Hi, When I saw Eve I thought this looks like the game for me (I had previously played WOW but got bored with the grind). I have got myself a trial account and have finished the tutorial and I am now left with the "what do I do now" stage that I think people have asked before. My question is, have I missed the point? I am doing the mining bit to raise money, I have killed a couple of pirates (only just) but this just seems like the WOW grind but in space. I have asked people whether they thought it was worth subscribing and they have all said yes. I think that I am missing something or I am not playing properly? I have only had my account for about 5 days, maybe I haven't played long enough. If you subscribe, then why, what do get that I don't seem to so far? Cheers, Tetog

other people.
make plans, set yourself a goal. There's little handholding in Eve.

EVE is all about teamplay. Try to find a good corporation.

Its the PVP.
EVE PvP is where it is at for me. The consequence of getting shot down is pretty grim, as you loose all the stuff on your ship, and that makes for a thrill and a little evil lauhter when you down someone in a valuable ship.
Making the ISK to finance pvp is still a grind though.

First thing I'd do is ask yourself what you like doing. Is it shooting roids, rats or people? Do you like to trade or produce items. Do you just want to hoon around EVE taking in its staggering size and seeing the same 10 system backgrounds time and time again. Or is it the social aspect of just sitting back and chatting with like minded people.
After you answer that question start looking for a corp that caters to those desires.
EvE is a sandbox, you really make it what you want it to be. Hell, what other game would robbery, spying and scams be considered part of the game mechanics.
Myself, after being part of a couple of corps decided I liked the social aspect and living in deep low sec the best. So I joined a corp in the local time zone and have just sat back and had fun. I'd also suggest trying out some different things to see if you enjoy them, like missioning, mining, ratting, etc. Civil Disobedience is still Disobedience The most damage is done by those that know how and not why |

The point of EVE is to go out there and do whatever you want.
The game is largely open. You can mine, rat, pvp, manufacture, trade, and all manner of things you can think of.
The "point" of EVE is you make your own "point".
Unfortunately games like WoW where you are constantly guided as to what to do next on the treadmill to max level don't prepare new MMO players for the innovative gameplay that exists in EVE.
The biggest tools you require to play EVE is your brain and a good amount of imagination.
Good luck to you.
EDIT: Think generally what you would like to do and then try to join a player corp for that activity. You will learn much faster this way and the Help channel is your friend. Join it.

Thanks for all your replies. I think I'm starting to get the idea that there is no one answer to the question and that its whatever you make it. I think mining is boring (no pun) on its own and needs to be done for a purpose other than to just get money eg pvp. I think for me trading is probably the thing combined with a bit of mission stuff and some fighting. Thanks again for the replies Tetog

The point in EVE is that there is no point. You know, just like in life. Life, like EVE, is exactly what you make of it. Greatest strength, greatest weakness.

If you don't like it you don't have to play it. It's horses for courses. I couldn't stand WoW because of the illiteracy rate of the subscribers. A game like Entropia Universe was good for me due to it's real cash economy tending to keep the younger pups out. I was spending too much in there so came out and arrived here.
eve is nice because it models an economy without the pressure of it being actual money (for most of us, i'm excluding farmers). Player interaction is ok, but not great, I mean in EU we could have a party and meet up and chat and not feel like we were missing anything because there was no subscription so we weren't wasting money. So there was the obligatory 24hr New Year party for example. I think that's where eve is lacking, it's less likely that you meet up, just for a chat with anyone. But ambulation is another topic.

You can RP, though you'll find that EVE's storyline is really nothing more than a background setting. You'd think RPing would give the game much desired depth but the game dynamics, the player vs player aspect of the game, usurps the storyline to the point you'll wonder if it's really worth RPing at all.
So yeah, you still have the grind, get stuff, level up, grind, get more stuff gameplay that you see in all other MMOs. You can join a corp and or alliance and get involved with the community that way, which can be enjoyable. Another popular option in EVE is to become a pirate and try and make a name for yourself by killboard stats and "uber-p0wnage" videos.

RP is a perfectly valid and CCP supported option in the game. The only difference is that you need to RP in a completely different way than you would in a game like WoW. RP in EVE is supposed to heavily involve the PvP aspect of the game, creating the story as you go along rather than trying to figure out grand plots.
