Is there any information anywhere which will tell me which type of asteroid contains a particular type of mineral?

Have a look here for mineral content of the different roids.
Here is a calaculator to let you know how much you will get based on your skills/standings when refining.
Here you will find a chart showing you where to look for each type of roid.

Well to answer the actual question, when u go to an asteroid belt there are two things that a miner wants to know--the make-up of the asteroids and how much ore is present in the asteroid... U can use ur overview settings and check the type of ore u are looking for like Veldstar etc or u can right click on an asteroid and it will tell u.... U can use a scanner mod to see how much of the ore is present--advanced miners don't like wasting a full cycle on asteroids that have less than a cycle left.....I wouldn't worry about the scanning thing until u r using modulated strip miner II's etc...

Edited by: Letouk Mernel on 25/02/2008 15:44:42 If you're going to mine, installing a Survey Scanner I module is very much recommended. With it, you can go to a belt and get a list of all the roids in your vicinity and how much ore they have. Very useful.

Yeah the scanner is useful BUT we don't know his lvl of skill and if he's not flying an Ore ship then he likely needs the slot the scanner would take up for something to help keep him alive if he's mining neway other than .9 sec space.. So for a beginner the scanner is a luxury. I have yet to use one as I find better uses for the slot..

Try this. It's basically the miner's bible.
A scanner isn't really needed until you get to Strips but is still handy with regular mining lasers to find which asteroids have the most ore. Some are left with very little ore by miners who either had to bug out or log off.

Actually if you are doing mining missions you will need the scanner early on, one of the missions requires that you scan a wrecked station for a particular ore.
The I button or selecting Info will tell you something about the rock you are interested in, they are pretty good at telling you what is found in X rock, not how much, but what miners get in the way of minerals.
That info button will also tell you how much ore you need to refine into mineral per type of rock you are mining.
Veldspar gives ONLY Tritanium however its weight and volume make it an excellent choice for new players to concentrate on simply because it gives a lot of refined mineral per load of ore.
I would strongly suggest you make your own overviews.
One of them should be Mining - granted there is a default mining overview, however it also comes with other "stuff" that pops up. Your personal overview for mining should contain ONLY asteroid types, as you "discover" new asteroids update and 'save as' your Mining overview with the new ore. Once you warp into a belt and insured that it is secure of enemies, switch to your mining overview, select the rock(s) you want to work on, target it(them) and then switch back to the Ships/Vessels overview. This way should an NPC or an enemy be warping in you will clearly see it and either prepare to fight or run.
You should also have a Ships or Vessels overview which is nothing but Ships. When warping into a belt have your ship overview on - this was you can immediately see if there are NPC pirates or an enemy or something.
And you should have an overview dedicated to stargates - that one should include ships (player ships and NPC enemy ships) this way when you travel through lower secs you can quickly warp to stargates and jump as soon as your warp bubble collapses. Select the gate in overview and use the Selected Item buttons to warp to and jump - far faster than right clicking space and scrolling and clicking.

Yep, Halada's complete miner's guide is the best document about mining. ----------- MOP recruiting Industrialists/miners/traders/missioners/etc |

Start in your race's mining frigate: Amarr Tormentor, Caldari Bantam, Gallente Navitas, or Minmatar Burst.
Fit two mining lasers, a survey scanner, some kind of tank (shield or armor), and pack a drone (Hobgoblin I) for self-defense. If you are Minmatar, tough luck, no drone bay on the Burst.
Pay no attention to the mineral content of the asteroids. Instead, check the market value of the ores per cubic meter, not per unit. Mine the one that is most valuable, which will vary based on your region. If you need other minerals for your manufacturing goals, sell the one ore and buy the other. You should make a profit in doing so.
