I can understand why the servers may need to be rebooted every day. I may not like it, but i can understand it.
But how come it takes an hour? My guess is that you just have to reboot the machines and load up your software. Or is there more to it? I'm assuming it doesnt take an hour just to reboot the machines and load them up with the server software, unless there some sort of extensive software routines running when the server comes back up.

Well, i'm not sure.... but here are my thoughts.
EVE is changing all the time, and where bugs minor bugs appear in the world changes need to be made. So when the servers go oflline, the CCP crew can do what they have to do.
Offcourse with a global network there are quite a few nodes that need to be insync with eachother, so that would take quite some time i suppose.
Reading my own post... actually, i don't have a clue why it takes up to one hour

The devs and gms visit their ***** dealers and the rodents on the little wheels in the servers are fed.

I guess some intergrity check on the universe is done. After this a backup of the database is done. Server side patches are applied and a "smoke test" is done on the servers before starting up again. I think this could easily take one hour.

don't forget thats when they backup also.. and the clusters they run on have to synq every reboot. one of the benifits of running on windows i guess :)

Last but not least I'm sure the program runs some sort of self diagnostic and cleaning program maybe before or after reboot.
EQ had a similar thing I am pretty sure. all quests reset once a week, ETC ETC ETC.

they only do backups once a day? i would have expected there to be backups every few hours at least. Or are you just guessing? I'd really like to hear from someone who actually works there as to what goes on during the downtime. anyone?
