CCP, Can Eve run on the iphone?... if not is it on the cards?
I don't think that i'm the only one that would buy an iphone just for this purpose. --------------------

It seems a little extreme to make any specific development effort on what is still a niche device. Still, a general mobile EVE effort was being worked on at one point, limited to certain aspects of the game such as skill changing and such. Not full gameplay, though.
Not sure whatever happened with that, every so often they say it's still being worked on, but... *shrug*

instead buy a mini computer, they are handheld computers that gofor like 1500$ but they will play eve and then some and aren't much bigger than an i-phone.
However I'm sure someone out there could mod the phone to play eve.

form what I understand it's more or less done jsut it only works on windows mobile. which is pretty lame because I have windows mobile :P and wouldn't mind getting that prototype.but I'm sure it's bug ridden to hell come to think of it.

The only applications that can be developed for the iphone, are ones that plug into the safari broswer. This is what apple is allowing third parties to do. If ccp were to do this (as a broswer plug in) then you wouldnt need a iphone at all.
CCP were making EVE lite, developed by a group of students from the nearby university. They graduated and went on to other things unfortunatly. It was going to be playable on windows mobile 5 or greater devices and would be a much better idea than a iphone only application as there are far more windows mobile pda's.
Also considering you can make proper exe's (in the mobile format) and fully fedged programs for wm its much better

REMOTE DESKTOP
I've "played" (Chat/Change a skill) EVE on my BlackBerry. If there is a remote desktop app for the iPhone (Which there is, RMD+)
Then there you go, EVE on your iPhone.

Well, the new iPhone Developer pack should be out now or very soon. This will allow programs to be written for the iPhone / iPod touch that dont need the browser.
Personally i would love a version for the iPod Touch as it means I can sit in work and play when I am bored.... ----

The iPhone would need like 100x its current power. It is a weak crap phone. You would have better luck with an n95 or something. But still massively away from the goal just in computational power.

If you want mobile: I get 10 fps running eve from a usb 2 HDD hooked up to my eee pc 701 fitted with 2gb memory.
The 800 x 600 res, (using XP and Bassam's screen stretch util on lazertags hacked drivers) is a bit annoying though.

Australia's high speed network is 3G and the iphone has been adapted to 3G for the very purpose of being operable here. The iphone also runs a lite version of OS X so im sure the Mac client could probably run on the phone. Whether or not it has enough processing power to be able to run it well is another question.

The iphone operates on flash memory, so I doubt it could run anything beyond an internet browser or mp3 player. Eve would difficult to put on it given the processing/graphics requirements. If you brought Eve down to the level of a text adventure, however...
But for the record, iphones do rock. Oh yeah. I <3 my iphone.

Perhaps something more basic would suffice for now... Contemplate a simple app that uses the API key to look up your skills, and then add some time tracking and the ability to add a calendar notification when the skill is up
Or just port EVE MON to the iPhone... It would be nice if the EVE MON crew made even a simplified version for the Apps store

How many threads need to be started about this???? Yes, iPhone is a nice little phone, but you don't see threads with requests for Eve migration to any other pocket PC, right? You know why? Those people realise it is semi-impossible for a pocket PC to run Eve. Making a new application just for chatting or skillchanging would take valuable resources away from projects that really matter. The Eve Magic Widget works on any phone that is internets browser capable...I know you can watch your skills, pos fuel, transactions and stuff but as for an alarm when your skills finish....it may be possible.Or just set your phones calender alarm to go off if you can be bothered setting it every skill. |

According to John Carmack the iPhone is as powerful as a playstation 2. The processing power is there but it sure isn't worth the manhours you would need to invest to port it for that device. ___

