So I'm sitting here, cruising around looking for mission runners to kill and I got to thinking: there are three main combat environments in Eve, not counting deadspace. 0.0, low-sec and empire. Each one has it's unique factors that make it different: 0.0 has bubbles, no gate guns, nano ships and cruisers/frigs are dominant, cap ships everywhere. Low sec has gate guns, BC/CS/BS are more predominant, cap ships drop all the time. High sec doesn't have gate guns, so I guess nano ships are more common than in low sec, but WOOHOO, no cap ships!
I'm getting sick of cap ship warfare. That small roaming gang of 3x CS and 4x inties? Cap ship hot drop written allllll over it.
On top of not having cap ships in empire warfare, there is also the bonus of being able to do what 'antipirates' do to me all the time: jump in when I want, where I want, and have the gate guns on MY side, and able to use all my drones and even smaller ships like inties and cruisers at a gate. I mean, it's just SOOO EASY. It's very tempting.
And this made me rethink my whole concept of piracy: really at this point, anyone flying into low sec is obviously consenting to PVP. I mean, HELLO? The game even gives you a warning dialogue when you do it the first time! So if *everyone* in low sec obviously knows that they could encounter PVP, then it's all 100% consensual, and that's not very piraty, it's just PVP. And let's be real here folks, being -10 really isn't that much of a bother.
Enter high sec ganking. IMO this is the 'most piraty' of game play at the moment. The targets are players who go to *great* lengths to avoid any sort of PVP. Just my favorite type of player to annoy. Killing in high sec clearly isn't 'allowed' by CONCORD, so I get this feeling of being a shark, swimming amongst a school of fish looking for that one ripe juicy target. It's thrilling to chase a hauler for 19 jumps and finally get the kill. But I digress.
So I'm torn. Empire wars and busting up low sec gate camps? Or stick with being an outlaw? I'd like some input from players who do a lot of empire wars, as to how things are with respect to having to deal with nano ships and the like. I'm very tempted to rat my sec up. It's a dark day indeed.

Nano-cruisers are not as common in Empire as in 0.0. They are viable, though, as you don't have to contend with gate guns. Intys and other small stuff with points for catching stuff that warps fast are quite common as well. Honestly, I see no reason to limit myself to low-sec 0.0 by killing my sec status. I can go pirate stuff on the side if I like, and it's a hell of a lot easier to find targets when you've got a positive sec status. Also, suicide ganking is a fantastic game mechanic.

Some addendum:
I was just running the numbers for some ship setups, but allowing for the fact that I wouldn't have to be tanking the 300+ DPS from gate guns, and the fact that I'd have an additional 300 DPS or so by being able to use my own drones. Wow, what a difference. Sooo tempting.

Empire piracy CAN be fun, but just know that actually finding targets in empire is HARD, even with wardeccing.
Most "carebears" in highsec tends to stay docked for long periods of time if you get anywhere near their system (believe me, even some of the PVP-corps do this)
I'd suggest either getting a LOT of wardecs going, or simply join something like RvB, atleast you get your moneys worth of PvP then.
Just a suggestion...

Raise your sec-up.
where is the fun beeing an outlaw all time? Hard supply to replace lost ships, targeted all time, blob all time.
For me a high sec status is just a buffer for attacking who i want when i want. It's not that bad beeing considered like a noob carebear
And sorry for my bad spelling :)

Took back my sec went into high sec and i can say it took me 2 months then i was back to -10 again.
Tried diffrent things like ganking mission runners, suicide haulers and frigs/shuttles, MERC and hell even can flipping.
Just wasnt the same thrill as -10 the constant not knowing if its bait or if one will come out ontop. And just the feeling of wanting to shoot the Sh*t out of people.
Sure its a hassle and i feel lowsec doesnt get any love from CCP but in the end its where i belong and call home.

