Edited by: Nebulus Bycron on 10/03/2008 15:03:52 Ships in Eve are great and all, but something that seems lacking to me is an essence of uniqueness to the ships. Every Megathron is exactly the same as the other in statistics before the addition of rigs/mods. Slight variation in ships would add an interesting and fun dynamic to eve. There are a few ways to do this that I have come up with that seem a reasonable addition to a future expansion. What I was thinking is the addition to a random attribute slot in the ship's description. This random attribute would range from 1-3% in modifiers to a basic attribute such as a particular resist, armor/shield/hull hp, weapon damage, ect ect. Some possible ways this attribute system could be implemented #1 Only ships manufactured by players would have a random bonus attribute. #2 When making copies of a blueprint, a particular chance would occur to acquire a copy of that blueprint with an enhanced attribute. This just makes sense to me since there are all these scientists are out there, yet can't improve on a ship's original design a little bit? #3 Ships seeded by NPC corps have a small %chance to come with random attribute #4 Create a new station service like "pimp my ride" shops that you pay a fee corresponding to ship class to add a random attribute. These attributes could either be permanent or you could keep paying this fee to reroll till you obtain the attribute you want.
I just think this system would add to the overall playing experience to the game and give the players something extra to work for. You could slightly modify your ships depending on your play style and then not everyone's ships would be nearly as generic as the next. If this system works out, this could also be possible expanded to all mods for a much grander RPG experience! Let me know what you think of this concept.

I quite like the idea of that with a BPC - each stat could be changed by +/- 1 or 2% so they would all be very similar but not identical.
Would be nice, actually. -- Ralara / Ralarina |

This has been discussed before - the biggest problem is that currently each Item in the database is defined by its type, i.e. a packaged Megathron is the same item no matter where it is and who has it. In order to introduce different versions of ships requires an entirely new type, which means that you have to basically duplicate the ship aside from a 3% change to one attribute.
I've always been a fan of introducing some more variants to different ships though. ---------------- Tarminic - 33 Million SP in Forum Warfare Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.79 |

Bah, browsing the market... It could be done in a nice way if someone sat down and thought about it. That one isn't going to be me though.
Anyway, I kinda like the idea of added customization and variety on ships. I would love to have the option of e.g. nerfing stat X in order to boost stat Y on a ship. Then you could really specialize your ship in a role. Kharadran Sullath's Slow Scorpion of Added Ewar Capabilities BPC ftw! ------

I believe that I read in a dev blog back in 1992 that this idea was going to be introduced to Tech III items.
Tech III would only be available via invention and be "different" in the same sense as what you are describing above.
I'm probably completely wrong however.

I wholly support the idea.
Get the special stuff off the market, and leave the standard things there - just like it now, in fact, with faction-ships, items and so on. The current market in EVE for most items is fully homogeneous, and no matter what level of skills you've gotten your character to, the two things you can do to sell is either cut your profit margin closer than the next guy, or research tech II.
Creating slight differences in manufactured items (BPC differences I'd think would be the way to do it), and supporting a better form of marketing and such through the contract-system, or through an in-game bazaar, would open up the market much more. Of course, it'd probably annoy the min/max'ers in the game, but I can live with that ;-)
EDIT: Oh, and do custom colours and such as well! Mihtjel's Bright Yellow Megathron Blueprint Copy ;-)

CCP have discussed the idea before and do like the concept of different quality items from different producers, and even brand names. However, there are currently technical limitations to it around the very core of their database and market system. There would also need to be a lot of thought given to how browsing the market works when these things exist.
So, basically it's a good idea, and one CCP supports, but it would require a lot of work (CCP's words!) to implement and so will likely be a good way off before it happens.

Yep it was, I believe they said it would have your corp name on it as well. For example an Evoke Rupture, resists on its structure ;-)

Yes, I agree that these items shouldn't be allowed to be put on the market. There would be too much clutter and it would take too much time. I also don't think that the items should be sold on the contract system either. I like the idea of a bazaar. If people wanted to post 25 variations of 1 ship on the current contract system it would be insane.
