Edited by: Mad Ahab on 06/04/2004 20:18:59 Unfortunatly I cannot use a Micro Power Auxillary Core so I cannot fit 3 Medium beams effectively but here is what I have.
High Slots 3x Dual Light Beam lasers (Infared) 1x Small Photon Smartbomb
Midslots 1xMWD 1x? (Waiting for gunning 5 as this could be a targeting computer)
Low 3x Cap Relays 1x Targeting Enhancer
When I switch some of the guns out to medium beams I cannot maintain My weapons and MWD so I use the Lights for now until my energy skills improve. Now, I can run level 2 missions in this setup and have tested this setup against Krull and won but it was a very tedious and long battle. Other than using medium beams (Which I am working on being able to maintain) is there a better way to set this ship up to maintain speed and increase damage output? Oh, I also tried shorter range crystals but the agility of the ship isn't enough to maintain the 1500m/s speed it needs to survive at an orbit in shorter ranges. The tracking on those weapons is poor and cannot lock well at 1km/s also. I am hoping to offset this with 2 tracking computers.
I am sure there is something I am overlooking but cannot figure out what it is.
I use a kestrel and have no problems doing level 3's I imagine the punisher should be just as balanced no?
Any feedback would be appreciated thanks.

the Kestrel can be armed with Cruise missiles easily and can kill 4 punishers with a good set-up

Yes, the frigate's best defense is speed. Speed works against your damage output when using turrets. Kestrels dont use turrets, and they also have the best frigate weapon availiable: cruise missiles.
In short, at the high speed recomendable to frigate pilots, the kestrel has teh best damage output since it doesnt rely on tracking.

Naw. My Rifter owns them anyday. Simply too fast for their missiles.

I think Incursus is the best non interceptor frigate for intercepting. The Kessie's cruises are just too slow.

Ahh okay,
I was thinking that the rifter would be a better choice for a turret ship since the tracking on projectiles seems to be better. Has anyone found a good setup for the Punny? It is such a fun ship to fly, would be a shame for a nice level 3 frigate like that to collect dust.

get a rifter. the more u play the game, the more u realize that it's the best frig out there. there are just so many possibilities with it and it's hella fast.

I'd go with a web and mwd. The goal is it make Kestrel slow and orbit it at 2000m/s, if possible
I don't think a small smartbomb would do much good, if Kestrel pilot times his shots rather than releasing a volley. 2000m/s speed is your only hope

Heh funny you mention that I tried to do the 2km a sec setup which added an AB Monopropellent and an Overdrive to the mix. I went over 2km a sec but couldn't maintain that speed in a 10km orbit (Speed would drop due to agility limitations of ship) also maintaining it with even small laser turret fire was impossible. Perhaps with more skill I would be able to. I have 3 in fuel conservation and 2 in energy management and energy systems so maybe more in those skills would help with that not sure. The tracking problems are what really get me though.

if you can't break the 2k/s speed limit, then there is no point in having MWD at all
Also, laser beams are like the worst weapon to use in a fast frigate. It's projectiles all the way, since they don't use cap and actually have easier fitting requirements

kestrel will beat it out majority of time but i agree with those that say rifter beats both in frig vs frig battles

Just to throw another ship into the discussion, imho the best one:
The breacher.
Same slots and speed as a rifter, but 3 launchers.

If you are doing agent missions in a frig I can see why you want to use Kestrel. Missiles are really good taking out npc as they canŠt really fly away from them. They are however not very cost effective but like I said really good in doing agent missions.
The cruise missiles can be countered in pvp with pure speed. To throw another ship into the discussion then I think an incursus can pack quite a punch. You do however need good skill to use a blaster incursus and you have to get into range. __________ Capacitor research |

pvp in frigates without a MWD is stupid. You have so much agility there you would be foolish not to take advantage of it.
I personally have a malediction with 3 named medium beams in high slots and mwd in med, and i can kill a kestrel easily as soon as i get within scrambling range.
Ive also tested the setup in a punisher and while slightly slower it can still do the same job.

Scrambling... something I haven't considered for it since it has 2 midslots. Are you target jamming or using a webbie? I thought about a webbie to keep the target still but haven't tried it yet.

me and another corp member have been hosting friendly pvp match's, me in a kestrel and him in a rifter.
We have had 2 duals so far and i have won both, you guys seem to love using cruise's and the like but I settle for heavy missiles instead and stagger the rate of fire to screw him up when he uses defenders or smart bombs ;)
Go kestrel!

You cant loose to a kestrel in a rifter, 1 mwd and you outrun all missles while the kestrel needs 2 med slots for it.
As someone else pointed out there is the breacher as well, it packs more punch then a rifter but has less hp, less speed, higher sig radius. And against a rifter it would die because of it has worse bonusses and can only fit 1 crap autocannon. -------- -The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs

Shevar,
Thanks for the Breacher/Rifter Comparison. I was considerinng a breacher because it seems like an improved version of the kestrel. But your points are solid. The rifter would just outrun the breacher's weaponry and while I can web with the Kestrel you sacrifice alot putting the web on the breacher with only 2 midslots available, like the cap battery to keep the mwd going for example.
