Edited by: Psyrex on 13/04/2004 08:09:40 How does this sound? you have a load of ammo sitting in a station which you need but your needed to gaurd your friends while they mine. you switch to your assests screen and highlight the ammo you have in your hanger. right click > send drone > 300 units > drone sent.
your drone then travels off and picks up your ammo and brings it back for you.
yes you risk losing your ammo if the drone is attacked but this would only be in the low sec space since these drones would have the same rights as standard ships, and who
These drones could be cargo scanned so pilots can get a better idea of the risk/reward value. different sizes (small/med/large as usual, named version that have higher armor and speed.
You might even want to be able to place items into the drones and send them off home. you can use them to send ore home while at a mining op. this would cause trouble for the ore thief since there wouldn't be any ore to steal as its all been transfered to the local station.
you could use them to send/pickup items from a friend but the friend will receive an agreement popup like the "join gang" popup, this will stop people exploiting them to track down pilots in space. Granted Pirates could use them to collect all there ammo so they dont have to move from a gate but then the ammo has to get to them, so these drones would be a highly targetted in low sec space.
your cargo hold would still be used as some pilots wouldn't want to risk sending off there ore in a small drone.
Some people also want to use the market while in space, these drones would then go and pickup their bought items.
what do you think?

you know I can't see anything wrong with this idea.
It has uses on so many levels.
pirates/ratters - send it for more ammo and to return looted good to stations miners - send ore back to stations. carebears - send for more tissues to cry into manufacturers - send good to distant stations.
The only things I would amend are, that you have to be present to set the command sequence. To prevent any abuse. So you couldn't buy something miles away and have it transported by a drone from that station. You would have to send a drone from yourself to the location and back. and that you must be online to have the drone running. so you cant buy something 50 jumps out and expect it to have arrived when you log on next.

Pain. Looks great on other people. Its what there for. |

Edited by: Psyrex on 13/04/2004 13:39:17 yeah thats what i was getting at. sorry i missed it out. Drone gets preset commands from its mother ship but uses the tracking system from the mothership for guidence. if you log off the connection is broken and thus the drone will stop and be lost.
EDIT: this would also turn people off of the idea of logging while in a fight as they might have drones all over the place bringing equipment to them.
I'd like to hear a Dev's POV on this. --------------------------------------------- The world is a battle field, pass me my gun! The Black Ops Recruiting. combat Your 425mm Railgun I perfectly strikes XXXXXXXX, wrecking for 518.0 damage. |

Seems like a good idea. ------- Your 425mm Prototype I Gauss Gun perfectly strikes Guardian Enforcer, wrecking for 827.3 damage. |

Edited by: flummox on 13/04/2004 13:50:27 i think if you limit the cargo drones to be in the system you are in it wouldn't be too bad of an idea. but anything outside same system is a nightmare. even if you only consider the code needed to write this, and the server strain as every user would be using drones to zip all over the place to do whatever...
<edit>also, drones would become a lot bigger if they needed a warpdrive. cargo drones would take up so much space. why not just send a corpmate or other EVE friend to pick up ammo or send ore to station. i retract my initial statement. cargo drones would ruin the game...
make more friends instead.</edit>
same-system = okay no resrictions = logistical nightmare

there is a fine, but dissasterous line between a fart and a shart. i suggest you make sure which side you want to be on... |

Hadn't noticed this thread before i posted my one about retrieval drones. A bit of the same kind of idea, but i agree that they should at least give it a go.
I do agree with Flummox tho about the tracking of such things, which is why i suggested that you should only be able to control one retrieval drone per ship.

i agree with that. since (as stated above) they will have to be bigger for the warp drive and cargo space, you would probably only be able to fit a small amount in your drone bay. --------------------------------------------- The world is a battle field, pass me my gun! Cargo drones could help or hurt eve. Yes they be good ore runers and the operation in the same system your is right on but what ship could use that type of drone the cruiser drone bay would the room. A Team player and enjoy seeing npc pirate`s go BOOM. |

I could see this working out rather well. Though I would limit the drone space to 25m3 or so. You dont want to remove the role of the industrial ship for supporting mining ops.
I would also make the mining drones fairly slow with a long run to jump. So players could not use them to save valuable items when they are under attack.

I like it but they would increase lag alot.

they would need an better command interface than the present drone interface. something like the ship GUI but for drones.
