Some help pls, as I love this game and have two trials to update to active accounts, just need the cards.

second: why have time cards if it takes a credit card to buy it? makes no sense and you must be wrong.

Many of the GTC resellers allow the use of paypal accounts. Paypal allows for more payment options than just the standard credit cards.
I have never heard of anyone finding a store stocking GTC's anywhere in the world. Perhaps Texas might be an exception, but I doubt it.

I suggest that you take that question to the store's mangement. If they have enough inquiries, I expect that they will start carrying a supply of GTC's. As most players simply buy their GTC's online, there does not appear to be enough demand for in-store purchases.

Isnt a GTC a replacement for a credit card? If i have to buy it online, why wouldnt i just buy a subsription to the game for a cheaper rate??
I guess I'm going back to WoW or SWG, its a shame too because i love this game.

Paypal, another on-line transaction service, no thank you. If i was willing to pay online I would just send money straight to ccp at a discounted rate.

The problem is not with CCP.
The problem is with the retail outlets.
They don't want to stock the cards, so they don't.
Take the problem up with them.

It's a little silly to expect an online service to provide meatspace payment venues. It would be pretty inefficient for them to do so really, and probably not particularly demanded, because it's more convenient for people to pay online. May make more sense for Blizzard, because they have a huge number of subscribers and already have product in stores.
You may just have to get over your thing with online transactions if you want to use online services. It's really not anyone else's problem that you don't even have a bank account.

Funny thing is, im getting flamed for wanting to play the game.
Not everyone has a bank account, so what, I trust my money at home in my safe more than in a bank. I pay cash for everything, including my mortage payment and all my utilities.
If a store will carry the matrix online game cards, you'd think they would be willing to carry eve online cards too, so I doubt that the retailers are to blame.

You're not getting flamed for wanting to play the game. I'm pointing out the inherent nature of online services. Stores may well be willing to carry them, if CCP hasn't organised it it may be due to low demand, as I suggested, or it simply not being worthwhile for them to do so. It would be cheaper/easier for them as an online service to use online payment methods. For Blizzard to do so would be easy, they're already shipping games to the stores, and they have economy of scale.
Fortunately you now may have a solution that works for you.

If you don't have a bank account/credit card/etc, how do you pay for your internet? I didn't realise any ISPs accepted manila envelopes stuffed with cash as a payment option - hell, I don't even know if the majority of ISPs even have a bricks-and-mortar presence that doesn't just consist of three blokes locked in a server farm somewhere...

Sorry I call bullsh*t. No way you got a mortgage without even having a bank account. And if you're *****ing about having only $35 to your name? More bullsh*t.
Seriously? If you're so online-phobic then why are you even trying to play an online game? Get with the 21st century dude. You have a problem using a credit card (which it sounds like you don't even have) then get a pre-paid VISA and use it.

I don't have an account with the bank that holds my mortgage, so no a bank account is not necessary to to get a mortgage only proof of income. Credit cards and the like do help with credit but there are other ways of building up credit with out using a card. Its difficult but not impossible.
He also not *****ing about only having $35, he's saying he's got $35 to spend on his subscription in his hand and no way to get it to CCP (though that's not entirely accurate). He also has conceded that he did nt think of pre-paid Visa cards. If you read or watch any of the financial gurus they will tell you credit cards, bank cards, auto-debit and the like are very bad for you. Sure in theory they're great, if you have a large financial cushion and always have the money when bills come due, and can pay the entire balance on your card every month, but in practice many people get themselves in trouble with credit cards, bank cards, and auto-debit that ends up costing them money.
I bet aside from large purchases like house & car this guy has no debit, that or he's evading income taxes...

Saying you "don't trust" credit cards, banks or the internet makes you sound like a hick.
Of course there is fraud, identity theft, etc but its the same thing as when some guy breaks into your car and steals your stereo.
You just have to be aware and take measures to prevent it, by shredding documents, by checking your credit report annually, by contesting charges that you didn't make and so forth. You are not liable for fraud, and all bank accounts are protected to $100,000 through FDIC.
Get a credit card, clean up your credit, apply for any govt aid if you need it, be honest and productive. Don't try to avoid the system, be part of it.
Good luck.

Resistance is futile? You shall be assimilated?
Seriously though, it is quite easy to have a mortgage with all the trimmings and never open a bank account. Money Orders from the store or Post Office work better than checks and can never run an overdraft. Not always the most convenient way to do things, but doable. _______________________________

If I do not like fee structures that take money away from me that could go to more useful expenditure categories, eliminating bank services and replacing them with more cost efficient means of handling my money is logical. That being said, there are debit cards available without a traditional bank account. AAA for example offers them as a sort of plastic traveler's check, and they can be loaded with up to 10K USA dollars. The cost is single 5 dollar fee, and the card can be reloaded three times before replacing it.
Using these cards is an excellent way of limiting your exposure to identity theft and the headaches that come with it.

