A week or two ago this was discussed in which it was said that: Frigates have 1-5 crew, Cruisers a few hundred, battleships have a few thousand.
A Leviathan Titan is just a bit longer that the Super Star Destroyer from Star Wars, and the SSD has a crew of about 280,000, so you could compare that I think.
There was a story in the news recently about a gunner, I believe, dieing in the tournament to keep his gun running until the last second instead of abandoning ship. ___________________________________________

There are 2 schools of thought on this issue.
1. There is no crew just the pod, there is no in-game evidence of crews, no in-game mechanics to support crews so in reality there are no crews.
2. There are a few EVE stories that talk about the crew on board the ships so alot of players like to believe there are little people on the ships.
I'm in the first school of thought, if there are crews, who employed them, what do they do, what do they eat, where did they come from etc...
It has been a discussion point since EVE launched and I believe that CCP have thought about implementing a crew function into the game i.e having crews running systems...the better skilled the crew is the more efficiently they run each system...this might work but i prefer the thought that it's just you onboard in the dark ether The fortunes of war, i'll tell you plain, is a wooden leg or a golden chain. |

Yes. Ships have crew. Fact.
T2 ships have smaller crews then T1 ships due to technological improvements and capsule integration into ship design.
T1 ships were originally designed to have standard crew and bridge command, then retrofitted for capsule command. T2 ships were designed with capsule command in mind.

There are no "schools of thought", you muppet! Ships have crews. Period.
Do you want me to dig out the Dev-post where CCP Ginger stated this?

Edited by: Arkios Odymei on 09/03/2008 05:58:11 Alright, here we go again...
Read this Eve Chronicle.
And this short story has a nice section on the fourth page in. Quote: Mattias focused the drone cameras on the Blackbird, inspecting the massive gashes in its hull. Judging from the metallic carnage, he estimated that sections of at least 6 decks were now exposed directly to space. Somewhere beneath where he was sitting, hundreds of crewmembers were sealing off compartments, fighting electrical fires and desperately struggling to keep his ship's vital systems functioning. How many of them died because of this, he wondered. As the captain of the ship, he was sealed inside a pod made of an ultra-strong, Jovian-manufactured alloy and neurologically connected to the Blackbird's systems. Inside of it, so long as the ship was intact, the captain was immune from harm. ... To Mattias, it was all so impersonal. Because of the technology, a captain could skipper numerous ships over the course of a lifetime without ever meeting a single crewmember from any of them. Mattias was one of the few who made an effort to meet at least some. It seemed like the least he could do in exchange for their unquestioning faith in his abilities, and their trust in him to keep them alive.
There were also a couple recent RP news articles about the crews of ships in the Alliance tournament.
The fact is that the Pod only replaces the Bridge crew. All ships (aside from the smallest Frigates) need some form of human crew onboard. Frigs usualy have 1-3 crew (including the pilot), Cruisers have sever hundred, and teh kilometer long Battleships have Thousands. There are more of these schematics around for other ships, but they are hard to find (they were released a looooong time ago).
Read this post from a member of ISD talking about the fate of crews. So try not to blow up any ships... Think of the crew
And yes, I collect these links for when ppl ask about ship crews, or falsly claim that the ships dont have crews. ------------------------------------------------------------------

Why would the ships have windows if they didnt have crews? I don't see how anyone could think it was just a pod...

The crews are there, but they are all in a 'melange' induced trance and are often being 'entertained' by the women of Rossak. Who, according the author of the prelude trilogy, are hot as.

Usualy its the tree-hugging gallente roleplayers who have to lie to themselves by thinking thier ships are fully automated or something. They dont want to face the dark and gritty truth that everytime they get blown up, they just got a few thousand ppl killed too ------------------------------------------------------------------

Wrong. The two schools are a) the right one and b) the wrong one. Period. Ships have crews, they have always had crews, CCP has said that they have crews. There is no room for debate or interpretation...ships have crews.
If you want to be in denial, fine, but don't spread misinformation.

Must have missed my post.
It would be pretty cool to have a fourth row of ship slots for crew's of different quality, looting hulls would be like rescuing the crews. Even rare faction crews would be pretty cool, the larger the ship, the more crew slots to fill. ___________________________________________

The crew fitting idea is interesting, you would finally get a tangible benefits for fitting an exotic dancer (rather than leaving him/her in the hold next to your cap charges).
I wouldn't mind an "upkeep" or some such, but that is just me being a lame RPer and doesn't really help gameplay (except for forcing me to keep my station-fleet-size down.

Crews = good
I have been a proponent of crews in eve since the beginning. In '03 I thought when I bought eve that I would be in command of a ship with a crew. I had even hoped for more direct control of my ships systems too. oh well BUT, in an economy that 'creates" isk out of nothing haveing a crew would be a great isk sink, AND could offer you some added bonuses. This idea could be expanded to crew training, hiring mercs/veterans etc. . . use you imagination. Even wepons that killed only crew ;)after all what is a ship without a crew? salvage. in anycase this has been around the forums for ages so nothing new said here.
ps my crew would wear big red/white targets on their chests

There was an ISD news report on the crews on Capsuleer ships entering the Alliance Tournament a few weeks ago, so Yes, beyond the shadow of a doubt, ships have crews.
Also, there is a chronicle detailing a capsuleer hiring someone for his crew.

I think we have to let go of all star wars, and star trek material and think of Eve as a universe defined and inspired by new ideas. In star wars, all movies start with something like "in a galaxy, far far away." Eve should be "in the VERY VERY distant future" I would think that when you have a system where you plug your brain into a machine that teach you stuff, I would think that the inter relationship between microchip and man-brain has become so advanced that one man could control an entire ship alone if that man has gone through enough skill time, and prepared his brain for the task.
That makes sense to me. Makes no sense in Star Wars, and certainly not Star Trek, but in Eve: online, it makes a lot of sense.
