So I am getting a little annoyed with running kill missions lately and wanted to try something new; I happen to work for Astral Mining so I have some great quality lv. 4 mining agents available, but I wanted to find out what I was getting into before I tried it.
How is the ISK / hour vs kill missions?
Are there rats?
Do I need specific mineral mining skills (given that all the ore is special mission ore)?
How long does an average mission take?
How much cargo space will I need on average?
I appreciate any advice from anyone familiar with lv. 4 mining missions.

In 0.8 and lower space, mining lasers attract rats. Be prepared for them.
Mining lasers (generally) don't care about ore types. Just boost up your mining skills. (Mining, Astrogeology, Mining Upgrades) (Ice harvesting and Gas Harvesting are optional, but will come up now and then)
Tech 2 strip miners require crystals. Crystals require the specific ore Processing skill at 3. (4 for T2 crystals)
For casual mining, just grab the best mining lasers that you can throw on your cruiser/BS and kick back with a swarm of drones around you. (or go in with something able to kick *** and kill everything first, then go mine)
Remember: Mining lasers attract rats, even in mission deadspace.
Cargo space....it's often best to fit 2 ships. 1 for max yield mining, and 1 max space hauler. Since you're in a mission deadspace, it's a little harder to probe/scan you down. (Although last I heard, drones still show up well on a probe)
Mining missions shouldn't tax you too much, but it's better to be prepared for problems, even if nothing happens. _______________________________

ISK/hour afaik isn't as good as either regular mining or kill missions. As for rats, there are rats from the same security level as would normally be found in that section of space - aka, none in .9 and 1.0, frigs in .5 to .8, frigs, cruisers, and BC's, in .1 to .4, and whatever normally spawns in your local section of 0.0. If you are mining in 0.0 though for standing with one of the pirate factions, use a hulk setup to tank and have a nice friendly ratter sitting next to you but not in fleet so that way you don't get the sec status hit.

I'm running a Q16 lvl 4 mining agent in high sec and it nets me about 3-5 million per hour.
each mission takes between 30-45 minutes (for the ore ones), 15-30 minutes for the ice thats with a maxed out hulk and T2 mining drones.(and the ability to use T2 modulated strips with every type of crystal)
Most mining missions require you to mine in the region of 45,000m3 so generally takes two trips to clear the ore u need. However u do get ice mining and gas cloud mining missions as well as the odd lvl 4 combat mission so theres a wide range of skills needed.
To be honest I only do it because the LP store gives some decent stuff that the usual command agent lp stores dont (e.g 5 run caldari navy BCU bpc).

One caveat no one has mentioned:
Some of the mining missions are a source of the new drone parts for drone upgrades. Incidentally these drones are nasty (the sentient series). No BPC's so far but I am getting a nice collections of parts.
