Edited by: Antaris Xenal on 27/02/2008 22:31:07 Edited by: Antaris Xenal on 27/02/2008 22:30:51 This is my situation. I have crazy parents who won't let me buy my own computer. I have offered to pay for it full myself but they still won't let me. I want to play some decent new games, IE: Supreme Commander, Sins of a Solar Empire etc. But I have a piece of crap onboard intel 128mb card. My dad offered to pay for a new gpu so I could actually play other games. Even eve sucks as it is. I am looking at this. Card
For this computer.
Computer
Any help would be appreciated. I tried to include the best info about the computer I could find. If there is anything else I could provide to help, please tell. Thank you in advance
Edit: Forgot to say that my budget is around 50$ USD and that is what my dad is willing to pay. Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes -TheDagda ([email protected]) |

Defiantly a decent card and the computer supports it, however you MAY end up needing a new power supply just to be safe but who knows it might run it without a hitch

Yeah, I don't want a card if I have to start paying to upgrade other things. At that point you might as well get a new computer -_- I want to spend 2500$ usd on a very nice gaming rig but as i said, parents hinder that goal :( Thank you for the reply :) by the way I have the 1.8ghz dual core processor version of the vostro 200 Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes -TheDagda ([email protected]) |

8400GS is NOT a decent card. It's a Trap for people unfamilier with Nvidia's numbering system Reminds me of when I got burnt by buying an FX5200 thinking it might actually be good
At very minimum I'd say, get This or This
Bit more expensive, but worth the money considering they'll actually be able to do stuff

Yikes,
I would stage a head injury and ensure copius amounts of damage to your computer and then your parents can collect insurance money to get you something decent.
Did you reiterate to your dad how ******** his decision is? Lemme think...my kid is going to by his own rig...or I shell out for a graphics card? Does he realize yet that he got bent over at the local Best Buy yet? _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. Horrible idea. I have 5 brothers, everyone of them which will tell my parents about it. Bribing is not an option.
And to the person saying that my dad is being ********. I know he is, he doesn't care. He is crazy lol. Thanks for the tips on cards, any other ones that are worthwhile? Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes -TheDagda ([email protected]) |

The link you provided is worthless, its the configuration page, not the specs page. Please post your DXDIAG information, and what, if any, GPU port your dell mobo has (pci, AGP, PCIe). Alternatively, just your mobo model number will do.
And please, dont buy any Nvidia GPU with model number below X600. Those are low power underclocked cards designed for laptops. Small laptops.

Your signature is too large. Please resize it to a maximum of 400 x 120 with the file size not exceeding 24000 bytes. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] - Mitnal |

Yes, it'll run on XP. It'll probably fit in your case - iirc only the 8800 series is really huge. (the PCI x16 connector is the same length for both; also, I've got one and a friend actually mistook it for the motherboard). Just wondering, why are your parents not allowing you to blow your own money on the computer while at the same time offering to pay for a new GPU? Are you sure its your own cash or maybe...your college fund?

Start showing a major interest in Pete Doherty and Amy Winehouse. Get tattoos. Join a biker gang.

I recently upgraded to a 256mb NVIDEA GEFORCE 8500 GT for 100 bucks on sale at Circuit City.
Runs EVE great.
Just make sure you have at least 2 gigs of RAM

GeForce 9600 GT is out....
By far the best 'budget' upgrade you can make atm, imho. Apparently the Ati Radeon HD 3870 comes close, but given Ati's horrible drivers i'd go for the GeForce, all other things being equal.

the 9600 isn't exactly a 'budget' card now, is it?
I guess we all have different definitions of the word though...

Edited by: Reiisha on 01/03/2008 05:58:54 IF you have any plans for gaming whatsoever, you're going to fall in that price segment. While you can look at cards like the 2600XT and 8600GT, they do fall short when compared to the 3870 and 9600GT - And if you game fairly regularly, the higher price is completely justified in that those last 2 offer more than 100% more performance than those first 2.
Over here, a 8600GT is about 90 Euros, where a 9600GT is about 160 Euros. If you *really* can't afford the 9600GT, go for the 512MB 8600GT (not the GTS, and not the 256/1024MB versions).
edit: Just saw the budget in the OP, didn't notice that before. For $50, you're not going to get a card you can play those newer games on, except if you're willing to take a chance on a second hand card. However, that is not something i'd advise anyone to do. Get your dad to rise the budget and get yourself a 512MB 8600GT.
