It's a good ship for a gang providing remote rep support.
If you expect to solo in a carrier you will just die horribly.

Don't listen to this. Carriers epicly own everything smaller than them. I would also like to recommend Teshkat as a potential pirating system. Smartbombing the Anjedin gate can only lead to good things for you.

Remember, Large armor repairer > Capital armor repairer and thanatos' must be shield tanked to work effectively. Oh and convo me ingame if you're smartbombing a gate solo in a carrier and I'll come assist cleaning the gate out of unnecessary ships. *coughs* ---------------

It's too bad that they aren't, really... I wouldn't mind having a flying base of operations for my black legions

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 21/03/2008 20:47:37 Carriers can tank the damage dished out by any single tactical ship. They can also put out enough damage to kill any single opponent... even if they can't always do it quickly. You face several problems with these tasks though:
1. carriers aren't known for efficient lock times. 2. a webbed battleship with a MWD running can outpace a carrier. 3. you take forever to align so if your target calls in some support you're in trouble. 4. anything smaller than a battleship is probably easier to kill with a battleship or battlecruiser than with a carrier.
>>>important>>> 5. carriers, and capital ships in general, are the least cost effective combat ships in the game when it comes to solo PvP. Your improved protection from capital repair systems does not make up for the billion extra isk you paid if all you do is pirate. Carriers are fine for supporting friendly gangs though, and they also have other uses that increase with the size of the corp/alliance that you're in. The carrier itself is just not a good pirate vessel.
edit: You can choose to take this post with a small grain of salt. I've flown with carriers many times and discussed their use with carrier pilots, but I'm still a bit over two months from using one myself (which I am training for, but probably won't get into right away seeing as I'm mainly a casual player in a solo corp right now.)

A pirate carrier on a gate is usually known as gank bait.
Within minutes, a cyno will open next to it and several dreads jump in to bbq it. You do see them hugging stations occasionally, but given their slow lock time, and inability to hit anything that can move or smaller than a BS, they kind of suck

Don't train for a carrier for pirating, unless you plan on using it for what its for, that is support primary role, sure it has fighters that do good damage which are just the sweet bonus imo. Carriers alone don't work very well against a well organised gang, but sure it can kill single targets smaller than it with ease, remember fighters die easyer than drones due to thier size. They are easyer to hit for a small gang that knows what its doing and they will fast render you useless, we have done it many times, its really not a good thing to pvp alone in them. They shine in fleet combat with remote capital reps and fighters to do some decent dps, since in fleet fights the fighters would not be considered a primary target when you got 10 or more hostile ships to kill. |
