a size limit on cashe size so it will grow forever. The slowdown problem is probably caused by either having masses of cashe files or "old" cashe files which are not quite compatible with a new patch.

I don't seem to have a Local Settings folder in C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\. Is that the correct path?
In that folder I only have Contacts, Desktop, Favorites, My Documents, Start Menu, and WINDOWS folders, even when I 'show hidden'. Any ideas?
I'm using XP.

Eksist, First make sure that you do have ôHidden files and folders û Show hidden files and foldersö selected. If you have, are you playing on a Network at work/college etc? If you are it could be that you donÆt have local admin rights on your PC and your IT admin staff have overridden your ability to set Show hidden etc via the Network security settings. If you are on your own PC at home then make sure you have admin rights via the control panel û> User Accounts û then set your account as a Computer Administer. That should do the trick.
