In a station with medical facilities it is possible to set another station as the home for your medical clone. And apparently that station does not have to have a medical facility itself.
I did just that and put my clone in a station without medical services. Then later I got podded (went on a suicide op with EVE radio). That meant that I was now in a station without medical facilities and without a proper clone. Consequently, I had to move to another station to get a new clone which could support my skill points.
If I had been podded while on my way I would have ended up in my alpha clone and lost a month or so of skill training. Why would anyone ever want to put themselves in that situation? That is, why would anyone ever want to put their clone in a station without clone bays? Or did I just misunderstand something?
Two related questions:
2. How is the list of stations that I can put clones in determined? I know I had one choice that was halfway across the galaxy, but it was definitely not all stations everywhere.
3. If I did end up in a clone that could not support all my skill points, what would happen exactly? Would I loose the last skills that I trained? So that I would be back to were I where X skill points ago?

Good point. Convenience I guess. I hadn't really thought about it until now, but my clone is in a station with medical bay too

It was something illogical like all the stations where your corp has offices (that's actually not that illogical) and all the stations of the corporation you started in when you created your character.

You lose 5% of the difference between your SP and the SP covered by the clone. That 5% is subtracted from the skill with the most skill points.

Since the first order of business after being podded should be to get a new clone, you would have to travel to an appropriate station anyway. But I see your point, especially given your answer to my second question.

Then it isn't as bad as I thought it was. But of course something to avoid. I figured you lost the whole difference. It's a bit strange that I haven't seen that explanation anywhere else. I thought I had read most things.

After Revelations, there was a (small) change in how this works. Thankfully Marine HK4861 spent some time figuring out how it works exactly: Linkage.

U can move ur clone to a another station of ur choice that has med facilities by paying a fee at that station...My clone was way over in Heimatar at RMS and I moved it to Amarr. Ditto with the clones for my two alts....If I got podded in Amarr I would have ended up at the med facility in Heimatar if I had not made the move..
