ive installed the eve mon skill planner but i cant find any info on how to get the best out of it. anyone have any links

eve-mon isn't that hard.
pick a item/skill/ship you wanna fly and add it to your plan to get there
open eve-mon ->plans -> new
fill in a name -> use tabs to find your skill/mod/ship
click on the item and on the right side there should be a button which allows you to add the skills to plan
that's it

Actually, with the latest version it has become a lot cooler as it is now integrated with BattleClinic. Not that it wasn't made of win already :)
-> Pick a ship -> show loadouts -> Pick a fitting you like and add the skills to your plan.
This is saving me vast amounts of time :)
When you are happy with your plan, click 'make suggestions' and EVEmon will give tips on how to decrease total training time. It will suggest which learning skills you could train to speed up training if (time after learning + time need to learn learning < time before learning).
Now download EFT as well and you have EVEs' two best apps.

Well, the very first thing you want to do is add your character to Eve Mon using the LIMITED API link. After that it's really just a matter of deciding what your goals are.
I just started using EveMon last week. So, still learning about it myself. I find it to be a good "What If" type tool.
After getting your character added, you will want to go to the PLAN menu and create a New plan. Once inside the planner you will see the tabs for Plan queue, Skill Browser, Ship Browser, and Item Browser. This is a fantastic resource! As I am also new to EvE (1 month) I am really happy to be able to browse through all this information while off-line. (You know.... while I am busily working... at, uh, work) Anyway.
Point is, it's very informative so far as skill progression requirements, the time it will take, and all the pre-requisit skills you will need to get to your goals.
The ship browser is nice because you can pull up the stats on any ship, and by Control-clicking additional ships you can have side by side comparisons. This is a great help in deciding which ship you want to buy, or even which Piloting skills you want to learn. and judging whether it is worth it to pursue a particular class of ship. It also helps to give you a very real idea of just how long it will take you to get up to a certain level of play. Nothing like cold hard ISK and skill requirements to put a proper perspective on things.
The Item browser can be used in the same way, Control-click multiple items to do side by side comparisons. Also useful in comparing base pricing and volume of items if you are a trader/merchant type and are interesed determining what might generate the most profit per m3.
There is still a lot I don't know about EvEMon, but just those capabilities have mad me very happy I decided to download it.

Indeed... EFT only gives you "on paper" DPS/tanking figures. It completely ignores things like tracking and optimal range, and unless you mess around with the custom damage profiles it doesn't take into account what sorts of damage NPCs dish out or are weak to. Not to mention that, unless you actually know what you're picking from the lists, you can easily end up with a LOL-worthy fit full of ridiculously priced faction and named gear that no sensible person would ever use.
EFT is only an aid, unless you actually know firsthand what most of the stuff you're throwing on your hypothetical ship dpes, you can end up with an overpriced and awful fit that will make everyone laugh.

Exactly what it says it does.
It sets higher priority skills to be trained first. Obviously it will also move the priority skill's pre-requisites to the top of the list as well.

Be a little careful with this......99% of the fitouts are really bad. There's been very little effort in weeding out the poor configurations. Don't just blindly grab any old fitting. Try to choose one that has a title that suits your needs and then check to see the rating (i.e. what others think of it). Even then, be careful to check the fitout before trusting it.
