What's next for eve? And more importantly what can be next?
Eve is crowded. CCP say they want more people in 0.0 or low sec but where will you put them? Already the fights happening there for the last few years are nearly unplayable if the numbers get too large.
Eve needs more space. Needs to expand. The sandbox has got too small. But how can that be done? If you look at the current map. If you were to put more 0.0 regions on the borders of the present ones that would push them further and further from empire space, so imagine 10 jumps with a carrier or rorqual to get in supplies.
Where can new space be added to the way that eves map is currently shaped?

Well, perhaps if the map was tweaked to be more easily understood (see, comprehensible) in the "unflattened" mode, we could expand out above and below the map itself. EVE isn't a full galaxy, as far as I can tell from backstory, only a localized cluster in what very well could still be the milky way. I see no reason, other than map issues, that more low-sec and 0.0 couldn't be added in above and blow what exists now. ------------------------------------------------- "In a closed society where everybody's guilty, the only crime is getting caught. youd have to make it another layer on top of the existing one. which would be too cluttered and incomprehensible in flat mode, and 3d mode well bleh who uses that?

The map's readability would definitely need to be increased then for sure. I'm all for adding stuff on the Z-axis but that will make flattened map reading that much harder, and right now the unflattened version kinda sucks. We need to be able to selectively toggle what regions we want displayed on the map, instead of just toggling what color they are, what adjoining regions' names are, and the like. Eliminate some of the clutter since some regions apparently right next to each other don't actually connect with any jump routes. Please visit your user settings to re-enable images. |

Ambulation->Planetary Interaction is where it's going. Read more.
Ambulation won't add more systems, but it will add "space". Planetary interaction in it's first theorized or proposed stage won't add space as such but the second (and third?) phases certainly will.

And if you don't care to play sims in a station?
I've always thought that a highsec/lowsec cluster out past 0.0 would be good for a laugh. It'd have no starter station systems and no security status higher than say 0.6. Make it far enough that you'd have to cyno at least twice across to it and give it enough entry/exit points and routes to get to it as to not get completely locked down by gate camps. ------------

Some new regions would be cool...they could put it in the storyline about newly discovered systems...also...they should also fix lag in 0.0 fleet battles...they're so annoying, the other night I was lagging so bad, I couldn't even lock the primaries before they popped... :(

I was actually to getting to this opinion until I started to play the stealth bomber again after it being vamped.
I am really enjoying playing this little gem ... its like old school eve tactical gameplay and skilled flying all roled into one.
Its a must and an absolute winner. Damn i want some of them bomb BPO's (any ideas where to find them) and boost them upto like 50 k launch ..!

Personally I am excited about ambulation. More where that can go rather than just the first version of it. That's me though, I like some of the social interactions on the RP side of things, also the tac room could be very useful in distributed fleet ops. That's me though.
For you think of all the people flying around causing you lag and not really having anything to do with you that are all suddenly walking around in stations housed on another cluster of servers.
You never have to set foot inside a station but you will still benefit from it.

We must move forward, not backward, upward not forward, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!
Ok then. Actually, I don't think the game needs more systems/regions added (although new shinies are, by definition, shiny, so bring it on). What it needs is better use of the systems already there, and a server that doesn't run to the corner and start sobbing at the idea of 50 people in local. By better use of what's there, I mean make it less attractive to hold huge pieces of space that you don't actively use for anything, but can defend due to the sov mechanics (cyno jammers, bridges etc).

I want to be given more "creative power" as in being able to put up a home in space, and perhaps shaping infrastructure in a system. Also I would like to see some evolvement to the combat system, beyond damage modifiers.

