Nano Vagabond/Sleipnir/Ishtar/Cerberus/etc, non-Pilgrim force recons, pure-gank blaster Deimos/Astarte/etc, any random ship with a cyno + carriers. Your goal is to hit the target, gank it in under 30 seconds, grab the loot, and be gone before backup arrives. Force recons are excellent support, and a good backup plan, bring a Falcon along and the hunter very quickly becomes the hunted.
Battleships are usually poor choices, as they're too slow, both in movement and in locking. HACs and command ships give you almost as much firepower, but are much more suited to the gank and get out role.

Whoever said Caldari are bad for small-gang PvP is insane. See the other thread on this page for a complete list, I'm not going to type it out again. But let's just say the Falcon is awesome in small gangs, and plenty of the other ships aren't far behind.
Quote: Also in another thread people mention that a Drake has pathetic DPS, what exactly is considered good or "acceptable" DPS for a PVP/Pirate ship?
Ideally, over 1000 dps as a decent minimum (from your entire gang). For solo, I wouldn't bother flying anything with less than 500 dps unless it has some really compelling advantages to make up for it. Your target's lifespan should be measured in seconds once you jump in, because that's all you have. The moment you show up, he's screaming for backup, even if he isn't bait in a trap. And if you find a target, every other pirate in the system is right behind you with the same plan of ganking it... and they won't have any regrets about ganking you as well.
By the way, you aren't looking for fair fights as a pirate. Damage output is your primary concern, with speed and ewar second. Tank should be almost irrelevant, you should be ganking the target before they even have a chance to shoot back. And don't feel bad about dropping a 5v1 on someone, that's how you should be operating.
