MMORPG.com just did a recent review
http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/gameId/14/setView/features/loadFeature/1756
Part 2
Overall a pretty decent review and i think eve has aged well.
Pros
Gorgeous graphics Open-ended, sandbox gameplay Massive single-server world Complex economy and combat
but ccp / eve is slowly becomming a by-word for bad server perfomance we all know lag isnt bad all of the time and only in ceratin hotspots but its enough to put people off i know if i read this review and read
"I visited Jita once when about 800 people were in system; my character locked up and I had to log on an alt to petition for a move" and "players will jump into the system then wait 10 to 30 minutes for it to load, only to find themselves staring at their wrecked ship" (quotes taken from review)
i have read this in more and more reviews most people find very few thinsg they dislike about eve, usually it revolves around poor performance or a steep learning curve.
Surely ccp's number 1 priority must be sorting out there server perfoamance before eve really does bcoming internet slag for bad perfomance (have already heard people using it in that context on other forums)
So when is ccp going to give us more news about improving the perfoamnce of eve, they have gone strangely quite since mentioning this fantastic new server. Eve is growing faster and faster but soon i fear it will choke on its own popularity.

Fairly balanced review, though I don't think its truly complete you can't experience the full scope of eve's goodness and badness in a short period. Another is the part on community is rather small, where in a game such as eve which is highly sandbox, its the community which makes the game what it is and frankly atm the community isn't in the best of shape.
Disagree with you on "Eve is growing faster and faster but soon i fear it will choke on its own popularity." though eve is growing, but its not faster and faster its a fairly flat steady increase with some dramatic pauses, plus you gotta include the alt factor which is bigger in eve than most other mmo's because of the skill training methods. ------------------------------------------ Sig removed as it lacks EVE-related content. You could say that about any MMO review, really. Hell, I've been playing this game since beta and I still haven't seen and done everything the game has to offer.

Solve the lag issues such as Jita by implementing rising tax costs for system where a lot of activity is happening. For example, calculate market taxes based on trading volume in the system, so Jita becomes unprofitable.
For mission hubs such as Motsu, implement diminishing mission rewards based on number of missions completed in the system. This way, missions will become another resource worth fighting for, even in higsec.
These two changes should disperse the crowds in highsec and send them into nearby systems. As for fleet battles, well, that wont be resolved any time soon.

True enough though I think for eve its even more so the case due to the sand box nature of the game you can have any combination of things together, most other mmo's have a very set structure where things are just variations on a theme allowing you to surmise how they'd be if you actually played them out, where as in eve your not going to hit some issues until you actually do things for yourself. ------------------------------------------ Sig removed as it lacks EVE-related content. Originally by: Nahia Senne As for fleet battles, well, that [lag] wont be resolved any time soon.
I don't think is necessarily true; Although it may be very difficult to simply fix fleet battles through the usual hardware upgrades and code optimisation I do not see why fleet battle lag cannot be fixed, or at least reduced somewhat, through changing game mechanics.
Lag aside the current fleet mechanics are very obviously not sustainable for two reasons: 1) The optimum fleet size is infinitely large. 2) The optimum dispersal of said fleet is infinitely small.
This combination means that as the game grows you will inevitably see more and more ships on the same grid in fleet fights and so lag gets worse (or at best does not improve).
The first point is fairly hard to address; greater numbers will (and perhaps should) always confer some sort of advantage but if these numbers are forced to spread out over several nodes then the issue is not so great. Point 2 however would seem much easier to address: line of fire shooting; sensor interference; damage stacking; bump damage etc are just some possibilities and while I grant you some of those may not be possible to implement for various reasons there are many possible methods of dealing with this issue, only one or two need be implemented to see an improvement.
Not only could these changes potentially reduce lag but they would, in all likeliness, make fleet fights more interesting; 'warp to person a at b km then everyone shoot c then d then e' isn't exactly a very exciting method of fleet fighting. For example sensor interference could be implemented so that the fleet would have to split up into meaningful sub groups (rather than the current system which is just a hassle you have to go through if you want decent gang bonuses) with separate warp in spots for each squad and different primary targets - ie a far less homogeneous system of fleet control. ----------- When I was a n00b, I spake as a n00b, I understood as a n00b, I thought as a n00b: but when I became pr0, I put away n00bish things. |

