I've been playing Eve for about 15 days now, and find myself in a predicament. How do I earn more money? Right now I fly a caracal, and have all the skills necessary for a drake, but not the 30 mil it costs. Is there any quick way for me to earn money, or should I just keep doing 100k mission?

get a destroyer (cormorant for caldari) and fit it up for salvaging, typically 4 salvagers and 4 tractor beams, +/- a couple either way depending on personal preference
you will need the salvaging skill (requires mechanic 3 and survey 3) for salvagers if you want to fit tractor beams as well you will need science 4 --- My Mod autograph collection. Mods, please sign here! --- Please transfer the agreed amount to my Swiss bank account - Mitnal |

Check for better quality agents. Higher quality means better rewards. Loot all the items from wrecks, salvage them, sell everything for the highest price you can get.
Join a corp, they help a lot.
Also don't even think of getting into a Drake for a while. You won't need in until you do higher level missions, and you'll need decent skills to fit mods to it properly. For level 1 missions a Kestrel with rockets and a web will do the job no problem. ---------

Not to be rude or anything, but I disagree with your last statement. With constant leveling up, I'll be able to fit a couple of T2 upgrades and the rest T1 within a week (especially since it's vacation). The problem is cash. My caracal can take anything short of well equipped battlecruisers, but there is virtually no opportunity for me to do so. What I need is a suitable application for my ship to make money. FYI, I had a merlin equipped with missiles within 3 hours of starting the game.

wp,
i dont think he was saying you arnt ready (you aren't though) fly the ship required for the mission any more and it is just needless overkill.
and why you aren't ready, it is because you dont have the funds to afford to loose a ship like that yet. make some liquid assets, a good rule of thumb is to have twice the ammount of what the ship you are flying costs fitted to fly that ship. -Minee Ze

Edited by: Dosgar on 17/02/2008 21:13:03 I was thinking of PvP anyway, most people jump into a bigger ship thinking it's better to do so ASAP.
You could try ratting in a 0.3 system, you'll find BC rats in the belts with a decent bounty, but obviously you'll have to watch out for other players wanting to pop you.
I managed to find a quiet 0.3 system where I was alone for hours and I made a decent bit of cash. Obviously I'm not going to tell you where it is though :)
*Edit* When buying a Drake don't forget to save a bit to cover the insurance. It will probably be around 10-11 mil for full coverage ---------

Just wondering, why twice the value of the ship? If say I had a drake that costs 30 mil, 10 mil of insurance, and 10 mil of equipped items, I would figure that you only need 20-30 mil to fall back on, not 50. Besides, that 30 extra mil would be much easier to make up with the drake itself in high sec systems that with my caracal. I think that the benefit is well worth the risk.
Secondly, if you have friends or a good corp, they can easily lend you the money to rebuild. If for some reason I lost my ship and didn't have enough for a new one, I would take out a loan and buy a new one so I could recover much more easily.
Just wondering why you would need so much to fall back on.

dont rely on friends, they may be just as broke as you =P
but in all seriousness reason i say this is, you forget to insure, damn, buy a new ship all fitted if you only have the cost of the ship to fall back on you now cant afford to fly that ship, but if you have twice that you can rat/mine/mission with that ship since you can still afford to lose it.
i hope that makes more since =) -Minee Ze

Mining is always an option. Yeah I know its boring, but its "easy" money considering what you could be doing.
I actually prefer to check the cost of minerals (not ores) at several systems, carry one of each and see what kind of price you get from station to station.
Find the ones that pay the best or most for X mineral.
Now since you are battling and fighting I assume with missions and NPCs in belts, collect the goods. Go from station to station and find which pays the most for what ever you have. once you figure out the market (you might need to write this all down) take one of that type object and put it in the reprocesser. Find out how much of what kind of minerals you get from it.
I have discovered in the area that I am in that reprocessed mineral from many lvl one loots brings in a tad bit more money than the object itself. No its not like millions of ISK, however ever isk counts and over time it does add up.
Find a corp to join - preferably one that has a corporate mining day. Join in on that - your basic frigate and two mining lazers will pull in a lot of mineral, if your corporation has players with freighters then you just dump a cargo container (can) in space and fill it up and they come by and pick it up once it is full. Your corporation (ifs its a good one) will most likely divide the ores amongst the players and for the corporation.
There is no "quick" way to earn 30 million ISK off the bat - The game is designed to take time to learn skills, to take time to make the money, it all requires a bit of sense of where you are going with your character working up to higher paying skills and abilities.
This is the object of the game. As mentioned there are other skills that you can train, such as salvaging - this will pay out more money on top of the rewards for each kill (bounties) and doing missions. Mission work is worth it.
Also some corporations have loan systems, some give players X type ship in exchange for doing corporation type work, like corporate mining days.

not quite, you can look for prices in the market anywhere in your region at any market in that region so just pop it open where you are find a place paying how much you want to sell for and got to that systema dn station to sell. -Minee Ze

See, you've gotta train some money-making skills, rather than rushing for the pew pew.
I'm making 1.5 mil / hr mining, soon to be 2 mil / hr. I know it's boring. You've got access to the Osprey with bonuses already, stop your rush for the Drake and train Mining to 4, Astrogeology to 4, and Badger Mark 2.
Alternately, train the social skills, especially Connections, to get access to higher level agents faster. Train the skills needed for tractor beams and Salvager modules, and salvage, it's where the money is for missionrunners nowadays.
Trade to 2 and Retail to 2 will let you set up 29 orders, good enough to be able to sell some of the named loot at decent prices. But if you want to take the trade skills a bit higher, so you can do more orders, you could try to play the markets in Jita (ugh).
The grind in this game is for the ISK, unfortunately. You can lose Drakes repeatedly in one day, and having to grind money to pay for losses is one way they keep the PvP "meaningful" in this game.

