avoiding PvP is easy when u just started just don't fly in systems under 0.5 security .. and you can repair your ship in station under the repairshow butten double click on your ship and then there will be a butten repair it will cost you some money but not really much :)

Eve is a skills based game so there are many, many skills available to support various actions and playstyles. If you go into "Market" at your starting stations (it's the "Z" and coins icon on the right side of the screen) you'll be able to see what skills are available. Most of the ones you'll want/need for now will be visible there. The tiny blue "i" icon will, when pressed, show information about the skill. (This icon and information gathering is standard for most items or available from the right-click menu item "Show Info.")
You will need to buy the skill packs (so check out the price and spend some time determining which ones you'll need first based on how fast you make money/ISK) before you can start training them and some of them will require you to have prerequisite skills at a certain level.
Be sure to ask questions in your corp channel (the "Corp" tab of your chat box) - there should be many other newbies there, along with (hopefully) some old timers.
The racial/breed differences are not very large, unlike other games where race/class make a big difference, and mostly have to do with starting attributes (which solely determine skill training time for now) and starting skills. Generally, people choose the race/breed that appeals to them visually or from a role playing perspective.
Good luck and Welcome to Eve!