Not so much hard as it is boring, but not too hard. If I hadn't given up at -4.7 last month and gone back to -10 I'd be in empire today. And that'd be bad... for some people ------------

Is the time for THE question of being a pirate ?
Still worth it or not.
Like others, i tryed t get my ss up. You go in empire ,its unf looking at "new" thing you forgot since ages, can fit your ship easy, can war deck people... Then a few after you come back in low sec, check for a nice target (auto-piloting cormorant ftw) , decide to blow it up for the fun. And here you go, do it an other time , blow people.. Bellum, i'd say yeah , try it, you may find good things to do and also can get pretty loot when griefing chinese farmers. But if you always been pirating, i think you'll be p**ed off quickly. Pirating isnt what it used to be long time ago. Game is moving to a different way for us. Pirate will have a hard job in low sec.

Corporate piracy is on the rise.
You set up shop, scope out a target and effectuate the war dec. Once you've made an impression, you make your demands for a possible settlement that will end the hostilities.
Worst case, your victims turtle up - and every hour you impose your game on them is another hour of that could've been spent churning isk. Believe me, paying the man becomes an option sooner than later - and while you wait, you can prepare for your next target.
Best case, your victim joins an alliance and/or hire some help, which means pew-pew a-plenty in an environment where you don't have to worry about capital hot drops and having sentries against you - not to mention the everpresent 3rd party blob that always manages to drop in on an otherwize nice engagement.
The No Fear Buccaneers used to thrive on hunting in losec, fighting whatever we could get away with - consentual or not. Not too long ago, we found ourselves at an impass where we had to choose between 'sticking to the code' and slowly dying with the old notions of piracy, or adapting to the new circumstances - reinvent our chosen profession in the environment where our former targets thrived - and needless to say, we chose the latter.
Looking back, the change has not been an easy one, as much as a necessary one. But I'm happy to say that we thrive these days. Activity is on the rise, money's flowing in through more and more interesting avenues, and in spite of the monotony of killing afk miners and haulers, you'd be surprised how often you can actually find a real fight. CCP - and ironically, the constant moaning of carebears asking for newer and safer means of transportation and earning money - has paved the way for a new generation of villains applying their trade in the backwaters of industrial conglomerates and trade cartels.
So we've changed from the old ways. We now wear fine suits and serve you bright smiles, while we shake your hand - before chewing it off at the shoulder.
It's all good.

'greed!
That's the way to go... There are alliances like the privateers that war dec on anything big enough to shake a stick at. That's one way of doing it.
If you want more control and want to make tons of money while you do the trick is to get into a relatively small corp. (Usually a pseudo/sister corp to a larger one) and use it to war dec your targets.
Using a smaller corp 10-30 people and war decing specific targets usually helps with the turtling issue. If you keep your numbers low then the corp you dec generally won't consider you a threat and that's where the money is made.
But it's exactly like Atreides said, do a bit of research so your not blasting boring targets. Take a look at sovereignty and find a relatively peaceful slice of 0.0. Then go to the low sec->0.0 systems and let an alt just sit there and watch what goes in and out of the gate. Find yourself a good target (I like mining corps) and blast away. Sometimes you get lucky and a whole alliance will war dec you. More targets!
It's usually best to split into a couple of camps, some for high sec and some for low. That and keep switching it up. Alliances and lots of 0.0 corps are really slow. They assume you'll be in the same place every night. You can use that to your advantage or move the camp around from place to place. All the while you're alt's in another low sec->0.0 watching some other corps. |

Eh, with the first advent of Priva*****s a while back Empire peeeps hadnt a clue for the most part. A lot of people have since learned, a few months of that edumacated folks. Those who havent arent worth bothering for the most part, though you will get the occaisonal idiot Tranport pilot, assuming you have the smarts and rescources to take it down.
About the only ones who'll lose any money to Empire pratting are small n00bish corps and dumbasses. More n00bs, fewer dumbasses than there used to be.
Any rich Corp with half a clue will just JC out to 0.0 and mine Ark for a week or two.
Also, wherever you gank at a gate in Empire, expect random people to swarm any can appearing. I (and a lot of other people) made a few real nice additions to my assets by doing this to Privs back in the day. Sure they had plenty of targets in Jita and Rens, but the 4 billion noobs who swarmed the wrecks and tried to follow them everywhere they went was pretty funny.
Oh yeah, expect to spend a LOT of time sitting outside of stations.
Regardless, knock yourself out. The more misery you and people like you spread around in LowSec and High-Sec the better off my long term goals are. *shrugs*

