Yeah I'm sure someone will say this belongs in Ships and Mods but they'd be wrong as pirates do a good deal of PVPing of the Non-Blob variety.
Now that we've established that I am in fact asking in the correct place, which ships are best for PVP?
I know that Caldari are generally bad for PVP of the solo or small gang variety due to reliance on a shield tank, the exception being perhaps the T2 Frigates. Also in another thread people mention that a Drake has pathetic DPS, what exactly is considered good or "acceptable" DPS for a PVP/Pirate ship?
So again which ships are best for PVP and why?

What kind of piracy, and what kind of PVP?
I mean, you could can-flip in a battle Badger... ------------------

The hunt people down and blow their ship up or ransom it for space duckets kind of piracy, and small gang PVP say anywhere from 2-10 ships with 3-5 being the most common numbers for each side.

Which type of ship you looking for? Frigates, Cruisers, Battleships?
Or t2?
Atm, i'm liking my Punisher, and i'm kinda new to pirating.. but I think it's safe to say that there isn't one ship that is the best at pirating in Eve.
Just hop into a Rifter and go pewpew, learn as you go. =p

High sec, low sec, or 0.0? Lofty trick? Low sec gate camp? Scanning down mission runners? ------------------

Edited by: Handsome Joe on 12/02/2008 18:50:19 Scanning down mission runners, ratters, and the like with the occasional gate camping.
As for ships class, any really. Frigate, Cruiser, and Battleship. Though BS is a bit out of my reach ATM since I'm working on my support skills first, I can fly a BC decently well. I'm also willing to train for races I don't have (I have all racial frigates at L2).
And low sec. 0.0 has only gotten me a trip home in my pod so far or via vat if I'm unlucky. High sec suiciding seems lame to me.

Stick with frigates for a while, and work on getting T2 mods for them if you can't use them already (you need to be able to use T2 small mods before you can get T2 mediums and so on).
Personally I fly Rifters and Punishers for solo pvp/pirating and tackling in a group. If you fancy something a little bigger (and you've got the skills to fly it effectively) take a look at maybe getting a cruiser (Thorax is a favourite).
As for scanning mission runners, you can do it in a cheap exploration frig then switch to a pvp ship and warp in. You need pretty decent skills to effectively probe people out though. ---------

Obviously, they don't have the tank for the sentry guns. Although I could swear I saw someone using an Amarr Destroyer to gate camp and surviving doing it.

I'm new to piracy, although I have been mission running with my main for a while. Could any kind Yarr advise on which race's ships are best for piracy?
My gut feeling would be Minmatar, as their don't use Cap, but I could see the advantages of both Gallente drone orientated combat and the Caldari missiles in PvP.

Check out this guide if you haven't already. Scroll down until you find the bit about ship set ups and their pros/cons.
Don't be afraid to experiment with ships and set ups though. If you fly custom set up that people aren't used to, you can have a huge advantage over opponents who aren't sure how to counter you. ---------

well the way I learned, and the way alot of others will agree is to do a lot of playing around. Start small, get killed, get better, go bigger. hehe
Start with the Rifter. Nobody will argue it's the best starting frigate to get the ropes with. Try to get a feel for your fighting style before you make that jump to cruisers. At cruiser level go Stabber for more of speed and Rupture for more tank/damage.
At that point and many ships later you will figure out what you want to do and will be able to make a decision on what is next (and an idea of what skills to train up for) -sig-

I'm down... but you have to do it first
My current favorite ship is my Heavy Dictor... It's fun. But as far as "Best" PvP ship... I'd say every ship has it's good things and bad things. I like the Mega when in a slow moving gang, Hurricane, Stabber, Brutix are all fun ships if you ask me. Thorax is a fun ship to fly around with, and of course... the rifter

Edited by: Crowdad on 15/02/2008 05:03:31 This here's a tricky ship to fly... It works really well with some friends. Its fast and has good dps, it can speed tank battlecruisers and battleships. Takes down drones fast enough, vulnerable to missiles. But a pretty solid ship.
[Cyclone, PVP] 2x Nanofiber Internal Structure II 1x Overdrive Injector System II 1x Damage Control II
1x Warp Disruptor II 1x Medium Capacitor Booster II, Cap Booster 800 1x Invulnerability Field II 1x 10MN MicroWarpdrive II 1x Large Shield Booster II
5x Dual 180mm AutoCannon II, Barrage M 3x Heavy Assault Missile Launcher II, Hellfire Rage Assault Missile
4x Vespa II
28062 effective HP 5494 shield, 201/s, E/T/K/Ex=38/50/63/75 1887 cap, -59/s, +45/s, lasts 1m51s 1560 m/s 347 DPS, with decent skills.
edit: missing a launcher from fit.

Nano Vagabond/Sleipnir/Ishtar/Cerberus/etc, non-Pilgrim force recons, pure-gank blaster Deimos/Astarte/etc, any random ship with a cyno + carriers. Your goal is to hit the target, gank it in under 30 seconds, grab the loot, and be gone before backup arrives. Force recons are excellent support, and a good backup plan, bring a Falcon along and the hunter very quickly becomes the hunted.
Battleships are usually poor choices, as they're too slow, both in movement and in locking. HACs and command ships give you almost as much firepower, but are much more suited to the gank and get out role.
Quote: I know that Caldari are generally bad for PVP of the solo or small gang variety due to reliance on a shield tank, the exception being perhaps the T2 Frigates.
Whoever said Caldari are bad for small-gang PvP is insane. See the other thread on this page for a complete list, I'm not going to type it out again. But let's just say the Falcon is awesome in small gangs, and plenty of the other ships aren't far behind.
Quote: Also in another thread people mention that a Drake has pathetic DPS, what exactly is considered good or "acceptable" DPS for a PVP/Pirate ship?
Ideally, over 1000 dps as a decent minimum (from your entire gang). For solo, I wouldn't bother flying anything with less than 500 dps unless it has some really compelling advantages to make up for it. Your target's lifespan should be measured in seconds once you jump in, because that's all you have. The moment you show up, he's screaming for backup, even if he isn't bait in a trap. And if you find a target, every other pirate in the system is right behind you with the same plan of ganking it... and they won't have any regrets about ganking you as well.
By the way, you aren't looking for fair fights as a pirate. Damage output is your primary concern, with speed and ewar second. Tank should be almost irrelevant, you should be ganking the target before they even have a chance to shoot back. And don't feel bad about dropping a 5v1 on someone, that's how you should be operating.
