Old news.
I learned all what was said in that article a few years ago in high school health. It's actually roughly the same stats for guys as well from what I remember.
Don't see why it's news worthy, tbh, if it's included in high school curiculiums (spelling?) from a few years back. THE AWARD FOR MOST RIDICULOUS DREAM EVER GOES TO... |

Edited by: Ryysa on 13/03/2008 20:52:28 A lot more than that are infected with HSV-1 and HSV-2.
HSV-1 being the herpes simplex virus responsible for your lips and HSV-2 being the herpes simplex virus responsible for genital herpes.
Most people don't know they have it, and actually in most people HSV-1 and/or HSV-2 are not recurring, meaning it's not as a big deal as everyone makes it out to be.
Also, to scare you some more. Condoms do not protect completely, or even close to completely from HSV-2... There is about a 30% chance to get infected during 1 year of a casual relationship if one of the partners is a carrier (but without outbreaks). Using a condom reduces that by 100%, meaning that you still have a 15% chance to get infected. You could also get unlucky and get it from a single intercourse. HSV-1 you can get from kissing etc.
That's why they are so widespread. No big deal though, if you have a decent immune system you get it once in your life, and it doesn't appear again.
There are a bunch of such diseases actually (chickenpox, infectious mononucleosis etc.)

Indeed, most people go "STD ZOMG". Also there is no point to bash america over it - from what I know HSV-2/HSV-1 infection rates are similar (albeit lower) over here in europe, too.
About 80-90% in young adults for HSV-1 and 12-15% for HSV-2 IIRC. That's only HSV though, not including others.

Same most places, I imagine, many STDs are present for the person's entire life(even if non-symptomatic), so they just accumulate.

Well, all the herpes viruses are present for the entire life.
Just dormant. They don't do anything when you have a well working immune system, but there is no cure either.
So it's not "some places".

Don't know what you are referring to by as "cure". There is a vaccine being developed, and according to recent news, a solution is likely to be found soon. The previous vaccine failed btw.
Antiretroviral therapy is by no means a cure for anything either.
And even when there will be a vaccine developed, it still won't be a cure.

But you can't cure herpes, anywhere. It doesn't mean that you have it visible for the rest of you life. You can have 1-2 outbreaks and that's it. Same with HPV. And we know what HIV leads to. You will still always have the diseases, and you will always be a carrier if you are infected. Whether you like it or not. Whether you live in Europe or in Africa.
In fact, of those diseases listed in the link in the OP, only trichomoniasis and chlamydia can be cured - rest can't.
So his post, as the previous posts about "untreated STD" don't make any sense to me.
Also, the study in the OP does not make sense - there are INDIVIDUAL diseases in it, which have a higher prevalence rate than the total magic "25%" there. Just HPV is prevalent in more than 25% of females in the US.
What most people don't realise, is that most STD's and diseases aren't really anything special. It's only the nastier ones that are scary :P

And what's this about a cure for HIV? Last I heard, there wasn't even an effective treatment much less a cure.
edit: beat to it by 4 minutes...
Also, it's becoming clear why so many people get STDs, they know **** all about them.

You can still get Herpes Simplex Virus strain 1 from kissing them, which can in 10% of cases cause genital herpes (although it's usually caused by HSV-2).
But considering that 90% of people have it, you probably have it yourself already :P

Beating chest about how cool you are on a videogame forum is pretty stupid.
Also, I personally think that one good girl who you know for a long time is much better than 5 odd random partners :P
But anyhow. I too have HSV-1 (found out recently with a blood test). Funny thing is though, I do not remember ever having a single blister on my lip or in my nose.

Would you like some herpes with that? Sorry, couldn't resist
I agree with the rest though. Also, to find out about most of your carried diseases (not specifically STD's), all you have to do is a simple blood test once, and they should tell you everything that tests positive - they do it for free here, no idea how it is where you live.

Some agency wants more funding.
The survey is of just 838 participants! - and those participants would also have to be close to a facility to get the testing and or willing to travel to one. So - I am betting the survey was weighted more heavily or entirely around cities. In about 30 seconds, one can get the US census data and extrapolate it to current numbers. 838 surveyed teens 14-19 - out of an extrapolated 11.1 million females 15-19. That's 0.0075% of the population of just 15-19 year old girls not counting the 14 year olds. Yes they used "statistical techniques" but the survey is still way to small. Their "statisical" techniques would just as easily be extrapolated to every other 1st world country also.
The aim of politics is to keep the populace alarmed and clamorous to be saved by menacing it with imaginary hobgoblins. The urge to save humanity is a false front for the urge to rule it. |

Why is that a bad thing?
Its all game at the end of the day - Friends people I work with - hell even girls I know - its 1 big game to pull to add those tallys up to see who you can pull,
who pulled the best looking girl that night in what club & so on. The thril is walking out with the look on all those other lads faces who didnt pull what you did that night thats the fun in it. Who cares if it does not go any were? Its just abit of fun nothing else ;)
I can guarantee, il pull at least two tonight maybe more - more then likely take 1 or a group back to my mates house - have abit of fun - & wont even remember there names in 3 weeks time or what happened.