Going back to hisec would be more of an option for me if it weren't for all the damn loot vultures. At least in lowsec if someone goes for my loot they get blasted.
Plus it just feels weird flying through hisec, seeing all those neutrals, yet not being able to shoost them! I've accidentally targeted people (out of habit) with my hisec alt.
The cap dropping is definitely a growing problem though. There's a particular alliance that we barely engage anymore because they fit cynos on all their ships.

And here is the foundation of the problem. They really go to great lenghts to avoid any sort of pvp, and luckily for them eve online provides millions of ways.
Tried out wars, its boring. You have a big red/white star drawn on your head as a warning, concord sends the targets email explaining them when will you start hunting them, and after first day of two of kills (either because they are still not aware of whats happening or because they still have hope of putting up a fight, which if you are succesful they figure out wont work) it gets boring, you just end up going back to low sec and ruining your hard earned sec status.

I've been doing Empire wars on this character for almost 2 years. I like it mainly because there's no sec hits, so no working on sec status every so often, availability to restock/resupply yourself, locator agents aplenty to find your targets, you can run missions to grind ISK when/if needed and there are lots of people to chose as targets.
One other factor I particularly enjoy is the fact that a lot of the wars are a bit more personal. Meaning say you run into some smack talking idiots in a 50 man corp, and you decide to dec them. Those kills are among the best to me. Sure catching random targets on gates, in plexes or in belts is fun, no doubt.
Yet, to me, there is nothing better than someone making themselves a target to you, you dec them, then travel a few jumps and pop them when they least expect it. I love getting them just as they jump back to their mission agent after spending an hour to loot and salvage a level 4 mission. All that hard work for nothing. I love the constant, "WHY WHY WHY WHY!!!???!??!?!" emails after those kills.
People expect to be somewhat safe in Empire. People don't realize the consequences of their actions. I love to be the one to show them how unsafe they really are and exactly what kind of suffering is in store for them as a result of their actions.
Even if it's people who are random targets, they're quite fun too. You can get decs from their friends or mercs presenting you with more targets.
I mean I have several characters on several accounts. Some in 0.0, some in Empire. For me, I just prefer Empire wars. For me it's the best of all worlds. No sec loss, constant targets, easy shopping, you pick your targets, you can make it personal and really repeatedly ruin someones day. It's great. When it gets slow and all your targets aren't around you can grind a few missions, make some ISK and build a bit of sec status, or you can hit up low sec and do some killing, or take a jaunt out to 0.0 and goof off.
It's not for everyone. It's all about what you make it.

I tried this a few months ago. Grinded up from -10, remained at -1.9. I had some good fun busting up gate camps, doing empire wars, can-baiting (got some nice fights, BS v BS) and all kinds of other high-sec hi-jinks, was fun. The advantage of the gate-guns on your side is quite nice and suddenly logistics are much easier.
Then I started gatecamping again and nailed in 100 kills in 2 days and remembered why I like being -10.

I had that happen to me once.......was horrible.......soo many neutrals...and not being allowed to shoot them. And with the high sec status you lose the fear factor effect you get with being -10. Edited by: Stakhanov on 19/03/2008 05:52:27 The very concept of my corporation revolves around -10 , and I couldn't see myself ever move away from this. Indiscriminate killing is a vital part of my Eve life , it's so depressing to scan in highsec and see countless ships mostly safe from any harm.
However there is the temptation to train for a suicide ganker alt. Best of both worlds ? That would fit the corp goals in a way... killing both juicy haulers and farmers that way.
But ratting my sec up ? I can keep probing over and over , camp for hours on end and kill hundreds of cloned farmers , but I lost the habit of even shooting red crosses. It just doesn't feel right... feeling sec loss as a punishment would be too sickening.

