Well I'm currently working on a 3D animated video to use for recruiting. (It'll have several 3D animated scenes and some EVE footage from random battles and fleet movements.)
anyway here's the first large gun I'm making. a 425mm rail. and yes... that little dude in it is to scale with the gun. Just to give you an idea of how big that gun would be. (think we estimated the completed gun would be something close to 14' to 16' tall)

think you need quite a bit more time at modeling
and I recomend not using meshshmooth when modeling mechanical objects unless you use smothing groups

here is a link to a very good mechanical model with lots and lots of detail

lol, you do realize I am just a 20 year old guy who has never taken a class on 3D anything and just tinkers with Max from time to time, right?
I do apriciate the suggestion I just love my reflective surfaces a bit too much. Sides I was never all too good at modeling well so I hide my lack of talent behind reflections as they still look sexy and makes crappy edges harder to see. I honestly need to find someone like this guy who's like a modeling guru to show me the ropes.
(I will tinker without mesh smooth some and see if I can get what I want.)

If you havent noticed, the 425mm railgun is a single barrel gun that happens to have a dual gun icon. The actual gun model on ships has 1 barrel on a box like turret top. That would be a good dual 250mm railgun however. ----------------------------------- about:blank |

Who cares. Be creative and enjoy yourself.
I have the body of a supermodel. I just can't remember where I left it... |

Edited by: Myko on 05/04/2004 17:43:45 give up on Max and get a real 3d application...:)
its okay as a start, i definately agree regarding the mesh smooth. Its a shame Max has pretty poor NURBS modelling tools, as they'd be good for modelling stuff like this.

The person is WAY too big for that gun IMHO.

I think the pic isn't half bad as such, but what you've done there is a dual 250, not a 425.
AFAIK, 425 mm = 42.5 cm. The barrels there, apart from being dual, dno't look like they'd be able to support 425 mm of Slug death ;)
But, by all means, keep it up. It's nice to see people finding EVE inspiring, and wanting to try out different stuff. :) -Clipped Wings of LFC

Those barrels aren't big enough...
What I really want to see modelled is a person standing inside a 1400mm. :)

actually those barrels are, if they are to scale. look @ his lower leg vs the diameter of the barrel
now unless you like... 2 feet tall, that should be in the area of 1 1/3ft.'ish (maybe more, i dno, but it isn't bad)
imho, could more likely be a dual repeating 650mm artillery
and if you make 250mm rails, can you put a hamster inside of one

cgtalk has some good tutorials(most might be a little more advanced than where you're at atm)
www.3dbuzz.com has some good tutorials in video format. It works especially well if you've got more than one monitor and can follow along.

itdd be perfect for a dual 250 mm, good size, dual etc.. might need some more editing but quite good --- "this song reminds me of the girl i met on a schooltrip, she was really nice, and she really liked me. I forgot to ask her her phone number" - Nelix trist OMG im a pretzel!!! |

I don't think its half bad. Nothing better than practice to improve your 3d skills. If your after some really good advice try the following forums, they have some really talented people on their.

I highly recomend the 3dbuzz videos :)
but hey im only 24 years old myself, i have though taken a few classes and have two discreet diplomas for 3dsmax :)
but yeah, go through the 3dbuzz video tutorials for max and just experiment, most of the process of learning is trial and error

Meshsmooth or any variant there of are good for beginners. It's fairly straightforward and yields good results. Although NURBS are great they're really difficult without the experience and nothing beats polygons in flexibility. Good subdivs are fine too (XSI have great ones).
I'm a Maya-w***e so I'm with Myko on the MAX-part, but that's just because I'm full of myself. Any mid/highend app is more then enough for beginners to handle.
Good luck with your film. And pull the reflectivity down, will you? Get some dirt in there. :)

well polys or subd are the way to model, thats what all the big names use, nurbs is mostly used for cars, and its fantastic for that job
and if anyone thinks that 3dsmax isnt a "real" 3d program is just full of it
there are basicly a few major apps and a few minor ones, the major ones are xsi, 3dsmax, maya and lightwave. Minor apps, which are mostly specialised in its fields are for example, wings3d, silo, zbrush, motionbuilder, messiah, blender and lots of others.
Each of those programs have their strengths and weaknesses and none of the major programs are much better than the other ones. In my book the only program there that realy stands out is zbrush and even that was so amazing that it was used in the lotr movies.
