I don't understand this game one bit....I just downloaded the trial and I'm trying to figure out what the point of the game is....but all I can see to do is move my little ship and sit back while it takes him forever to actually get where I told him to go
Is there anyway to leave your ship? What is the purpose of this game?
I don't get it :(

Well firstly, you can *warp* to things a long distance away. You can leave your ship and end up in your pod. The purpose of this game is to have fun.
EVE is a sandbox MMO. It's not like WoW where you grind to 70 and then raid. EVE allows you to do whatever you want. You can become a trader and play the market, you can become a pirate and kill innocents. You can become a bounty hunter and go after pirates, you can become a mercenary and hire yourself out. You can become a miner and spend your time assaulting veldspar, you can become a manufacturer and make items and ships for sale. You can make your own corporation, you can join another.
Once you're in a corporation you can engage people in wars, you can set up player owned stations, and if you get big enough and start an alliance you can start gaining sovereignty of territory in nosec and build massive ships and pewpew everyone.
My advice? Do the tutorial even if it's boring and learn how to fly. Ask questions [but don't be annoying] and think about where you want to end up. Plan your course there, and get to it!

Naiyr the best question to ask yourself is this; What do you want to be doing 3 months from now if you stick with Eve?
I started out thinking I was going to be an industrial character and I planned for it. With Eve you really do have to look to the future. Once I got my base industrial stuff in place I decided to branch out a bit and do some combat. I've got a good balance going right now and am skilling up to fly a Battleship. Once I get that, then I switch back to industrial for the long run.
Eve will be what you make of it. Just plan for it and don't be afraid to try different things. Most importantly read up about the game, ask others questions, and get as much info as you feel you need to enjoy yourself.

Also you dont have to think in just the confines of the game such as "fighter, trader, miner, manufactorer"
There are many people that have come up with their own concepts. People have made corps that do banking and loans, run multi bil isk lotteries, Haul goods through unsafe space, and many other ideas.
In eve you can do many many things, dont let the lack of "direction" fool you. Join a decent corp and you will soon get the hang of the game.

This game is entirely overwhelming to the new player, I just started 2 weeks ago and I was utterly lost at the beginning, make sure you do the tutorial at least, and then find a player corp with people that'll help you out. Other then that, just use google a lot.

READ the Player Guides.. Complete the Tutorial... Do look at the Item Database off-line (on left under Eve Online) or in-game under the Market...U have to put some effort into this game--it's like school--u have to study.... Use the EFT eve fitting tool. Use EveMon to figure best way to train to certain lvl.....

You could try mining, that's definitely not fun.

What is the point of all and everything, buggered if i know, the same can be said of this or any game, like whats the point of football. But.... well you should read the site, the forums, all the guides listed in rookie section to see what you do, its easier to tell you what you can't do as you are the limiting factor in eve.
oh! did we mention, DO THE TUTORIAL and the first refered 10 missions, that will aid your understanding and give you the basics.
useful tip: right click is the key to understanding.

The thing with Eve is that no one is going to tell you or even show you what to do.
YOU have to figure out what YOU want to do within the confines of the game mechanics.
That is the way Eve is designed.