I think Eve is just about the best role playing game there is; hell most people role play without even realising it. Just because you aren't consciously putting on your robe and wizards hat and using funny words it doesn't mean you aren't role playing.
Look at the current GBC vs RSF war for example: most of the people fighting aren't doing it for resources, they aren't doing it for kill mails (honestly, that's the truth); they are doing it to support an in-game faction and its goals despite these factions having no real world relevance - that's role play if ever I saw it and its so immersive that you don't even realise you're doing it. ----------- When I was a n00b, I spake as a n00b, I understood as a n00b, I thought as a n00b: but when I became pr0, I put away n00bish things. |

Yeap. You got me. It's probably the non-funny-words part that makes it feel less like role-playing to me. Not that I want that everyone goes "Thou hast locketh mine shippe? Have at thee!". Although, on second thought, that would make me laugh big time.

You do realise that everytime you discuss ingame politics, use the market, discuss ship fittings, attack someone, etc, you are in fact roleplaying? Roleplaying does not mean typing sentences with thou in it; it means acting in character. So if you fight someone because he is not blue to you or even red to you, you are in fact roleplaying; you are acting in accordance with your characters ingame aligment. The moment you start discussing the weather outside whilst staring through your window overlooking your computer you are no longer roleplaying since you are bringing real life stuff into the game, or stuff going to happen to the game such as discussing upcoming Zulus (tm) but aside from that you are basicly always roleplaying in game.
Also performance/lag totally depends on which part of the game you are taking part in it would be a really poor figure if you are a pvp pilot but it would be a decent figure (such as a 7) if you are a missionrunner who sometimes goes to Jita or other tradehubs.
Fun, Sound, Value, Service, Graphics, Community are all very much unmeasurible terms since it totally depends on taste and (previous) experience.
I.e. if all you played before Eve was Elite on the c64 you'll rate the graphics a dead 10.
If you are used to getting the finger and rude words thrown in your face when you ask where the milk is located in your supermarket you'll rate CCP's service a 10, however if you are used to the employer you asked to take you down to the isle chatting up remebering your wifes and kids names you'll end up rating CCP's service a hell of a lot lower.
Sound is even more dodgy, you like the music or you don't, you like the game sounds a lot, some or not at all... Personal taste...
Community... If you are used to getting a full machinegun salvo shot at you as soon as you peek your head out of the window of your house, you'll feel right at home, however if you are used to your neighboors helping you out and vica versa then you'll rate the communite hell.
Value... one may value Eve it's hobby another one may value it as something to do whilst bored out of their guts... Very different resulting figures it will give.
Bottomline one mans broken mirror may be worth stacks of gold to another. - - -

All in all a very good summary of this game, some things are inaccurated but the majority is a good view from a fairly new players perspective, I'm sure.
Something for CCP to take note of tho, is when she describes the community: During my first 14 days of gameplay I was lucky enough to find a group of people committed to helping newbies. I had, in an ignorant sort of way, assumed this was the norm for the EVE communityàboy was I wrong.
This is something we often see on these forums too. "Man I was just scammed!", "Evil pirates make low-sec impossible to play", "suicide ganking cry cry". The devs have posted multiple times on these forums that EVE is a 'dark' environment, that it's bit of an anarchy. For experienced EVE players this is nothing new, but obviously this isn't clear for those that start this game, and might in fact give it poor reputation.
It seems to me that CCP might consider making it more clear to players that this game is what you make it to. It's not very 'friendly', but that doesn't make the community 'unfriendly'.

This review is pretty spot on. Yes even the community score is correct. Though I do agree 100% that the community of this game adds to its flare and personality, I also feel that it has gone down the crapper in the past few years and that there is a lot of unnecessary hate and griefing. Some of the clever tricks devised to circumvent the game rules for mass fun at the expense of many also underscores this.
Still, for every bad person there is one willing to help out. The real unfortunate part about these bad apples is that they ruin the trust factor between newbies and these good players. When a griefer strikes, EVERYONES image and trust factor suffers, not just the ones who did bad.
So yeah I think the community (or at least the image some people carve into it) is becoming a blemish. Can't see it getting any better as it is though. All the more reason to stay in 0.0

The classic graphics are clearly showing their age, though I don't dislike them. As for role-playing, considering 0.0 politics this game has the best roleplaying I've seen from anything anywhere. Regarding performance, I stay out of fleet battles and huge market hubs and I rarely have trouble. Despite the fact that the community can be a bit unfriendly at times they provide me with a neverending source of amusement. As for service, all of the petitions I've files were taken care of in a reasonable amount of time.
