Edited by: Huvec Aknar on 01/04/2004 17:06:53 Hey all,
Noob here, just reading up to see what's possible in my future - so far I'm only mining, rat-hunting and couriering, but occasionally my trips take me into .3 space ... haven't mined anywhere sub .6 yet, since I want to learn more about combat before I do any actual PvP.
Great thread, I'm just wondering what makes people scared of PvP, and I came up with a few ideas.
One is from the GTA Series, where it's FUN to get all sorts of enemies on you and try to escape or die - you don't mind dying. Why? Because the loss is negligible - some cash, all weapons currently on you, possibly your car; all of which is easy to recover.
The other one is the MMO PlanetSide, where the whole point is to fight, and you don't mind, although at times (say if you're in a vehicle) you'll try very hard to keep it alive and retreat if danger threatens. It's also easy to group - in fact, that's almost the whole point.
Ok, seems like EVE has the first part covered with insurance, right? You get back most of your cash and your complete clone, if you upgraded (and if you didn't it's your own damn fault). I guess you lose implants? I don't know what those are yet - is there a way to safe.guard those? Perhaps there should be so there's full coverage with a bit of expense upfront.
The second part ... grouping. It seems like every noob Corp has lots of people always on, chatting ... but not grouping - or at least not often. Why is that? My reasoning (based on limited experience) is that soloing is a bit too easy, or perhaps the rewards are too high even for things that are easy to do. People stay in high-sec because it's profitable and safe - contrariwise, that means that low-sec isn't profitable enough and is too dangerous; the repeated stories of "gate ganking" I keep reading about seem to confirm this - and the fact that you can't locate anyone otherwise seems to show that gate camping is the only way to ever engage in combat. Arg, a Catch 22, I guess.
Here's something that PlanetSide does that might be worth considering - combat hotspots. This would show up on radar as "Shots Fired" whenever PvP occurred, and would be seen by anyone within a certain radius.
Combine this with decreasing CONCORD's response in high-sec (say 0.3 - 0.8) - decreasing it a lot, in fact making piracy more rampant through more zones, not just low-sec that everyone's so frightened of. This way, any lawful citizen :D will respond to a fight breaking out nearby (due to the hotspot), but so may more pirates.
Frankly, I was amazed I was never challenged, targeted or anything in .6. In sub .9, I should start to feel nervous, but I haven't had ANY experiences with piracy yet. Perhaps the universe is too big, I dunno - but it seems like there's constant lawful traffic even around .6 and .5, and yet nobody ever pops in and takes a few potshots? Not a soul? Is concord response really that fast?
So yeah, anyway.
- Allow for insurance of EVERYTHING a player possesses. Make things un-retrievable and no one will ever want to risk losing them.
- Make it more possible to find combat if some is already going on. Hell, it might even make rescues possible :D
- Make mid-sec space MORE MID-SEC! Lowered concord response, fewer penalties on PvP (if there are any). I swear, I see perhaps one red blip on the radar, maybe two if I'm lucky. Where are you all intrepid PvP'ers?
- Make low-sec FAR more lucrative - right now I'm not even slightly tempted.
- Finally, maybe decrease the yields on high-sec mining? I don't want to slow down anyone's starting game, heavens forbid, but ... I have a Drone and a Rifter in only 5 days of casual playing (full time job etc). Seems pretty fast ... make people get into those mid-secs!
Oh yeah, everyone keeps talking about instajumps? Umm, what are those? If it means being able to warp instantly, with no power-up, that sounds bad too :D
Edit: these are some ideas, I obviously don't have that much background info to pick holes in'em, but I wanted to throw them out there. :) -------