Edited by: Xyn Rhais on 21/03/2008 11:55:51 I think eve needs a completly new highspec hub (new empire ?), with it's own lowspec and 0.0 around it. And with it's own specific mineral/rat types (and lack of), to make commerce necessary. The trick is to get to and from there you need to go through both lowsec and 0.0 space.
That would add a new zone for new players as well as a startegicly important lowsec/0.0 zone between the two highsec zones and map room for further 0.0 expansion.
If this is to succeed, they should first add just the empire and the lowsec, then some bad truesec 0.0 system, then a few months down the line some better 0.0 system. This way it won't be the same giant 0.0 alliances moving there on day one.

Indeed - and by your own admission since these people have no intention of going there what is the point of all those empty expanses of 0.0? Expansion of Empire is the only thing that makes sense here.

Agree with Dirk here. EVE is waaay too static a universe. So static in fact I think that perhaps that's why many get bored and look to things like suicide ganking and scamming, etc. to liven things up for them. I think the storyline should be restored, as well I made a suggestion in a low sec thread that I think applies here:
Quote: Perhaps the problem (and hopefully a place to find the solution) with low sec can be found in what is lacking in the larger EVE universe, namely that everything revolves around a military industrial complex. So what if, for a change, we give players something positive to build, to work towards. Let's assume that inhabited planets in Empire space are getting what they need, perhaps "low sec" is still part of the open frontier where goods and services need to be established with stability. So let's give players an opportunity to build that stability in conjunction with the various Corps and Factions. In essence "Factions Wars" without the "Wars".
Now of course low sec still being part of the new frontier and only partially developed there are occasions for pirates, bandits, what have you, to exploit the fact that a solid regular police presence hasn't been established yet. The police forces are there, just not in the same capacity as in high sec. So those who assist in the development of low sec can opt to enlist extra protection, their own policing force to make up for what CONCORD cannot provide in full. For example you have a building contract with a Faction in a .4 system. The Faction offers police protection to the extent it can, to make up for what's missing the Faction gives permits for the contractors to enlist private security.
This to me seems a far superior way of dealing with low sec and in turn also gives players positive goals to work towards as oppose to just feeding the war machine.
In essence I think we need positive goals and purpose in EVE. I think we need to be a part of a growing adventurous story. And I think all the gaping holes between the storyline/NPC element of EVE and the player to player aspect of the game needs to be closed so EVE becomes a more congruous universe.

Edited by: Lurana Jade on 21/03/2008 16:10:15 I agree, more and new systems.
Maybe new systems, some of which have anomolous behavior which results in Cap ship instability (ie: no caps). This one would be popular with a LOT of folks I would imagine.
TO comment on another post further above: Too many 0.0 systems deserted as is? Of course they are, because anything other than a large Alliance is going to get it's ass kicked if it tries to move in. Want people to move out of Empire? Make it so small CORPS have an active chance at exploring and getting a piece of the pie, without having to deal with big Alliances. They would leave Empire in droves. Easy to say, maybe harder to figure out though.

1) there is at least a whole region that is still "inactive" currently labeled as Jove region
2) there is a lot of room between regions to pack in a few more stars, without using the Z axis. there is certainly enough empty space to add more constellations to the existing regions. and maybe they could squeeze in a whole new region or two if they shuffle everything around
3) change or enhance the sovereignty system to allow smaller alliances to more easily become residents of space owned by a larger alliance. with the current system it can be problematic to anchor POS towers in a system owned by a different alliance.
4) change or enhance alliance political mechanics to enable all that empty space to go to better use. perhaps some kind of in-game "empire" or something to associate alliances together, and somehow working that into the sovereignty system... it could at least make it A LOT easier for small alliances to "mesh" with bigger ones without threatening their authority and control of the region. coalitions of alliances already exist and could benefit from an in-game supported "empire" or "coalition" system.
just imagine... a 0.0 region that feels like you are in hi-sec, except everyone is blue, all members of many different alliances united as a single empire that claims sovereignty of the whole region. so any alliance in the empire can freely launch POS towers together in the same system.
it would probably be good to include different "levels of citizenship" in these empires. this way the super powers can accept "pet alliances" into their empire and restrict them accordingly, instead of all member alliances being automatically equals. the benefit would be in-game enforcement of the empire membership terms, and they would get an error message if they tried to break the rules. or maybe they would just get a warning and an eve-mail would be sent to their overlords if they did it anyway.

