I recently started to play EVE, and was mildly speaking , astonished by the grapich, the scenery and the Vast number of oppertunitys , but then i got to the gameplay itself, the stearing of the ship is nothing like what i expected, i was expecting something like Freespace etc, not like "click *ship turns wierdly and flyes to cursor* " i was really like ... "Awwwwww"

its not jumpgate, its not freespace, its eve, manual steering is really only even barely noticable with serious nano pwnage hint use the overview to drive
also at one point eve ship descriptions contained crew count. some in the thousands
movement in eve is something you really only get the hang of after a while dont give up yet

Edited by: Sythyss on 15/02/2008 03:23:40 Jack...the automatic controls in eve atm are absolutely essential for how PvP in this game is setup. If it were full manual control...PvP would basically be impossible. The combat in this game is much more tactical than anything else. It's not trigger-happy like WoW or other similar twitch-style gameplay.

I agree manual flying(ie joystick) would be awesome. That said get in a good ceptor fight in a belt or even a frig and you'll start to understand it not all point a click. If you want to try manual fly go minny and try speed tanking. Getting in even a beginner Stabber is completely different from close and kill EvE.

Everyone always mentions the Stabber...I flew a Stabber, big whoop. Any frig makes it look like it is stitting still if they are fit for speed. Why the Stabber and not, for instance, the Slasher. Now THAT is FAST. +++++++++++++++ For the LAST time... Keep your UGLY Typhoon off my SEXY Hurricane! |

Yes, and it's also a frigate. It's kind of like comparing a stabber to a (current) nano-phoon. You're silly.

His first impressions are the lack of joystick control and it looks purty. He will give up in frustration soon enough so no need to prod him along. At least let the guy lose all his stuff in an untanked t1 indy to a suicide gank/gatecamp before we wave goodbye.

The lack of manual flight bothered me for a few hours after I started playing. Then I realized how frustrating this game would be if you had to manually steer all the time.

I was a bit astonished by the graphics, as it didn't live up to my WoW boob-enhanced NELF flipping type graphics, and cartoonish scenery.
Then I got to the gameplay itself, and...well, BOOYAH....I can't -> <- up arrow down arrow. It was nothing like I expected (please insert a GEICO commercial soundcheck with the PIPs here: RENTAL SHIP SMELLS LIKE SUNSHINE).

Im sorry, but this is partly whats keeping me in EVE, and me away from other games: The controls!
I hate Joysticks! I hate WASD! I hate gamepads! I hate anything twitchy
So please NO! Leave the gamecontrols as it is! It have worked for bloody 5 years now! And I dont see any reason whatsoever of changing it after all this time! CCP would if they did be a larger failure in my opinion the SOE and SWG if they did! A game I followed for 2.5 years, and then got wasted by SOE and their bloody NGE...
If you dont like the controls there are (too) many games that offer such (crappy) controls!
GAH!

Best advice is stay away from the forums and use the ingame help channel.
And never ever criticize anything in eve on the forums you'll just get flamed.
This is an MMOG and can't really play the way a real flight simulator, server is not responsive enough for that.
If you get into eve, you'll be happy about the way you fly and shoot.
If you want to use a joystick and feel like you're flying a tie-fighter, this is definitely not that game.
EvE = passive skills progression (SLOOOOOOOOOOOW), perform your chosen profession for isk, spend isk on ships, fly ships and kill and be killed in pvp, get more isk, and so on.

jack think of it this way, if this was awesome like freespace, no one would play freespace anymore. eve is t's own game, just remember your little frigate is the size of a huge jet airliner.
However I too think a better manual control would be nice.
also good nes for you they have already talked about putting in freespace controls for smaller ships liek fighters and tanks, jets and the like.
If I have to I'll find the interview I really don't feel like it though :P
but yeah your big ship shouldn't be going wosh becuase it's HUGE.
and has crew even if only a few due to your pod being like 100 men.

Edited by: PaddyPaddy Nihildarnik on 15/02/2008 08:12:00 I think one of the appealing things about eve is that to become proficient in "flying" against players you have to learn the skill/ins and outs from game experience. I havnt played a game where the skill can be transfered to eve from previous games ive played.
Like the op I was a bit bummed by the flight controls to start with and like all of you I learnt that its much better this way :). Give the guy a break, im sure in 6 mths you will see posts by him flaming the next noob to unluckly stumble into the GD forum.

You can't argue with what works.
Also - I am negative and fairly dismissive of these types of posts (yes, I know, I shouldn't be replying to them) because they are so ill-informed. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a hardcore fan of EVE or CCP - but people who have been playing for one or two weeks and think they have a good idea of the game are silly and I find it hard to suffer them.
Honestly, if it bothers you that much that you feel led to post about it's failures, you probably should have left already rather then attempt to grab some attention in the same way you mentioned in your post. Not you directly, of course. The OP.

Hehe - when I first found EvE in the games store years ago I thought "Wow! This looks like MMO ELITE!" so I bought a decent joystick with it and rushed home... only to find it didn't need a joystick
Grown to love the game's control system since then though. Stick with it - it's fun.

I played it on a spectrum 48K using the 'rubber' keyboard, but I figured that Eve looked so 'modern' that it would use a joystick - does that make more sense?

It's just not feasable to have a MMO game with manual control and the number of players EvE has.
The server lag problems would be 100 times worse if the game worked like that, you hardly notice a 1 second delay in response now, but imagine what it would be like if you had to dodge lasers around.
It would be awesome if there was some hardcore Elite-like MMO game around, with a nice realistics physics engine for some tactical combat based on player skill, but i think it would need to have small servers to work for technical reasons, a couple of thousand players on one at the most.

Bah, Elite played just fine with a joystick (C-64 and Amiga) and hitting single-pixel enemies at extreme ranges was no problem (that's how I won most of my fights).
Regarding EVE...
I was also a little put-off by the control model of EVE when I started but it grew on me. And it fits the idea of you being *in command* rather well. You give the order and the crew/robots/ship AI/whatever carry it out.

For those with a bent towards the style of play found in Wing Commander, FreeSpace, FreeLancer etc should wait for either of these two games to appear- X-Online and Elite-Online. X-Online is based on the highly successful 'X' series of games (which you can already play multi-player, go to the games website for details), whilst Elite-Online is of course based on Elite.

One thing to keep in mind, flying with a joystick really is for a game where you are flying a single seat craft, you are the pilot, gunner, everything. Eve is based on large ships that would be crewed by many people. Flying and shooting in a capitol ship really doesn't make sense with a joystick.
Eve's model is more like you are the Capitan of the ship giving orders to your crew. That's the way I see it anyway.

I too was disappointed in the lack of proper controls. However I quickly got used to it and have been playing for over 2 years now.
One thing to keep in mind, is that if we could steer the ships, the servers would be even more laggy than they already are since we'd have a ton more packets being sent back and forth.
You get the hang of the double clicking. I often fly fast ships which means having to use manual controls, and I do just fine.
