I'm not sure what is wrong, but when playing the trial of Eve my computer will just power off after 10-15 minutes of playing.
Naturally, my first thought was that the PSU failed. Nope, I got a new 650 Watt PSU and the same thing happened. So, I thought maybe something was screwed up on the computer. Nope. My other games don't give me any problems. Just Eve Online. Does anyone know why? At this point, I'm afraid of trying Eve again. It's messed up my Windows XP somehow, because it won't go to "Stand By" mode properly anymore. It just powers the computer off abruptly when it says on the screen "going to stand by mode".
I've seen similar posts to these "power off" problems with Eve, so I know I'm not alone. Unfortunately, I found no solutions either. I definitely won't be trying this game on any other computer, in fear that it'll mess it up.
Computer specs are:
ECS AM2 motherboard, with AMD Athlon 5200 dual core 2 gigs Kingston Ram Soundblaster Audigy EVGA 8600gt SSC, 256mb SATA, 500gb drive Windows XP Pro

Sounds like overheating. Have you tried dusting your computer?

I have dusted out my computer. It's not overheating. I have a temperature monitor and all is well with that. Plus, why would Eve cause my computer to shut off, but no other game? I played Lord of the Rings Online for a month, and no trouble. I've played other games, but the computer doesn't shut off.
Only when I play Eve does the computer shut off after 10 minutes. Makes no sense.

You know - I had this happen to me with another game - Civilization IV.
I'd play CivIV for about 5-10mins - then my computer would shut off.
I tried memory tests, 3d tests, other games, etc etc.
I think the solution was to remove all my additional perhipsal PCI cards (i.e. Firewire, Sound), do a clean install of Windows, and I think that fixed the issue.
What you are experiencing is not specifically an EvE issue, its just triggering the problem.

Funny - 3 threads today about the same problem. I dont think there is anything wrong with yout computer. Rather i guess some driver or adress conflict, called a "stop error" this causes your computer to restart to prevent damage in case of an adress conflict. Same here. All incidents like this seems to be related to nvidia cards so there might be the reason somwhere. If someone gets a clue plz TELL:)

windows | start | control pannel | system | advanced | Startup and recovery remove tick from System Failure | automatically restart
then check your logs
this will not fix the problem but will mean that the PC does not reset.
now, does this happen in full screen and windowed mode? does it happen with audio disabled ?

My setup is similar to yours but a little better anyways I was having the same problem. What worked for me was going to the video settings, turning on advanced settings so you could see the interval option with the drop down menu, change that to interval one. Supposedly this controls the anti-aliasing and by doing this it limits your card and it shouldn't overheat thus protecting itself and shutting down. Once I changed that setting I get no more lockups, have left the game on for 6-8 hours at a time with no problems. After my lockups my cpu/mobo temps were a good 15-20 degrees celsius higher, so that kind of hints to the problem.
Sounds crazy but after that whole boot.ini debacle, anything is possible. Still a mad wicked game and no problems since changing that to interval one.

the present interval isn't AA settings it is frame rate settings - basically it just means the display is limited to the frame rate - this makes sense for eve .. and will help a lot if your GFX card is having problems -- BIG Lottery, BIG Deal, InEve & Portrait Server