This is probebly correct. Technically you could live without any sort of paper money or even paper checks right now. Direct debit. Granted paper money probebly won't be going away any time in the next decade, but it's already becoming obsolete/unessissary. You have to be careful not to get overdrawn, but it's quite a convenience.
Also employers can pay with checks, but it's possible to get the check turned strait to cash avoiding a bank account. You just need a liscence and the will to get taped by like 20 cameras.
Anyways dont' yell at CCP. It's a relatively unheard of 5+ year old game that started with like only 20,000 accounts. It would probebly never sell like a WoW or EQ, Matrix Online. Add in the fact that at least half of it's 200k subscribers live overseas "meaning less people in any given area". Finish that all up with the fact that since nobody even started playing EVE with store bought GTCs it's very likely nobody is going to switch over. Then there's the fact that the much older playerbase then most MMO means just about everyone has a Credit Card so that's even more reason to avoid GTC entirely.
Quite frankly it would be REALLY stupid for any retailer to bother ordering GTCs. As they would almost certainly not sell, and i'm sure there's many things i've missed entirely. You're getting flamed for yelling at CCP for something entirely out of their control because of your own narrow-mindedness. ___________

Damn the brain washing is working...and well.
You realize that banks are there to make money right? You may not be old enough to to know just how much banks have changed over the last 20 years. They charge more and higher fees and give much less in return. With the almost non-existent interest rates most banks are giving combined with the fees they charge most people are actually losing money by depositing their money in a bank. Then we get to credit cards, 20-25 years ago people didn't use credit cards that often even though they were available. You just didn't buy something you didn't have the money for (aside from large purchases like a house or car), now the banks & credit card companies have got most people carrying debit and making loads of cash off the interest they are charging. Who does this benefit? The banks, certainly not you, they found out that that having you constantly in debt to them through credit cards made them boat loads of money and as a society Americans have taken their own financial enslavement hook line and sinker. They've taken it so hard that they flame someone who doesn't conform to the debtor mentality, and that is truly scary.

Edited by: Jeanine LeCroix on 20/02/2008 15:31:00 Also, if you have ever had your bank account frozen by the IRS in error, and then spent several months trying to untangle it, then you may change your mind about how "safe" your bank account is. Nothing like having no access to your savings and then trying to get the bank to release your paychecks that are still being EFT deposited. And yes, the IRS has and still does make mistakes of this nature to innocent people.
Nonetheless, one can pay for the game by using Western Union to wire the money to a pay by cash service, but it will cost a pretty penny. The better option is to usea throw away debit card.

I hesitate to even get involved in this thread, but here goes.
Are there pitfalls, downsides and costs to involving yourself in the modern banking system? The answer is a resounding yes. However, a vast a majority may be avoided simply through the use of common sense.
A credit card can be used as a convenient tool or a mechanism for spending beyond your means. Exercising common sense and self control permits you to avoid the trap of the second. If you have doubts about your possession of either, keep your distance.
Banks are certainly profit-oriented institutions. They will pay you as little as they can get away with so that they may earn the largest possible spread between their deposit rate and the rate at which they loan those funds. The United States' economy approximately resembles capitalism, and as such it provides you with alternatives. Don't like Bank A's 1.25%? Check deposit rates on other banks. Or consider money market accounts or CDs. A little bit of research goes a long way. As for the various fees and charges? Find a bank that charges for services you don't use and has low or no fees for the services you do. Understand the various rules and you can avoid being penalized for things like overdrawing your account.
Finally, while your safe may make you feel safe, neglecting to invest that money is a losing proposition. Every year inflation will eat away at its purchasing power. Using the "Rule of 72," at a 3% rate of inflation, your purchasing power will be halved after a mere 24 years. Savings accounts may not match inflation, but they help. Alternatives such as money markets and CDs, as well as mutual funds, equities and fixed income securities (over the long term), may reasonably be expected to exceed the rate of inflation, giving you increased purchasing power over time.
Ultimately, it is a matter of personal preference. If the peace of mind provided by knowing that you have stacks of cash under your proverbial matress is worth the quite substantial cost of doing so, then by all means carry on. As with all things in life, make sure that the juice is worth the squeeze.

As I mentioned in theory these things are great, and one should do just as you mention. However in practice the reality is quite different. I've recently been doing just that research on the various banks and their fees, it costs a significant amount of time and effort to properly look into a bank and read all the fine print. Add to that that most banks seem to want to give you the run around about their fees by telling you they don't have any materials on hand or to check their website when the website directs you back to "your local branch". Its time and aggravation most people don't have the patience to deal with nor the time either. Not to mention all the money it costs in gas running around and collecting the information. The best rates ATM are the online banks.
So assuming the 3% inflation putting your money in a saving account will reduce the impact of inflation by roughly .5%, yep that what most saving accounts are offering about a half a percent or less. If for any reason you get charged a fee, drop below minimum or have one too many withdrawals it will take quite a while to actually get back into the black on that interest alone. Savings accounts traditionally were for a) building savings for the better investments and b) having a liquid emergency fund. Even the more lucrative investments bare give you any ROI anymore. 4% for long term investments that you cannot make solvent without heavy penalties is pathetic its only keeping you 1% above inflation, inflation that does not take into account the cost of petroleum BTW. Granted the more money you have to invest the better rates you can obtain but for the average 20 something they aren't going to have scads of money to invest. They also get heavily into credit card debt further reducing their ability to save.

But you'll put up with the time and aggravation and gas running around and paying all your bills in person with cash every month?

I have 35 dollars cash in hand...if thats not good enough for ccp, then i guess blizzard or sony can have it.
You can go to rite aid or walmart and they have ultimate game cards which CCP accepts as payments for game time. You can google it and find out for yourself. But the thing is its $5 more than the other payment types

I suggest that you take that question to the store's mangement. If they have enough inquiries, I expect that they will start carrying a supply of GTC's. As most players simply buy their GTC's online, there does not appear to be enough demand for in-store purchases.
I guess I'm going back to WoW or SWG, its a shame too because i love this game.
Then go play them and stop bothering us. |

Many of the GTC resellers allow the use of paypal accounts. Paypal allows for more payment options than just the standard credit cards.
Quoting this because you appear to have overlooked it, but herein lies your solution. Paypal.
Paypal, another on-line transaction service, no thank you. If i was willing to pay online I would just send money straight to ccp at a discounted rate.
/sigh
Right, so you want to play an ONLINE GAME but you dont want to pay online, or use paypal or a credit card or anything - you want to buy GTC at a shop.
So go ask the shop to stock them. --
