How about fighting lag AND saving valuable developer time by kicking stuff thats so broken it makes my eyes bleed.
Strike everything that east bandwidth and is utterly useless from the client. Like the bio. CCP clipped it with a patch, that was unfortunate but fair enough. Then they clipped my bio again a month later, trashing one of my characters bio again, this time without warning or patch notes. Its gotten to the point where I don't invest time into making a worthwhile bio anymore.
Probably nobody uses the calculator in Eve either, with start -> run -> calc just an ctrl+esc away. Especially not those who lived through the months of seeing the built-in calculator eat every second keypress.
Last thing in line: The notepad. I used to keep some things there, like mission notes. Do I have to be punished for that? You bet! Now all my mission notes went the way of the bio, i.e. the second half is just gone.
Shouldn't it be development 101 that if you make a textbox, and want to limit the amount of text in it probably to save some database space, you should put a hard limit on it and disallow people from typing more than you want? Noooooo ... not so in Eve, where after years and years people's notes are sent to digital nirvana instead.
I should have known to stop using it when the notepad was degraded into the "Accessories" button along with ... omg look there's Mr. Calculator too!
Seriously, this isn't about lag really. This is, as usual, about user (un)friendliness of the client.
Please CCP, clean up those essential and easy to fix things (I could go on and list at least 20 more), thank you, fly safe, sincerely your, why am I still paying, cya in space,

Why don't you just not use those tools, it's not like they have anything to do with lag in fleet fights.
Let the dev's spend their time on improving the game instead of removing features that have nothing to do with lag and have no effect on anyone if not used.

Edited by: Agathe Hira on 10/03/2008 14:05:47 Why cut content from the game to speed it up for the minority that's dumb enough to bring hundreds of people into some system and then wonder why they crash ? It won't fix it anyway, if they get away with 1000 they'll just bring 2000.
Cap max ship number in systems in some way (do it smartly based on alliance, ownership and type or they'll spam systems with NPC corp alts - think of it like a massive alliance tournament battle). That will cut the lag down and make people bring better ships to combat. And will give lag a permanent solution that people will just have to learn to adapt to.
For me the server runs fast enough as it is.

How large is a massive text file anyway? A couple hundred kilobytes? A few lines of note is like 400 bytes. LOL
Just the engine glow requires a hundred times the system resources to run I bet. ___________________________________________

Fix lag by deleting the calculator. If I switch off my monitor will that also boost my FPS?

As an IT guy, using all my experience, I can say that ... no one can make assumptions the way another code works until actually seeing the way it's done.
However, I would dare assume the calculator is client-side. I pretty much doubt the calculations you enter are being sent to the server for processing and back. _______________________________________________ The ShadowMaster -

Yes but you don't send your engine glow to the server, lol..
I don't get why they don't store notes locally though..

30 Day Bans are being handed to people who point out that "Need For Speed" is just CCP removing Eve content and hoping nobody notices or gets upset. True story.
Seeing as Need For Speed has yet to deliver a single measurable improvement, and so far is directly accountable for many game aspects being watered down, it is hard to imagine why anybody still has any faith at all in any Dev Blog that contains those three infernal words.
Yet it doesn't seem to stop some people. They have gained nothing, lost a lot, and they are still waving the flag. It's beyond reason. No wonder CCP feel they can now hack and slash without fear from the community, they must be laughing like hyenas at us. |

I fail to see how the inclusion of those features negatively impacts your gameplay in any way. They certainly don't contribute to lag, server or client-side. ---------------- Tarminic - 33 Million SP in Forum Warfare Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.79 |

Drones are part of the big-bad lag monster. Especially when theres alot of drones on grind that has lost its owner.
Also, when storing and launching drones your FPS drops like a rock

It's common sense but the coders in eve tend to be lazy about this sort of thing. It's the type of thing they just do left and right in this game because they figure it's not important.
When it comes to the bottom line, their subscription levels and the money they make, they're pretty much right.

How about the huge chunk of NPC goods which are never traded? Crash Test Dummies, Planetary Vehicles, etc. Buy price is always 1000% that of a sell price. Hell I can't even see why we have Passengers as there is no game dynamic that supports the moving of people from station to station.

Nerf my notes and me and my fifteen characters will quit.
No but seriously, I do use both them and the calculator. And I honestly doubt that either causes any server-side lag, even with my limited understanding of IT. But I mean, how could they? The notes only interact with one player at a time, and are only made up of text. I just don't see it.
Though I agree, the calculator needs a boost. ------

Database access times aren't the bottleneck here, removing them wouldn't serve any purpose. ---------------- Tarminic - 33 Million SP in Forum Warfare Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.79 |

Bio's are very useful functions that I use to determine the status of my enemy or possible friend. Removing this removes intel that I use on a regular basis.

I use the calculator extensively. I play full screen so alt-tabbing just for windows calc isn't an option.

I use the notepad extensively too. Removing it would be detrimental to all my intel I keep there. not a good idea.
So essentially, your ideas would cripple the game for me. So no.

Please, read between the lines a bit. That subject was SARCASM. To catch some attention. Whatever.
Ofc this isn't really causing significant lag (database load however, very likely, in case of the notes).
What I am really saying is improve these things, or don't BOTHER with them in the first place. Make the notepad have a hard limit so no notes are lost. Stop crippling the bio. Improve the calculator.
