At the moment I'm training for mining barge IV, with 2d 11h 59m and 15s left. My learning skills that mean anything to spaceship command skills are as reads: Iron Will III, and Spatial Awareness III.
Once I reach Mining Barge IV, I'm going to be training for mining barge V; I'm planning on getting a hulk just a few days after that [and NOT a covetor]. I've estimated it will probably take about 32-35 days to train to Mining Barge V, but would it be worth it to train spatial awareness/iron will higher? Will the time training it be shorter than the reduced training time on Mining Barge V?

I have Cocoa, the mac version of it. Can't do any sort of hypothetical skill training on it.

Off-hand I'd guess that you'd benefit from training Spatial Awareness to 4 and then Clarity to 3. Iron Will I'm less certain about, but unless you're sure you're never going to train any other WILL skills, you might as well.
With respect to Perception, don't forget that you'll probably want some drone skills as well.
And even in a mining barge, you'll want *some* Navigation skills (I find them unbearably slow and clumsy with Nav 5, Evasive 5...)

To add to these posts: You shouldn't look at learning skills purely in the short term, obviously if learning skills got you to your short term goals quicker, it's an easy answer. But once you have your Hulk, you haven't finished learning. As a result, it's about finding out where the "break-even" date is for you.
Realistically, I would say getting basic learning skills to 4, and advanced to 3, should be a minimum for anyone that has their sights on EVE longer than 6 months. I would then say for your primary attributes for the short term skills, think of Basic to 5 and Advanced to 4.
It's about balance, and I just wanted to add, any learning you invest in now will pay off in the future. It's only when you talking about Basics all to 5, and Advanced all to 5, that the pay-off is ridiculously far down the line.

With my current skills (Spatial 5, Learning 5, Will 5, Focus 4, Clarity 5, + 4 implants in Perc and Will giving 26perc and 22will) my Mining Barge 5 is currently 15d 15hrs.
Less than half the training time. In your case, getting both of the tier 1's to 4, and getting the second tiers to 3 will DEFINETLY cut down your training time. Most of my pre-BS Spatial Command skills getting to lvl 5 is around 15d max.
As for learning training vs. barge training in terms of time efficiency, for just that skill, no. However, it will make Exhumer's faster, Mining Drone Operation faster, Mining Upgrades faster, a lot of other things faster as a result. (if you don't have them already)

I think everyone should get:
Learning level 5
Basic Learnings level 5
Advanced Learnings level 4
Level 5 on advanced is off the edge and only do this if you're planning to play for 3 years +

Yeah, get them. Basics to IV or V and Advanced to III or IV, before you start on Barge V. You will be amazed at the time it shaves off it. The effect is more pronounced if your current perception and willpower aren't that great.
I am of course assuming that you aren't going to stop training this character after he has a Hulk, though. However the IV/III plan may even save time on that skill alone.
As for me, I started with 6 perception and willpower. I got Barge V to 18 days between +4s and some very high learning skills.

If your end goal is hulk, yes. Get learning skills on Mem/ Int/ Will and Percep to Adv 4. Then get +3 implants if you can build enough LP to buy them cheap from an NPC corp. This will cut your training time on level 45 skills by 30% or more. A 30 day skill becomes a 20 day as an example. |
