Having watched one being used on a mining op go poof, I can tell you its two hours, plus or minus a minute.

Two hours. The 1-2 hour thing is an old wifes tale told to little noobs so they go to bed on time.

I agree with this. I've watched cans and wrecks that I haven't named pop at the two hour mark like clockwork after salvage missions just a little too late.

Factory guarantee for a can is 1 hour, after that it can pop any time.
However, 2 hours is not maximum. I've seen cans that have been 4 hours old and have not popped when I collected them. My suspicion is that the length of time a can survives after the first hour probably depends on server load: Quiet node = longer lasting cans.
But as stated, don't trust the cans beyond one hour.

Edited by: Hohne on 15/02/2008 14:24:43 Guaranteed for an hour. I have had them pop @ 61 minutes (and they were named). I have seen one last 14 hours and across a downtime. It just depends on when the cleanup is run, which will depend probably on how many cans are out there, how busy things are, randomness etc.
Basically. Count on replacing them before an hour is up, and you won't lose their contents.
FYI, naming them has 0 effect at all, the code doesn't care that it is named, it only cares how old it is when it runs the cleanup process.

It is definitely 2 hours not only confirmed by CCP in their "tip of the day" in the login screen, but I have tested. My can popped at exactly 2 hours. I had named it with the time i created it and exactly 2 hours later it popped.
They will never ever pop before 2 hours has expired. I constantly mine and never haul my cans before about 95 minutes has passed. Like I said I have tested and they don't pop before 2 hours, ignore anyone who says otherwise because they are just repeating what they have heard.
