Hi all,
Sorry if this has been asked before. But currently I am running with three After Burners and getting some decent speeds. Is there any advantage in swapping over to MWD....how are the two substantially different?
Thanks for any help. I just don't know if I want to invest the time training MWD if I'll never use them.

Just check the stats. You can go to the Market and Show Info on any item and it tells you what it can do and what you need to use it. MWDs cut your cap and shield by 25% each, which is pretty serious, but they raise your speed by 500% base instead of 35% base.
MWDs also require Navigation 4 and Afterburner 4 to use.
Basically, if you need to travel in Wild West space or you need to charge in to fight (autocannons, pulse lasers, blasters, smartbombs), then you might want MWD. If you just want to go a little faster and are fighting (and thus needing cap and shield), Afterburners work well for that. ----------------------------------------------- "The Spartans ask not how many, but where they are." -Agis II of Sparta

You havent trained MWD ? Do it now ! Any char older then a month or two should have it.
Afterburners cant compare to MWD's. For example: 3 afterburners give you 3x 40% extra speed, which thru some nice strange equasions total you a veru nice boost.
One MWD will do the same, but in shorter time, and sparing you 2 medslots.
Imo, the best way to travel is in a ship with two MWD's. One burst of two MWD's together will make your frig reach 5km/s easy (mostly more), your cruiser will reach 2km/sec and your BS will make 1km/sec easy.
It's worth it.
Also, on frigates, an MWD makes it possible to breach teh 2km/sec treshold and can make you safe from cruise missiles by simply outrunning them.

Thanks guys. I have AB5 so I should have spent the time on MWD.... LOL
Is a MWD useful for say getting to a jump gate quicker or is it not controllable in that fashion? I imagine it was more like a slingshot...that once the MWD was active ou couldn't change direction. Is that wrong?

You should learn to use MWD, but all is not lost w/AB5 as you can fit AB10 on interceptors, which produces the same speeds as MWD w/o any penalties.

I don't have this problem.
Good luck!

instead of using 3 ab`s to boost your speed, use 1 mwd and a sheild booster and cap battery if you want to replenish your 25% losses, infact sometimes you get more cap and sheilds doing it this way

MWD on a frigate will get you to the gate so fast it won't even have time to get max speed.
On a cruiser, one burst from the MWD will get you going fast enough that you won't have slowed down too much after it peeked when you hit the gate.

Unless of course you fly a Kestrel. They are sooo slow.

Not slow, at 250m/s base speed, but heavy: 1700000 kg. That affects MWDs and ABs, meaning less speed gain from using them.

Right should have pointed that out in the original post. To add to the topic though. You really can't compare the AB with the MWDs. Yeah you lose shields and cap but you cut the amount of damage you recieve by tenfold. Rarely do you find an NPC that can effectively do damage to you going 1.5km/s or higher. Only certain ones can and a shield booster heals the damage up pretty quickly. You can use a cap booster to sustain your cap.
