Also, make sure that you invoke the JRE with -server commandline switch.
While since 1.5 the JVM does attempt to best guess which environment you are interested in, for starting and using any heavy app -server is mandatory.

Basically the litmus test I use to decide to use a scripting language, or a programming language is 1stly size and complexity, and secondly if it needs to be maintained and remain extensible.
If the app is just "throwaway" and small/simple then you should use the scripting language if you're proficient at it.

What? You mean there is another way besides renaming your JRE install folder to what it guesses for to make it the one you want?

But running a JRE is really easy, only things you need set are JAVA_HOME and CLASSPATH environment variables. If you are running an application packaged into a jar file, you do not need a classpath env var.
Also, most enterprise apps are simply "deployed" onto an application server. You get a single ear/war file, go to the server's management console, upload it, configure data sources needed, deploy it, done.
