So, eve is great and all, but looking at the MMO market atm and seeing a lot of room for diversification and niche games and not many companies willing to fill that. Perhaps I'm just not looking hard enough but here are some games I'd like to play:
Homeworld Online: Too similar to Eve maybe? I'm sure a lot of people would love to play out the classic RTS in an MMO setting. Lots of issues though. What speed / pace to the game, how to limit people's fleet sizes, what happens to you when your fleet dies, what happens when you log off your whole fleet?
Industry Sim: Maybe stretches the word "massive" but could imagine a game where you have lots of servers with 50 or 100 odd people playing as rival businesses, creating factories, transport networks, shops and so on
Ship's Crew: Rather than each having your own ship, you simply join the crew on board an existing ship. Work together with shipmates to build up and customise said ship and when battle comes, man the guns or jump in a fighter.
Ofc. being a budding computer science undergrad, these aren't the only ideas I've had, but keeping the best for my own evil plans

Edited by: Akita T on 20/03/2008 14:16:44 Sins of a Solar Empire Online Persistant game server, MUCH slower game speed, MUCH higher hitpoint count on all ships, MUGH higher science research costs, some science "maintenance" costs too, open-ended "command points" research count, several thousands of star systems, no NPC-sell/buy metal/crystal orders, revamped "diplomacy" page. Whenever you go offline, everything keeps on going as it used to, as if you're still online but giving no orders. P.S. Nerf Dark Armada, boost PIJs

Um. I think Homeworld actually has a rich enough story to not rely on being a MM RTS. I'd definitely go for that one because the design Relic came up with for the HW series is pretty rawr.

HomeWorld 2 is nothing but pure win. I played a game last night, actually. I agree with this mans post. Has a fun story, get to build a lot of ships and see lots of boom.
Nothing like finally getting to build a Battle Cruiser and watching it mow down your enemies mothership.

Actually, the new developers of Star Trek Online are said to be going down this route. (That is, unless the article I read that was posted here a few weeks ago was a lie). Basically you all work on one ship and do away missions. The highest rank you can attain is Lieutenant Commander I think.
It sounds pretty crap actually. I'd rather just run around phasering people in the face. Or beaming them into walls or the inky blackness of space and watching them asphyxiate on the Bridge's viewscreen. But that's just me.

As a hobby I am working on something like the last one.
However it isn't space ships or Ocean ships, it's more like gargantuan tanks a km or so long. Bit post apocalyptic and the idea takes a few notes from the book Mortal Engines I read a few years back.... I remember it has cities reverse engineared for propulsion, London being the main one.
