Just installed one, got 100 iron charges and set off to try this out on a training drone.
I never got closer than 523 meters to the drone and after firing 80 rounds did not score a single hit.
Either this ammo / gun is no use for something as small as a drone or im very poor at shooting, or I am doing something stupid!!
Help :)

Hello,
I an not a full blown fighter all knowledgable in weapons, but I love my 150 mm Railgun!
You are using the right ammo I prefe rto use Lead or Iron, but what is the problem is that you are closing on your enemy. This weapon is a distance fighter, 12-18 km. For close in fighting you probably want to use lasers or something (I try not to let my enemy get that close). Anti matter rounds do the most dmaage, but you have to let the enemy get in close or else you cant hit anything.
I hope this helps.

Any gun hits best at its optimal range. You can find your guns optimal range by rightclicking on it, choosing show info, then lookint at the attributes tab.
Different types of ammo modify your optimal range from -50% to +50%, some types modify cap usage per shot too. After you have loaded ammo, you should check the modified optimal range. Try to orbit or keep range corresponding to the guns optimal. You will see a huge difference :) ----------------------

When you right click your gun in space it will show info. Showing info after its mounted and loaded is useful. If you look at the "attributes" there were two stats relevant to this "optimal range" "tracking speed/accuracy"
People tend to fight at "optimal range" because guns with large optimal ranges tned to have low "tracking speed" and vice versa.
What happened in this case is you were orbiting to fast around a nearly stationary target for the tracking speed of your gun.
If you ever shot anything in any FPS(first person shooter) or real life. Youll note that things moving far away at full speed still only require slight adjustments to your aim as they run. That in this game is a "low tracking speed" When your in close and hoping around in real life or in a FPS full speed movements require huge aim adjustments. In this game thats a "high tracking speed"
Unique to this situation in this game is that the guns aim themselves. They have a set speed for how fast they can adjust to the target. If your in tight you might very well be having the target move around such that your gun cant track fast enough. Thats what happened here =)
You can use guns inside without penalty if they can track. Its a myth that was dispelled that guns inside their optimum range do reduced damage/hit. If you take out tracking as a factor they hit just fine.

As an addition to what everyone else is saying, I'll add that there are two different types of hybrid weapons: Railguns and blasters. Railguns are distance weapons, while blasters are for close in work. Blasters typically deliver about twice the damage of railguns for the same power consumption, but they have very short ranges.
If you want to fight something 500m away, get yourself a light ion blaster (which is roughly comparable to a 150mm railgun in power consumption) and go to town. You'll love it!

It's all so much easier when you know a little bit about what you are doing :)

Welcome to Eve! I've been playing since July and I keep telling myself "it'll get so much easier once I know what I'm doing..."
