Hey guys
I'm looking to get into invention, but the biggest hurdle for me is really getting hold of BPCs. I can afford to invest in a BPO and buy everything else I need (about 3 bill of isk I can invest in total), but BP copying slots seem to be a rather big problem.
What are my options? As far as I can tell, I only really have 2: 1)Deal with the massive lab slot queues in empire, delaying my copies by weeks and basically severely limiting my rate of income 2)Set up a research POS
The 2nd option seems like the only option if I'm going to do this properly, but I'm not sure if it's really worth it. I mean, it seems like invention has tight enough profit margins as it is, would having to deal with managing a POS dig too much into my potential profits? Also, would it mean having to do excessive hauling of fuels and BPOs/BPCs from my trade hub to the POS (which will likely be at least 6-7 jumps from where I run my buy/sell orders and generally make my main income)?
Basically I'd really like to invest in something that takes me away from pure trading, but it seems like getting properly stuck into invention is much more effort than it's worth, and I'm better off just spending the time updating buy/sell orders.

Try option 3. Buy BPCs.

Or option 4.
Make a deal with a Player corp that runs labs in the first place. Some will let you join, others will let you rent space. ________________________________________________ Eterware Heavy Engineering

And don't forget option 5:
if your expected income from invention can't even sustain a POS, why make the SP commitment for invention in the first place?
Your analysis shows it isn't worth it.

I run a small'ish invention Corp, and my profits more then cover the cost of a Faction POS I have 2 alts dedicated to copying, and 2 mains dedicated to Invention.
The most important thing with invention is to be able to go with the trends, wich means having access to practically every BPO in game.
I also maximise my profits by buying in all the Advanced Materials needed to make the T2 Components for the T2 Bpc's I invent
All in all my total profits amount to 400mill a month for roughly 5-10hrs ingame a week, sometimes far less.
Any help you need, feel free to mail me if you need a hand.
Regards

For me inventing modules works fine and u get some isk back but the marked is messed up with ship invention it seems to me. Building a T2 BS costs about 800 Mio and u can sell it for about 600 aint it funny:)
Find someone to help you copying in the beginning and try if invention is worth it befor setting up a pos...
Id rather stick to moonminig atm:)

I keep telling people that you can't fix stupid, but just let all the people who are selling lower than cost do their thing and then come back into the business.
Til that point just refine their stuff if it gets too low and sell them back their minerals.

Eyee hit one of the nails on the head. Other inventors can be really bad businessmen. I think it largely stems from:
- Not counting their datacores as an expense - Inventing stuff in a saturated market - Wanting a quick turnaround and massively undercutting prices
If you want to get into invention, you need to understand what your expenses REALLY are. That includes calculating the value of your datacores, even if you got them from an R&D agent. It makes no sense to use datacores you could have sold for 200m isk and not count them in as an expense.
You also need to look at the market details and see what is selling and what isn't. If there are 5000 of an item on market, but only 14 sell a day, the market is saturated and find something else.
Finally, you need to be patient and understand that it might take a few days for your items to sell, but they will sell even if you charge more than someone is charging two jumps over, if you are selling them in the "right" station.
That said, planting a high sec POS is really the best route to take if you are SERIOUS at inventing. You just need to be really serious and put in the time to ensure you are inventing enough and selling at enough of a profit to pay for the POS and all your expenses.
If you just want to dabble, and you're in the Lonetrek area, just drop me a note and I'll be happy to run some copies for you.

I recommend option 2. Costs to run a faction medium tower is around 100m per month. You can squeeze in around 8 copy slots if I remember correctly. If you use advanced labs you get a .65 copy time instead of the 1.0 + wait time.
Don't forget are also get invention, PE, and ME slots in each lab all with time bonuses. So while copying for yourself you can be doing research on bpo to sell.
You get something like 30 slots total. So good idea to have alts researching as well. If you have an efficent op, you can make more then 5x cost of fuels.
