I've been curious about other people who have used EVE as their first MMO. I come from a long list of FPS (Unreal Tournament series, BioShock, Half Life Series, Mech Warrior, Doom series, Quake series, etc) I was in an Unreal Tournament clan, and probably have over 2000hrs logged for Unreal Tournament 2004.
I'm sure I'm not the only person around here with a similar history. For those that are the same, what are you finding yourself doing in EVE?
Me, I'm simply fascinated by everything. I got pulled into a corp a few days into the game. All these guys want to do is PvP and more PvP. Being in a FPS clan, I've kinda been preprogrammed to get your good "guns" before stepping into the area. But damn, I've been enjoying traveling all around the different galaxies, meeting people in local, discovering each race's stations & ships, finding new and interesting looking planets (found one planet that looks like it has an electrical storm on it), experimenting with different skills & implants, discovering the joys (and yawns) of mining, etc. And I've been playing around with manufacturing a few simple things to see what sells and how closely it relates the the market data. Just the other day, I discovered the joys of PoS and the craziness involved with it.
But what is slowly creeping up on me is the lack of true FPS control. I love the complexity of the game, but the "select this" and "push weapon of choice" and let the computer do the rest has been kinda bugging me lately. I miss having to use my actual mouse aiming skills. Here is also where I am curious about how the rest of the FPS background guys are handling it. So far, I've been playing for about 1.5 months.

A friend of mine pointed Eve out while he was on a trial account. I love flight sims, WIng Commander especialy. Eve was so similar to Privateer and Freeleancer that it sucked me right in. I was never into online gaming other than Halo 2 and a little Starcraft back in the day as I would consistently get my ass handed to me. When I get bored in one area I just move on to another.

Sad to say runescape was my first MMO, after that and several FPS(h1 h2 ghost recon etc...)came eve.
And I do wish we could control our ships the way you describe but it might add too much lag.

First and only MMO (unless you count free browser-based strategy games like Archmage and Utopia).
I'm very much into the combat side of the game, but Eve not being very FPS like is a huge plus for me. Also, I never had the notion that I had to get trained up and get into a good ship before I could actually fight. I wanted to get right into it from the beginning.

I played CS and DOD in CAL for a number of years, and now I pretty much only play EVE , my first MMO. I'll still load up COD4 or CS:S/DOD:s from time to time, but for the most part, I'd rather just play EVE instead

EVE is my first MMO. I too came from a lot of single player FPSs. I've been playing for over 4 years now, and I can't for the life of me figure out how I found out about this game. I had considered trying WoW, but it never appealed to me even though I had played WC 1 and 2. The 14 day trial is what won it for me. I remember downloading and being about 2 hours into the game when I went and activated. I'm still not sure if I go the 14 days for free or not!

Eve was my first MMO way back in 2003.
I have tried over 9 other "main line" MMOs since then, but none of them kept me entertained for longer than 2-6 months. Eve is the only "mistress" I have never truly left, and keep coming back to for more over and over again.
In my almost five years in Eve, I have done and seen about 90% of everything there is to do and see; at one time or another. However, Eve does still does hold many mysteries for me, even after all of my years "in pod". The biggest mystery about Eve, for me at least, HAS to be this: How can it be that the devs suck so badly at almost every patch deployment, and the "balance" kings go on wild Nerf binges almost every month it seems, yet keep the game so addictive that I keep coming back?
It HAS to be a labor of "love" on my part. That is the only word that explains how something can be so "bad" and so "good" at the same time.

I'll age myself a bit with this, but I have fond memories of BBS games like MajorMUD and Tele Arena. That was really my intro to MMOs. That, and the original Neverwinter Nights! Since then, I've gone through most of the major players, like Ultima Online, CoH/V, WoW, and a few others. Eve surprised me with its depth, and the way it made me think like no game before it. Its still doing it

I was brought into Eve by a friend of mine. Neither of us have done online gaming really, both of us were on a couple of MUSHes back in the 90's and we've done networked RTS.
My background is more RTS and roleplay games such as the World of Darkness games, especially the LARP version. The politics, the teamplay, the articles I've read about the scams and the thefts and the uncertainty of putting everything on the line, and trying to sa***uard everything....
Yeah, not so much FPS. Used to play Halo with some friends because that's what they got into, but my dyslexia and latent ambidexterity mucks my twitch responses.
To me, the game is getting more exciting as I have more to lose. I recently acquired this character from my friend as he departed the game, and the opportunities to get involved deeper in corporate affairs due to higher support skills has really opened my eyes as to the scope of risks taken. I may get bored in a year or two, or I may stick around for years. But it seems to be getting better for me as I get to be able to do more with higher skills.