Bellum, while I agree to the main points of your post, high-sec -seems- ideal for pirating.
However, while in 0.0 or low-sec you can basically hang around your few systems or pipe and wait for kills to come to you and occasionally fly out further to find fun kills - in high-sec you have to:
* constantly move around to find your wartargets * you have to camp them into stations * you have to sit around and listen to endless smack * you have to see them switch corporations to get away from your wars. * you have to watch them undock in shuttles and frigs * you have to hear them say how their CEO has said they are not to, under any circumstances, fight you.
All these above points are beyond my patience, I don't want to spend a week in empire waiting for the occasional noob who doesn't know what a war is undock, I want good fights and so far I have never seen good fights in high-sec - My corp has decced alliances with more than 400 people in them in the past and none has even made an effort to gather a team of 10 ppl to come take us out.
But if it is only for griefing and making people miserable, yeah high-sec wars is the way to go.

We have a ton of fun PVPing in low sec and are extremly successful. Our killboards are constantly stacked and we live in a very fast paced heavy target riched alliance pipeline. I enjoy the fact we dont have to worry about nano gangs, blobbing, pos warfare, and 0.0 lagfests. Every once in awhile a big alliance will run through but thats extremly uncommon. All in all pirating has been a great experience for me and anyone who joins our corp. We had a pilot i recruited a week ago first day 28 kills! Low sec IMO if placed in the right area is awesome and anyone who is serious about PVP needs to try it.

other than the thing about wars, that's what we have in lowsec too
Posts like this is from people who never pirated before....
LOL. Your cred just shrank to, um, zero.
BTW, you make your area of low sec sound spectacular... we'll be RIGHT OVER. /me goes to check DL killboards...

Yeah, come over Bell, it'll give us something to do :P
I really miss empire wars, the privateer days were awesome. Undock, and 10minutes later i'm pew pew'ing stuff.
Have you seen that Red vs Blue thing? If I had the time to play, i'd be more than tempted to clean my sec and join that, it looks like a blast!

Originally by: Nexa Necis I've been doing Empire wars on this character for almost 2 years.
Ppl like you used to scare me when i was a wee lil noob. but after a while i tasted the dark side and i can see it addiciton lol. but am a nice person so i dont mess with care bears.I have been in 0.0 didnt like it just a constant cycle of blob or get blobbed : P. and stupid capitals dropping in sucked. maybe cuz i was staying in BOB territory lol.

I put the only char I have left with any combat value that can go into (most) highsec into rvb, and honestly I was unimpressed. I was hoping for some sort of feeding-frenzy gank orgy, what I got was station hugging and blobbing. I'll admit I didn't stick with it for long, probably didn't give rvb the chance it deserved, but I was having more fun smashing things in low sec.
Put an alt in first and see if it's worth it you to get your sec up for

bellum we are thinking of going -10 since we never have. so i cant offer a great comparison. what i can tell you though is that high sec pvp is not great. maybe lots of isk to be made? through ganking i guess... but ive been in several wars and every time it was extremely boring. the only thing close to a legit fight happens on a station after both corps have spent 5 hours sizing up their chances. and then once it happens half the ships on losing side just drop agro and dock.
if you are sick of getting targeted specifically i would just say increase your mobility. my corp keeps sec up so we can switch regions daily and use market systems. we engage lots of different folks but we dont get hunted as specifically as you do. i strongly believe the most fun pvp for me is in low sec, regardless of what sec status i have, low sec seems to be where the best action is.
ide love to talk more stop by my pub channel some time(club bear) =)

Thanks for the tip, the only alt tht's ven worthy of pvp is my suicide gank alt, so can't get into 0.7+ anymore. And tbh, he has no support skills :p
I don't have the time to grind my sec up :*(
