OK - trial account, so no manual - but have reviewed many tutorials and online searches and haven't yet found answer to this -
Is it possible to set "custom" default Orbit or default "Keep at Distance" ranges that are not on the choice lists?
For example, what if I want a default Orbit of 13.5km? I have choices for 10km or 15km - can't find any spot in interface to type in a custom range. Same for keep at distance (other than first flying to the desired distance and selecting "current").
Also - haven't tested this yet - do orbits seek to "level out" to an orbital plane horizontal to that of the solar system? (It seems that your ship always roll-levels itself to a constant vertical where your "wingspan" is parallel to the system orbital plane, regardless of your pitch of climb or dive relative to the system orbital plane.) If I am 5km directly "above" a stationary target (i.e. our LOS is perpendicular to the system's orbital plane) and start a 5km orbit, will I eventually spiral down such that our LOS is parallel to th system's orbital plane?
Seems like good management of a combination of approachs, orbits, "keep distances," double clicks on open space to create free-maneuver turns, and throttle management will be critical to frigate/inteceptor/assault combat. Managing the range and transversal velocity against your opponent to favor your own ship seems to be the key to victory.

if you use the buttons in the "selected item" window (it starts off above your overview), then you can change the default values for those buttons, but im not sure about the right click menu --- My Mod autograph collection. If you're trying to change orbit distances in the right-click menu for an object you can't. You can change these distances for the buttons in the Selected Item part of the overview.
Right-click the orbit button and chose set default in the menu, you can type whatever value you want in the dialog that appears. From then on clicking the orbit button will orbit at that distance. The keep at distance button works in the same way.

Yeah, go out in space, and click on something so it's selected (for example, the station you just undocked from, click it in the overview), and then a bunch of buttons will appear in the detail pane.
Rightclick the Orbit button and Set Default At then type in the number. Rightclick the Keep At Distance button and choose Set Default At then type in the number.

THANKS guys! You know, I really thought I'd seen it somewhere when I was poking around at the interface early on day 1 - glad to know I wasn't hallucinating.
I'll test out the orbital angles question around a "gun-buoy" tonight and report back.

On a similar note, is it possible to bind functions such as orbiting to a specific key? It would be wonderful if I didn't have to keep throwing my cursor to the top-right corner of my screen (or right-click and select the appropriate options) to orbit.

I've only noticed the orbital plane changing when trying to orbit a moving target.

There is no manual - even for full acounts.
Luckily, the player-base have documented all kinds of materials (as you have found already), and the newbie section here is rather helpful. |
