As per title. I've got myself into a shiny new Caracal, had a ***** at a few L2 missions, and I think I'm comfortable with them. But I'm a bit lost as to where I should be going next - it looks like Battleships are the next step up, so should I start skilling toards them next, or is one of the offshoots like assualt frigates or battlecruisers preferable?
It's all very confusing with all the "main" types of ships and the number of "similar but different" classes that they all have... some sort of guide as to what all the different classes are and what their main roles are intended to be would be helpful.

It really depends on what you want to do. For example, you can totally skip interceptors and assault frigs if all you plan to do is missions and PvE.
For level 2, a cruiser works fine. Level 3 requires a battlecruiser or assault frig. Level 4 is best to do with a battleship, although HACs and command ships also works.
If you want to get to level 4 as fast as possible, I would suggest going for battleships as fast as possible. Even if its a little overkill, you can use a raven for level 3. And when you have enough standings for level 4, you should have enough skills in caldari BS, cruise missiles, shield tanking etc to do them.

I highly recommend that you take at least a little trip down the Battlecruiser line. It makes level 3 missions a breeze, and many of the skills you train up (support skills like shield, weapons, drones, etc) will be useful on the Battleship.
Personally, I have a wonderful time "speedrunning" level 3 missions in my Drake. Not a worry in the world with its awesome passive tank, and its 7 high slots for the heavy launchers chew through frigs and cruisers. So, I definately recommend the Battlecruiser line after cruisers, just to make your time go so much smoother and faster.

I'd also encourage you to check out battlecruisers, you get some vast cpu, powergrid and cap improvements, and many more slots to try out module combos. They're a bit of a step up in price as well but definately pay their way with lvl 2 and 3 missions.

While the advice to train battlecruisers is good, I think it depends on your plans. But if you plan to focus on high sec level 4 missions, then I recommend not investing a lot in battlecruisers. Frankly, it doesn't take much of a tank for a battleship to run level 3 missions better than a battlecruiser. In that case, my advice would be train a couple levels of battlecruiser, so you can fly it later if you change your mind. Then save up for a raven and use it to run a lot of level 3 missions until you train your tanking, missile, and drone skills to the point where you can run level 4 missions well.

If you are only after missions, try what you can handle in your Caracal. Most level 3s are doable with a good approach :-) Know the mission and know your enemies.
You can go battlecruisers first. Simply because they are using cruiser gear, so your only skill needed will be the battlecruiser skill (level 4 is plenty for good BC performance).
Later you can switch to battleships. They need a new skillset in large weapons, so it takes some time to train for their full potential.
However the Drake is also usable for level 4 missions.

I strongly support the "battlecruiser for level 3s" recommendations in this thread.
Battleships are a "BAD" idea for level 3s. They give a false sense of security, due to their excess HP. Their weapons (with the exception of the Dominix) are ill suited for level 3s and you typically need to fit medium instead of large weapons (and you wont have the skills to use large weapons properly anyway) which wastes the bonuses on the ships. Plus, battleships are very slow moving vessels.
A battlecruiser is far more nimble, uses weapons geared towards fighting the sizes of NPC shipsyou see in level 3 missions and is generally much less skill intensive than a Battleship.
As a rule of thumb, you're not really ready to progress to doing level 4s until you can fit out a Battlecruiser for level 3s in an optimal manner i.e. fully sustainable tank but with very solid DPS.
There are exceptions to this. A Dominix, with its drone spam, is quite forgiving to fit in terms of a solid tank while still maintaining good DPS (assuming you have the drone skills), while the Raven is the mission running ship of choice for the masses with good reason, it requires almost no thought to fly.

Upon reflection, I'll withdraw my advice. It'd only applies to mission specialists using the domi or raven, and there's plenty of other caveats. For example, buying and insuring a raven will probably cost 115-120 mil plus some sort of using fitting (domi is much less, 75-80 mil), maybe another 10-30 mil in fittings. That's a lot of isk for a new player. And chances of popping that ship are too high even with the level 3's since you aren't familiar with the ship or missions. My experience has been with the domi, which is considerably better at level 3's than the myrm. When I got enough together to buy a domi, I did so. But I have lost domis in level 3 missions. Losing ravens under similar circumstances is bound to be a lot more expensive.
Tech 2 ships can be nice in missions, but no way should a new player be training for them unless they're going to train for those ships anyway. A HAC or command ship has long training times; they're extremely expensive; and most of the cost isn't covered by insurance.

Agreed. No way would I encourage someone new to missions to train for HACs or Assault ships. Completely different way of learning to do missions for a start. To do level 4s efficiently in a HAC or a Command Ship requires lots of skills and in some cases, a rather oblique way of fitting a ship.

Edited by: Infernea on 25/02/2008 14:06:41 I'm a new player but feel quite comfortable with EVE atm, due to alot of help from mates and articles about different stuff regarding EVE.
I have both Myrmidon and Drake and do mostly L3 missions. I have to disagree with some here. Myrmidon is a very effetcive ship especially if you can use TECH 2 drones. I equipped my Myrm for passive shield tanking and did all missions including Angel Extravaganza and The Blockade only using T1 gear and T1 drones.
Drake is a bit better to do missions with since it's more suited for passive tanking. Also Drake seems to do more damage than Myrmidon.
If you don't have alot of ISK, you should go battlecruiser, no doubt.

This really depends greatly on your fitting and skills. I think you'd be surprised by how much more damage the Myrm can spew out over the Drake if you fit it right.
Ofc this requires a little bit more interaction from the player, but mission ships that don't require much effort tend to be a bit sub-optimal in performance compared to something a little more frantic.

If the goal is level 4 missions, I would still use raven instead of battlecruisers to save a week or so in training. You will also be able to train explusively for raven and large guns like cruise missiles while doing level 3.
For level 3, a raven can be fitted something like High: 6 * cruise, 2 small guns like 125 rails (for frigs orbiting you) Med: xlarge sb, 2*rat specific hardeners, 2*target painter, sensor booster Low: 2-3BCU, 2-3PDU Rigs: only CCC
This raven will perform pretty close to drake and other battlecruisers in level 3 missions. On missions that require a lot of travel, exchange the sensor booster for an afterburner.