It's sad that you list Mechwarrior as a FPS. That may be accurate now, but it used to be a mech sim.

Eve isn't an FPS at all, and it shouldn't have manual aiming.
Anyway, Eve is my first "real" MMO. I played MUDS all the time back in the day, I played that online RPG on the Sierra Online thing (Imagination Network or something like that), and I played Guild Wars. But never WoW, Everquest, Ultima Online, etc.

My first online game was quake 2. Thou, I didn't really get into online games until around the time I tried a mod for quake 2 called gloom. Man, talk about good old memories of it. In matter of fact, people still play the game time to time and it also inspired mods such as Natural Selection for half-life. Eventually I made a switch to Diablo, then diablo 2. After that went into day of defeat. after year of playing that. I got into battle field 2. Which, around 6 months I went to "wow"(yes, I know...) and Dawn of War with my clan mates from bf2. After a good year of playing WoW, I stop and went to a Online game which always wanted to try:eve online. Since then, I been playing since.

- dark age of camelot, since 2001 first on US, later euro. in total almost 5 years. - city of heroes/villains on and off since the start, US first, later euro. - EQ2 since the start but gave up after a month, boredom and groupdebt drove me away. Now it's a nice MMO. - WOW ofcourse, since the start on Euro on and off (on atm). - Vanguard, for 5 days - EVE since a while, have been on and off as well, restarted few times. - tons of other MMO's I forget about because they were either crap or not to my liking.

Apart from that ... DAoC (got to level 50 and then pretty much gave up), City Of Heroes (great initial fun, lacks longevity), Ultima Online (played many, many years ago and never really understood what I was supposed to be doing, so gave up).
I keep coming back to Eve becasue there's so much you can do. So many sub careers. If I'm bored doing one thing, I'll skill up and do another.

am I the only one who's never played a fantasy MMO?
I don't know, I guess i've always been allergic to the whole magical elves thing.
First MMO had to have been Darkspace. God I miss that game, but it was pretty much ruined when the devs went and nerfed pretty much all the fun things out of it till all the races were the same and it took an Interdictor to kill ANYONE
Then I played Mankind... which IMO was an amazing concept (harsh universe / no 'PvE' whatsoever) where you could build a galactic empire type thing and squish other galactic empires. That got ruined by the devs not even knowing the basics of server maitinence, and not having backed up the database for six months when a crash happened. Fun...
Then EVE came out. ...

EVE was my first MMO, been playing it since 05. However, Since trying out a different game (in nov 07) I am finding it increasingly hard to class EVE as my #1 game choice now :(
I cannot afford to pay for 2 mmo's (well I could but dont see the point), I play EVE for free now, or at least untill my funds for timecards run dry :(
I never PVP'd in eve cos 1) I suck at it, 2) It's too expensive to build a ship up with all my hard earned isk only to be ganked a few gates into lo-sec.

I played BF2 mostly and then moved on to Project Reality afterwards.
My friend passed me a 14 day trail of Eve right around Revelations. I tried it and totally fell in love with the setting mostly, I love space and always dreamed of flying ships.
The graphics were great and it was different from the strictly fantasy settings of DOAC and WOW.
I been playing for roughly a year now, and there is still so much to do and see. It's consistently the game I keep going back to even though I recently bought a PC that let me play Crysis and other games at full settings... however they just don't have the holding power of Eve.
I believe alot of that has to do with its unique space setting, sandbox play style and recurring updates over time. Something other fanatasy style MMOs really lack.

This is my first MMO, been around about 5 months now. I come from the ubiquitous FPS background and, more importantly, driving sim games like Grand Prix Legends and Nascar 2003 (where I used to race in leagues).
Eve is a nice contrast from the reflex actions required to do the other games. It requires thought and combat is still fun even if it's really a point-and-click exercise. Lag issues with loads of players mean it can never be as "FPS-like" as something like X-Wing vs Tie Fighter. For that you'd need a massive pipe and pings less than 100ms to play properly. MMOs just aren't built that way.

