I'm a pretty hardcore miner, I'm up to 1675 M^3 mining volume per strip miner on my Hulk now. I agree with the others on this forum that have suggested that mining needs more depth. I've been running missions some and occasionally I see these half-built or decaying metal structures. I wonder why I'm looking for metal in rocks when there's all this free metal right there in that old abandoned structure. In some cases there are also structures that I've been ordered to destroy. I figure, why blow something up when you can melt it down and sell the scrap?
So, I suggest a 3rd tier of ORE mining barges called "Dismantlers". These barges would be capable of mining asteroids though not as efficiently as the Exhumers. Their specialty would be their ability to fit "Wrecking Beams" on the high slots. Then, add some special category of structures called "Abandoned Structure" throughout the deadspace mission or exploration complexes. These structures can be targeted by wrecking beams and will return a wide variety of scrap metal parts (not just the current 'scrap metal' commodity).
There would be a couple ways of further differentiating this from mining. I'm thinking this would be a much more volume-intensive mining operation. Let's say a typical wrecking beam will yeild 5 times the volume of its equivalent strip miner. Dismantlers would have like 25% more cargo space. This would mean you would need a well built, skilled industrial hauler in order to complete such an operation. Dismantlers would be able to be further improved through the use of medium slot 'Structure Analysis Sensors' in the medium slots which would decrease cycle time.
The scrap metal parts would work like ore in that you melt them down at a refinery for base minerals. If you wanted to get real fancy, you could make some sort of 'POS Rig' type of modules that would use salvaged parts from structure to improve your POS, but that's getting a little more speculative. Structures in lower security space would, of course, yield more advanced minerals.

Some Specifics
Here's kind of what I'm thinking for the highest level Dismantler and related modules.
Wrecker 3 High Slots 5 Medium Slots 3 Low Slots CPU 475 PG 400 No launcher or turret hardpoints shield capacity 3000 Shield Em Damage Resistance 42 Shield Explosive Damage Resistance 75 Shield Kinetic Damage Resistance 65 Shield Thermal Damage Resistance 60 Armor Hitpointsarmor hitpoints 1500 Max Velocity 120 Drone Capacity/Bandwidth 125 capacity 12,000 m3 7% decreased cycle duration on Wrecking Beam modules per Dismantlers level.
Skills Exhumer V Spaceship Command 5 Advanced Spaceship Command 1 Dismantlers IV Mining V Astrogeology V Electronics V
Wrecking Beam I Only works on abandoned structures. Mining Amount: 1800 M^3 Cycle Duration: 180 Seconds CPU: 90 Power: 75 Requires Mining V, Dismantling I
Wrecking Beam II Mining Amount: 2000 M^3 Cycle Duration: 180 Seconds CPU: 100
Structure Analysis Sensor Medium Slot CPU: 30 Power: 10 5% Decrease in cycle duration for wrecking beams.

Thanks.
A couple other ideas: You could make it a bit of a team sport by setting it up in such a way that the dismantlers tear off bits of "debris" from the structure with their specialized tools. Then, the debris itself could be mined by normal mining lasers.
It could be made dangerous by having low-secure structures have hives of drones in them that spawn attack-drones frequently.

Hmm... might be an extension to salvaging. Sounds good so far. <sig>{string not found}</sig> Boost tractors? |

I am a hard core miner as well and would enjoy an interesting break from the usual. This idea has some real merit and would add alot to the game for miners.
I would also add that while tearing into an abandoned station add some serendipity items such as the usual salvaged goods found in wrecks. If the wrecks have salvaged goods then the stations should have them in spades.
Two thumbs up from me on this one.

I like this idea. I've often wondered why I can't mine certain objects in space. Those big crystal based asteroids are an example.
I'm not sure if you're able to change the thread title but if you are I'd suggest changing it. "Yet Another Mining Idea" made me think it was just another mining n00b whinging about yields or weak ships.

Thanks for the support. You could definitely do some interesting overlap between this and salvaging. I'd think you would get more 'construction' type materials such as alloyed tritanium bars then the ciruitry type of stuff.
Also, this should not be one of those low-security only things. Give everyone a piece of the pie.
This could make for some interesting LVL 4 missions from agents in mining departments.
