When I started playing EVE years ago, there was a small blue ôtactical overlayö in the bottom right corner of the screen. If I recall correctly, it was a 3 axis spherical depiction of all items on your ship sensors in relation to you (center). It was not terribly effective because it was small and unclear. It was ultimately discontinued due to its lack of appreciation. I was always disappointed by this. I wish they had improved it. I would like to be able to EXCHANGE my stupid ôGod Viewö of all the PRETTY, SHINEY, SPARKLY JUNK on my screen and instead, see nothing more than a tactical overlay with iconic representations of PERTINENT objects like other ships, gates, stations, asteroids, etc. I donÆt give a RATÆS *** what any of the ships look like, nor do I have any interest in the cute little flare of a missiles or turret blast. I am constantly annoyed by the flicker of stars and the glare of suns and nebulae. I am constantly embarrassed by the melodramatic streaks of turret fire and the ridiculous perspective-trembling missile explosions. I want to know where they are, what they are doing, and thatÆs about it. I am sick of searching for ways to reduce the needless graphics in a futile attempt to increase game performance. If I wanted to see pretty graphics, IÆd go play a different game. Even the best graphics options in EVE are not impressive compared to many other space simulation games. I donÆt play EVE for the graphics. Why should I have to deal with them?

In fact, a client version with icons only (no 3D graphics but squares and crosses in 3D space) would really rule and would be very useful. I think CCP is not implementing it because they're affraid that very soon, people would only remember Eve graphics from videos, screenshot and their first 30 minutes of playing (before they configure the client 'properly' by player written guides). And thats not really appealing to potential new players who watch the game over old players shoulders :) Yet, for the current players, no-graphics view looks much better then "all affects off and max zoom out" we currently use.

I'm the same way about graphics. Eye candy does not make a good game. EVE rocks because of everything not graphical about it. Certainly the UI isn't why I play. I never see my ship because I play zoomed out with my Tactical Overlay up and all effects off (all that I can turn off anyway).
I always thought MMOPGs would benefit greatly by a minimal graphics setting, I mean 1981 stick figure graphics like Battlezone. Also bare minimum data to and from the server where the server recognizes this setting and doesn't bother sending the information.
Wouldn't the servers performance improve during fleet battles if it had to send less information out and all of the players in that node operated completely free from video lag?
CCP did a great thing during their graphics engine upgrade allowing the 'old' graphics to remain in use. Like all other games I doubt they'll put effort into providing less to their customers, even if less is more in this case.
CCP keep working on the UI. Drone shortcuts. AI commands and window are awesome. I Needs much more.

I'd love to see this too. Not that I think there's a chance of it happening at all. But I'd love it nonetheless.

If you dont play EVE for the graphics, your are most likely missing the picture (get it? ).
Personally I dont think we need a "MUD client" for EVE. More work from CCP on the Solarsystem map should help commanders get a clearer picture of events. A properly configured overview can also help quite a bit.
With the various issues that can only be solved by deleting your settings folder, it is a pain in the ass to have to reconfigure overviews constantly, so some work is needed there as well.

Can not agree more. The idea of an upgraded solar map was discussed in this thread by me and others starting with the second post.