Level 2 missions can be completed in a cruiser, and they pay better than level 1s. When they say you're not ready to fly a drake, they mean that you're not ready to fly it well. It takes a lot of support skills in order to do that, especially to get a goodly shield tank going on it.
I had a drake within 3 weeks (working full time, so not all that much time to spend on it daily), and when I tried a few level 3 missions, I lost it. Could I fly the drake? Yes. Was I ready for it? No. After a few more weeks beefing up my shield tank skills, I started doing level 3's again, and, thus far, I've only had one that I had to warp out on.
My advice to you would be, don't rush it. Build up standings with your agent for a while, then go to a better agent and do the same, until you get to where you want to go. You'll get there, it just takes time. Heck, I'm only a couple months old, myself LOL

Run lvl 2 missions in caracal. Get a destroyer with tractor beams and salvagers to pick up loot (salvager is worth it to train it, lots of extra isk from salvaging wrecks) After that just run missions to and buy a drake, make sure you have skills to get a very good tank on drake before you fly it into lvl 3 missions though. Otherwise you'll be compelled to quit eve once you lose a drake you been working on for a few weeks on your first lvl 3 mission lol.
Lvl 3 missions pay significantly more than lvl 2's and are extreamly easy to do with a passive tanked drake (meaning you can start workign on those evil learning skills while making nice isk on lvl 3 missions) but you need to make sure you can get a good tank on it.

I have to say that salvaging can be a very profitable activity. I'm not very skilled at it, but I just slapped a salvaging gun on a free slot on my Vexor and use it to clean up after missions. It takes a long time, but there's some nice stuff I've picked up.

Learn about the markets. There are market hubs in each empire, usually where popular mission agents are found. You can get a lot more money selling your better loot through Sell Orders at busy markets than by selling it instantly to the highest bid. Check market details on any items with a funny name to see the current sell and buy orders. You have to be patient and wait for a buyer, but you can make much more.
Also train the Negotiation skill (under Social) to get better payouts from each mission.

To make money fast is easy, if you have good social engineering skills ;)
Take a look at the crime and punishment section of the forums for some ideas on how to execute some good scams.
Nothing is quite as satisfying as liberating stupid people from their undeserved ISK.

As people have said start salvaging ASAP. You'll earn more from the salvage than the mission. To start with just throw a salvager on your caracal or on another cheap ship. The destroyer with 4 salvagers and 4 tractors is a lot faster and more efficient but may still be a bit pricey for you.
Past that there's a ton of options.
What I did was train industrials and made 150M fairly quickly hauling stuff between regions. I took that cash and got into station trading and now I'm swimming in isk.

try running lvl 2 and lvl 3 although some lvl 3 may be a little difficult for you atm. As already said loot and salvage the wrecks from your missions. Train up some social skills to improve standings and use better quality agents.
When you first start eve, making big bux is hard. it will take you awhile to get the isk ball rolling but once you do making money wont be what slows you down.. training 20 days for 5% will :P |

Once you can do level 3 missions solo the ISK problem starts to disapear and once you can do that in a Battle Cruiser properly fitted with the right Mods/Rigs you can then find a partner who has the right ship/tank for level 4's and you will each make 10 to 15 million per mission after salvage and loot.
Your gonna need to save up for that Battle Cruiser and Rigs though, so plan on needing a good 100 million for it.
I used the market and bought things to take elsewhere and sell for a profit while killing as many missions as I could and salvaging my arse off.

I think if you were one of my recruits you would suffer a serious reduction in corp privileges for publishing this on the forums. Don't assume that your corp will pay to cover your losses. My corp probably would help a newer member who lost a ship and was hurting, but we do it because there's a culture of mutual reciprocity. I'd expect the newbie to help his corpmates in turn (e.g. acting as a scout or courier some time). Your attitude that the corp is a financial buffer for your personal benefit, is not promising.

I'm a total newb myself so this might be an idiot of a concept but...
What I'm doing is flying a destroyer equipped with enough fire power to kill mission rats and with 2 salvage modules so I can salvage as I go. I find it saves me lots of time over frig jumping back and forth to do the killage and then do the salvage before doing the mission turn in.
With my current setup, as newbert as I am, I would probably make the 30 mil you say you need in less than 3 play sessions of mission grinding. This is all done in .8 space and higher.
I've only made one low space run and that was a bolt to a station to pick up a mod. Low space is scary.

I did this for a time, myself, but I found that the missions went faster if I focused on killing, then turned in the mission, swapped to my salvaging destroyer, then went back out to salvage. In higher level missions, you really don't have time to spare to salvage as you go; you're too busy trying to kill so that your ship doesn't get eaten up by enemy fire.
For level 1 missions, that's fine, but for level 2 and beyond, I'd highly recommend a dedicated salvager *nodnod*

I'd like to expand a little on what people have said about salvaging. This is a MUST for mission runners. On many missions you will add a good 200-300K+ ISK.
The way I have found to be easiest is to do it this way;
Start the mission.
Kill all the rats. After, bookmark one of the wrecks. If you go through a gate to another area, bookmark a wreck in each area.
Complete mission and turn back in to Agent. Get reward.
Use your bookmarks to go back in your salvage ship. When you go back, the deadspace areas will be gone and you can use a MWD if you like. Also, all the space-junk from the missions will be gone.

Even better, do 3 or 4 missions, making bookmarks as you go, and then go back with the destroyer fitted for salvage and get them all at once.
Still better yet, find somebody doing L3 or L4 missions who is willing to let you tag along and scavenge his salvage and loot.