This is bothering you because you're a 'twitch' gamer. Especially coming from your long line of FPS games. EVE is more of a strategy and fitting game. The gang that has the better group setup will generally win. Unless it's fleet, and then it's just who can bring more caps.

First MMO was Asheron;s call. After level 9 or 10 I kept dying and losing stuff and becoming weaker and weaker. I could not figure out why someone would pley this game.
Then a friend introduced me to DAOC, just after the SI expantion, wow playing with people is fun. Leveled a toon on Mordred to level 45. By that time radar had become so prevelent that you were getting ganked by roaming groups everywhere. Moved to a blue server. Played... for a long time.
Tried EvE, interesting.. maybe later.
Tried City of heroes leveled a FOTM Fire/Device blaster. Too repetitive. Back to DAOC, plyed a little while. Started a hunter on WoW, played for 6 months. Back to DAOC. This lasted 6 months. I cancelled my subscription for the last time.
After some coaxing I went back to WoW where I curently have a couple of 70's and 60+.
Started EvE, paid account (Still playing WoW). 6 months in a really good corp but I didn;t have the skills nor the money. Lost a ship and got podded while trying to reach 0.0. 75 million ISK down the drain, 15 million in account. I was not happy. Closed account
Back to WoW full time got in a good guild, doing raids and playing with a great bunch of people.
Some friends of mine wanted to try EvE, so I'm showing them the mechanics. So far they like it. They have just touched the surface
EvE is not easy, but it;s so much more than a hack and slash.
Friend: "Hey what's the guy with the skull mean?" Me: " He has a bounty on his head" Friend: "Can we shoot him and get the bounty?" Me: "you see all the people comming out of the station?" Friend: "Yes" Me: "You should ask yourself, Why are they not shooting at him!" (At this point I really wanted them to feel the wrath of Concord but I know the money would have come out of my pocket :-) but still it was just a crappy frigate

I was always heavily into console games and have just about every console ever made. I never really thought about 'PC' games until very recently like Jan of '08.
I knew lots of people who played MMO's but i was always more into FPS and sim type games, that was until I was until i Googled 'MMO' and was given a list of all the most popular types, Wow being the most famous.
I looked at eve and within 15mins downloaded the trial and head out into the stars. Its my first MMO and I love it, im hooked and spend many hours mining, trading and that sort of thing.
It looked complicated from the outside but once you start you soon get the hang of things. Plus the help from other players in game is just amazing, your all so friendly and willing to help, and within 2 months ive established my own haulage corp, can fly a BS and a whole host of industrials and soon an Obelisk!
I cant imagine playing any other MMO!

Eve was my first MMO. Didn't really know much about them back then, but saw an add for Eve and it appealed to me, so soon as I left home and got me a credit card (because my parents would never let me use theirs not in a million years), I signed up for eve and have been here just about ever since (2.5 years now).
I have tried other MMO's; They have shiny graphics, better interfaces, more interesting missions/quests/adventures. But none of them stand up in terms of being able to provide more than just "grind, collect stuff, improve character" cycle. Eve has really long term player driven goals to achieve beyond just having the best character/stuff
I come from FPS, half-life/cs etc world too and the lack of proper "aiming" concerned me too. But actually eventually came to realise that pvp had enough variables, albiet a different set of them to make it interesting. (Modules/setup, team organisation, intel on enemy in Eve vs. reflex, accuracy and spatial awareness in an fps. In counterstrike, not much difference between AK47 and M4A1, but in Eve there is a world of difference between say falcon and rapier)

Though I guess I played an 'online' game even before that when we all just had modems logging into ether nodes and BBS games. That was before the internet, god I just made myself feel old lol.
Then of course came UO (ultima online) - dreadlords ftw, where we invented the term 'carebears' ;p

EVE actually was my first MMO as I joined in in beta. I did like it but some friends had started playing DAoC so I went there. I do sometimes regret that but I had some great fun playing other MMO's before I came back to EVE.