My work decided to switch from Crackberries to the new iPhone 3G's. I can honestly say it was a horrible choice. From a business perspective these things simply suck. Here is the short list so far:
-Their battery life, especially if you are out in the field, is horrible. I have to charge it daily.
-The Exchange integration is abysmal.
-The bluetooth is gimped so it only works with bluetooth mono audio headsets, wont pair with anything else.
-It is not compatible with the vast majority of iPod and iPhone accessories, especially the car kits. Case in point a co-worker has a Bose sound dock for his iPod Classic and the iPhone 3G doesn't work in it, but an older iPhone G2 will.
-iTunes is a horrible enterprise program. Lets give all of our employees access to free apps, music, videos, podcast, etc so they have something else to do other then work! (like trolling around on the Eve-O forums for example)
-The processing power may equal the PS2 but the PS2 was purpose built as a gaming console and also had the GPU's to back it up. The reality is that the iPhone's playback and graphical interfaces are choppy and sluggish at best.
-The touch screen is nice once you get used to it, but it does not react well to lots of multi touch contacts the faster you get at using it.
-The iPhone is purposely lacking a lot of standard media formats so you must do it the Apple way.
-The fact that app developers have to do things the Apple way and get permission for legit programs on the App Store, compared to any Windows Mobile device that can install and run most windows compatible programs.
etc etc etc!

Even now I am writing this to you on iPhone and happy to find out that the eve boards run supruzingly fast on an iPhone. Personaly I as an eve player and iPhone user would like to see is two things.
- The ability to train skills from my phone. - The ability to read and issue eve mail.
There are many other aditional features I would like to see but I realize they may be a "stretch"
- ability to check a local markets - access to your wallet and ability transfer funds. - ability to refit local ships (note the skill to refit ships remotely would rock) - ability to access and issue contracts. - lastly a full galactic map with system info.
The trouble with remote access is that you can't actualy have the player loges in since it's missleading, geven the fact that it's not a fully functional payer. So at best remote users would have to be "ghosts" or well marked in the interfaces as mobile players. Being congruent to the idea that they are more like background elements (like npc's) so no need to show them in local.
To me being a remote player is like being on the sid lines seting up game plans and geting suited up. If an op was set for say 2:00 eve time I'd like to be able to fit a ship get some ammo and the like.

Not only would there be lots of time put into it as you stated, but do any of you people that want eve on your phone realize how fast it would eat your battery power? You would have to stay plugged into a computer/wall/car the whole time, which kind of negates the point.
Unless you just want to change skills, then CCP may be able to make a micro port of the game to allow you to see stuff like that. ____________________

Edited by: Elii Witherworth on 06/01/2009 08:45:07 Im not technically reviving this post... cuz its less than a month old... but I wanted to share what I've found useful for me.
I use VNC Lite (do a search on the app store). I will soon be upgrading to the paid version $6 or so, but the Lite works almost as good. Using the VNC Lite, you can remotely connect to your desktop at home, and start up EVE. Its easy to log in, etc... but then the problem comes with right clicking. There is no mouse interface for VNC Lite (other than a screen tap is a left mouse click), but there is a keyboard, so you cn still type up mails, chat with your corp, etc...
Essentially, you can do everything in EVE that doesn't require the right mouse button. For those of you who have already guessed it, switching skill training DOES require a right mouse click (Im talking windows here... not sure how you'd VNC with other OS). The upgraded version has a right mouse click feature, which'll allow skill switching.
I am not promoting or suggesting you purchase VNC full edition. Just check out the Lite version and see if its something you can use... I can... I'll just make sure to set long skills when Im away. VNC Lite supposedly connects over the 3G or WiFi, but I've only tested it with WiFi, and it works for me.
P.S. For all you tech savvies out there lookin for a "hack" for the VNC Lite to allow you to right click, I have one for you, but its not as simple as a few clicks. What you can do is use a scripting language (choose any one you want) that will allow you easy access to mouse functions (specially right clicking). What you can then do is tell the script to wait 5-10 seconds, then perform a right click. You can then run the script via VNC Lite and move the mouse to the area you need to right click, and wait. When the script executes, a right click will have been performed. Note: for some scripting languages, something as simple as "rightclick()" will work, whereas other languages, you may need to do some "fetchmousecoords()" and send that info to "rightclick()". Use a language you are familar with, or get familiar with one! =D
