I am looking to pickup a laptop to play eve oniline on while at lunch or on the road (figuratively i mean, not while actually driving). I do not want to spend a lot since i have a quad core monstor at home, which i overspent on . the range i am looking at tend to have the following types og graphics cards; Intel« Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 and the SiS Mirage 3+. I know the mirage is DX9 but that is not the be all and end all.
Will these run eve? i am not looking for premium graphics or the best screen resolutions. i just want it to do some mining, skill management, boring corp stuff etc. Have you got one of these cards or a predessor in your laptop, does it work? I know that there was a font issue on the mirage 1-2 is that still an issue. Any advice would be appreciated. |

Dell XPS... I have one and I don't have anything to complain about.
There's only one sig that matters... and that's Radius. |

Core 2 Duo 1.66GHz 256mb Nvid Gforce Go 8600M GT 2Gig ram
Fantastic gaming lappy, I'm loving it. Absolutely no probs (and looks great) running EVE without premium gfx. Nice widescreen too.
Just park up outside some house where they havent secured their wirelss network properly... place a few buy orders, change a skill and grab some lunch :)
Had to remove Vista and all the Dell bloatware plus install WinXP to get it the way I wanted.. but I'm a happy man at the price and results.

Don't buy either of those, both are rubbish (especially the SiS one). Try and get a laptop with an NVidia or ATI GPU in it. |

Yes as per the last post essentially anything other than the Intel or S3 chipsets.
The basic ATI/AMD/Nvidia ones will run the game. My laptop has a ATI 200M graphics chipset and it will run the classic content at a playable level. Thats a chipset thats about 3 years old.
Turion/AMD laptops usually come with ATI spec graphics in them.
Just avoid the Intel graphics at all costs.

I use a laptop to play Eve - a Dell Inspiron 1720 with a 8600M GT. Gets a bit warm from time to time but has never crashed and still lets me run stuff in the background.
I'd recommend what Bombcrater has already stated and don't get anything with an integrated chipset - go for something that has NVidia or AMD in. Any recent dedicated graphics chip on a laptop should be sufficient to play Eve, at least in Classic mode. - - - - - -

Addition: I also play with a Dell D620. Though I have to run classic client with all settings at lowest it's quite playable (even fleetbattles as long as I don't zoom in too much). So I'd guess that any computer better than a d620 would be able to handle eve (though I'd recommend a laptop with a better gfx card).

I'm interested to know the same as FireflyKayley (nice chick btw :) ) I'm looking into getting my dad a new laptop for his company so he can do some word processing and stuff like that from home. Now I'm wondering if a laptop like this (most likley to have Intel X3100 integrated gfx) will be able to run EVE?
Cheers!

The intel x series supports all the way up to DX, 10 but still I would never recommend it for gaming.
Your best bet is to go with something from ATI or Nvidia, if you are tech savy enough you could just go looking for any car featureing Radeon or Geforce chip sets.

I use a Dell D620 also, but these are Business laptops primarily and as such have basic gpu's, in this case Intel. It manages with Eve adequately but I have had problems with previous drivers. Also for general gaming it's quite unsuitable, having issues with a variety of some of my other favorites, inparticular Europa Universalis III, which it wont render properly. I'm also looking for another laptop, more suited to playing Eve on the train on my daily commute, the 620 is a little large and bulky. I think you're best off with an ATI or Nvidia gpu, as stated above. Eve is quite scalable, but no guarantee that intel, or sis for that matter, will not have problems in the future.

Edited by: Reterick on 19/05/2008 01:08:32 hi, i have recently purchased a toshiba p200d-137 equium laptop, and pretty happy with what i need it for but a bit surprised when it struggles to run eve classic...
the spec is;
AMD 64 athlon 1.8GhZ x 2 2 GiG DDR2 RAM ATI radeon X1200 3d card, with 312MB memory Windows home premium 17" true bright screen.
Never brought it to really play eve, but i hope the spec gives u some idea wot to go for if want to play it above 20-30 FPS...
I would of said the radeon card is to blame as the rest of the system should be man enough to cope..
worth spending over ú450.00 imho..
hope this helps |

Always check if its an ati or Nvidia gpu in the laptop, then check if they got dedicated ram or shared
if shared dont buy as their a waste of money
Running a core duo 2 tl5600 2gb ram and a gforce 7600 with 512 dedicated ram
runs trinity fine at 1400x900
(hp dv9092ea to be more precise :) )

Edited by: Marikitus on 08/06/2008 08:56:25 Well Firefly my sugestion is to pickup a laptop with a Nvidia Card, thats the best option because all the software companies are using Nvidia cards. I work in a software company (dont going to mention the name) but its is the bet optio.
What laptop to buy, easy very very easy, if u have money an Alienware, those are made for play but look the specifications make sure all the components. next one AHTEC those are very very nice, and are very chear, and the last ones Dell XPS. I remember you again to take a look all the configurarions of the laptops and change something if you wnat a better one.
for Laptop driver i suggets this site, home the moderators of the forums dont delete de link its for drivers only

Both the Intel GMA X3100 and the SiS Mirage 3+ do the bare minimum to acheive Vista (DX10) compatibility - neither is suited to "performance" gaming - go for Nvidia Geforce Go 8600 or similar (as others have suggested).