My fist MMO was Planetside (New Conglomerate > all ) which I still think was one of the best FPS experiences I ever had (200 man battles over 500m anyone?). Also played Black Hawk Down and Counter Strike and then progressed onto Joint Ops and Source. Started playing BF2 in 2005 and Project Reality from the .4 version and I still play them both now. Have been dabbling in RTS through all of this period but not enough to join any clans ect. Started to play WoW late last year as the rest of my BF2 clan played it. Stopped that because it was boring and my clan seemed to be bunch of a*ses when on WoW. When downloading the demo for a game I noticed a 14 day trial for Eve and I thought I'd give it a go and I'm still here

much like the OP, i've played just every FPS ya can think of out there, quake, tribes, UT, CS, RB6, GR, AA:O. also played some RTS's like red alert and C+C. eve would be the first MMO i got into, beta'd aseron's call, matrix online and auto assault. but eve sucked me in hardcore, going on 3 and a half years now

Eve was my first MMO as well. I had used 3 trial account over a year before I felt the game was worthy of my money.
Im very much into Counter-strike, quake and UT. CS:S is very demanding and stressful when your in one of the top teams in the country so Eve is a very nice game to play when you just want to relax and take a break.
I now have 2 characters, both industrialists turned PvPers.

EVE is my first real MMO... played Freelancer to pass the time back when I was playing in the FPS leagues on teamwarfare.com, but never was interested in the MMO genre until a few coworkers wouldn't shut up about this game and I checked it out (ZOMG NO WIZARDS!!1)
Been hooked for nearly two years now ------------

The Realm Online (hooray for 1996 throwbacks!), Planetside and more MUDs than I wish to remember.
For some reaons, I grow tired of pure PvE MMOs long before they come out of beta - and I've been in far too many of those

Yup, first one. I played Warcraft 2 and Battlefield 1942 for a few days each, not real MMOs, just get all my buddies to same game server or host my own. Didn't last long. The closest thing to an space MMO I played before Eve was VGA Planets centuries ago (good ol' BBS times)
I regret I didn't hear about this game when it was released. I would be flying Titans or maybe a Veldonough if so.

Eve was my first real MMO.. I had played a great Lovecraft MUSH for about 1.5 years, but then hit holy omgwtf burnout and wanted something as unlike that game as possible.
Hence, Eve. I took a break during the summer and tried City of Villains, it's cute and all; but when I came to fully understand what people mean when they say "Grind", I ran back to Eve as fast as I could.. Realtime skill advancement ftw. --------------

First and only.
I did the free trail of WoW to see what all the fuss was about, but thought it was just silly.
Since I started playing the only other game thats held my interest was Portal.

Edited by: Vasq on 18/03/2008 14:27:53 Eve was my 1st MMO, after playin FPS like avp2, Half Life, rainbow 6, doom and UT. i saw it reviwed in a mag back in 2003 and as i'd loved elite and eliteII so i thought i'd give it a go. i have played a few mmo since (when i get bored of eve) Guild wars and LOTRO but i get bored after a few months and come back to eve. i do wonder if the main reason i never actually cancell the account is that u can train with out being online. A master stroke by CCP!

Vasq!
Anyway
I had never heard of eve-online until someone directed me to a webpage saying that the game looked interesting. I agreed and registered for beta testing...about 6 months later when I had forgotten about it I received a beta invite and I'm still here . |

I've played virtually every MMO thats been released since (and including) Ultima Online.
I was a hardcore end-game raider in Everquest, and almost as hardcore in EQ2.
I've beta'd 4 different mainstream MMOs.
Shortest stint in an MMO: Anarchy Online; it was so bugged on release that it was pretty much unplayable. Vanguard gets an honorable mention too (yawnfest much??)
Outside of MMOs; I am a hardcore Final Fantasy fan, I enjoy most mainstream FPS that come out (I'm currently playing through HL2, again). Before MMOs I considered myself an RTS player (Starcraft 4eva~!)

Eve is my first and only MMO unless you count Baron's Realm Elite via BBS on a 14400 modem. Then came Doom II, Wing Commander 3+, Starcraft, and TFC. These days I mostly just play Eve and Team Fortress 2. I'm still missing a good space sim that uses a joystick.

Introduced to EVE by my son and former husband a year and a half ago. I've never even looked at another mmo but wouldn't miss a day on EVE unless it was unavoidable (those darn extended dt's)!!