I may be alone in thinking this, but believe that there is more than enough room currently in the EVE universe. The problem is that game mechanics encourage everyone to play in comparatively few systems.
For example, there does not seem to be much point to PvPers splitting their forces and hitting 3-4 systems at a time during a war, so everybody blobs. Planetside had 'frontline' mechanics added to it, but still allowed for 'sabotage' behind enemy lines that would encourage attackers to form special ops groups, and defenders to counter them. EVE needs more creativity along these lines.
Recent design changes only seem to be headed in completely the wrong direction. The introduction of cynojammers, for instance, means that invaders will likely be facing a capital fleet while being limited to battleships. Invaders will inevitably conclude that the only answer is to bring more people to even the odds. If CCP were serious about improving gameplay, large scale design change would have to pass an 'unlikely to increase blobbing' test before being implemented.
Space in general seems too easy to hold. As commented on during the Alliance Tourney, corps and alliances end up holding space simply because they can, not because they are putting it to use.
Missioning systems experiencing lag should be adjusted to spread out the demand a bit, by moving agents if necessary or maybe carefully adding more.
The immensity of space that is EVE is not anywhere near full and could probably support 10x the current population with some creative thinking on mechanics.

I completely disagree, there are loads of systems from high sec to 0.0 that aren't used. It seems people just want something new to claim as theirs now so many alliances have claimed so much of 0.0.
You could create your own alliance, granted it would take time to get the numbers and logistics, but you too could have your own space. Are people too afraid of the work that has to be put in?, if so, maybe 0.0 isn't for you.
There are plenty of systems in low sec to grab hold of, granted there are pirots but if you put the effort in, you can defend your boundaries.
High sec, again, there are loads of systems that are left empty, or are rarely visited.
If you add more space the larger alliance will just get a bigger part of the pie, we will be left with the same problems and people will again moan "there is not enough space".
/me points to the recently added drone regions.
Granted the new areas still have bugs, but it's still new space.

I think that so far we've seen EVE expand outward. New space, new methods of holding sovereignty. Now I think that EVE will begin expanding inward:
1. Better utilization of solar systems in space - Currently all battles revolve around gates, belts, planets, and moons with the occasional safespot or exploration complex. CCP will start to create structures that are independent of celestial objects such as mini-POSes, scanning arrays, maybe even defensive systems that fire off-grid.
2. Planetary interaction - Additional resources will be added to moons and planets will be opened up for new materials. Planets can be conquered, controlled, and liberated. Pod Pilots and Corporations will field armies of Faction NPCs and ground armies.
3. Ambulation - In addition to all the normal social features, unique services will begin to emerge. New black market opportunities, player branding, etc. ---------------- Tarminic - 33 Million SP in Forum Warfare Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.79.2 |

as long as the new cluster is all 0.0 and has all new regions.... it could be a solution for the "no more room on the flat map" problem. to make it a totally separate cluster, connected by a few wormholes, that would otherwise be normal region boundaries.

I was on a visit to ccp the other day, and IIRC (I wasn't really listening the whole time) their solution to this overpopulation thingy is not to add solar systems, but to, indeed, add these walking around in stations and stuff. That way they increase the space inwards instead of expanding into infinity, and imo, a very good solution to this problem.
The thing with expanding along the z-axis is that the eve universe is disc shaped. CCP originally hired a doctor in chaos-mathematics to design stuff for them, and amongs those the way their universe was created. They started with one big gas cloud, spinning. The dust in the cloud formed clumps that had their own gravity, attracted more matter and finally was made into solar systems. That is how the planets were placed within the game. If you want to add stuff along the z-axis, hell will turn cold.
