Who are the Goons and BoBs and why are they so hated or, at least, controversial? I feel as if I'm missing an important part of EVE-history...
<sidenote>Maybe CCP should do a tutorial on them so that us noobs could get a proper EVE-history introduction? :D</sidenote>

Goons are GoonSwarm-the largest alliance in the game with other 5k members and counting. IIRC they have said many times that their goal is simply to destroy the game.
BoB is Band of Brothers one of the Super Powers of the universe, and highly uncontroversial. --- --- --- --- --- My views don't reflect those of my corporation, and definitely not those of my alliance as I don't have an alliance :p . |

BoB is like a cult. A wonderful, beautiful cult, who absolutely deserve to dominate the nullsec areas of New Eden. I flew with them for a mere two months and yet I still support them and everything they say or do in CAOD and beyond. (tbh.)
Goons just suck. Don't join them or assist them in any way.

No, they have not.

If being one of the most arrogant, elitist, cheating, border-line exploting alliances in Eve who publically announced that they meant to take over all of 0.0 before they were cut down to size in the last 6 months is "uncontroversial", then sure.

BoB = the elites, 4 year old players that dedicate massive amounts of time and effort to be the best Goons = newcomers who think they have what it takes to break Eve, if only by having so many members that the servers can't handle them

BoB used to be the big force, but then there was an incident that made them popular to hate, (a certain dev missused his powers to help them). But enough about that it's a long time ago. Anyway lots of alliances ganged up on BOB but BOB is still going strong. I used to hate BOB but they have earned my respect, they are probably the best PvP'ers in the game. Most alliances would have been exterminated if they faced the onslaught BOB has.
RESPECT!

I'd like to point out that no significant progress of any kind has been made against BoB in Delve in the past two months. Rumors indicate that the coalition who was/is attempting to destroy BoB has started to turn on each other. Eve-Tribune even wrote about this. Of course, you'd have to be a moron to have not seen that coming.

You realize that the fight didn't reach Delve except in the last 3 months or so and that BoB have gone from controlling 6 regions to not even controlling all of Delve anymore?

op: Now you understand the problem :)
Each side of the big 0.0 conflict have very different politics and view of the game.
Bob regroups most of Eve's hardcore players. Their high standards made them an ellistist group. GoonSwarm regroups mostly "newbies" (that are two years old now). Their numbers make them a very difficult force to deal with.
Bob play the game very seriously, GoonSwarm make fun of everything and everyone. Both sides have intel network that are beyond the imagination (aka "metagaming").
Bob is totalitarian, GoonSwarm is an anarchy, both sides have many allies (i won't comment the erosion of Bob's allies last year, due to the war and their will - lastly Bob cleared their naplist).
Everything oppose them. 2isk

I've only been around a few months so I'm not well experienced and the BoB was a typo, I meant controversial.

Both sides were proven to cheat (Goon modified the client several times). 1v1 I think Outbreak is still the best out of pos-warfare stuff else, yes, it's Bob. They have one third of all the titans in the game... 2isk

I know that I was in Finfleet for the tail end of 2007, and that I am intimately familiar with BoB's sovereignty history. This is irrelevant to the fact that I was only talking about the lack of progress made by BoB's enemies in 2008 in my earlier post.

The Goons come from the Something Awful forums and, at least initially, you had to be a Something Awful member (a Goon) to join Goonfleet. IIRC, it started with some forum members deciding that EvE was worth playing - or maybe playing with - and publicising it on SA. Initially their tactics involved blobs of low-value ships, but these have matured.
Contrary to the assertion above, they definitely have expressed an interest in "breaking" EvE in the name of having fun. Maybe not many times, but more than once.
BoB, as mentioned above, are a large and mature alliance. They were once the force that everybody feared. After a number of fiascos, not least the revelation that a CCP Dev had given some T2 BPOs to mates in BoB, pretty much everybody who wasn't BoB decided that they wanted to go and kill them. Be glad you weren't on the forums then, it was a mire of chest-beating and tinfoil hattery.

I'm confused now.
If I understood it correctly, Goons stand for the exact opposite to what BoB do. If this is the case, why doesn't BoB throw their overwhelming power at stopping Goons? Someone mentioned they own about 1/3 of all Titans in the game, which shows just how powerful they are, so it shouldn't be a problem.
Or is it that wardeccing on Goons isn't in BoB's best interest?

They tried, actually, and for awhile it worked. Goons, if absolutely nothing else, are very trixy crafty, and were able to come back from being stomped.
Once the T2 incident (the developer cheating incident mentioned above) happened BoB became the new target for pretty much every alliance in the game. With Goonswarm and Red Alliance leading the way, the formed "The Coalition" and they've been fighting BoB ever sense. The war has gone back and forth - for a while last year BoB was winning, but now they've been beaten back and are holed up in an area of space that is very well-fortified. As far as I know the Coalition have hit a brick wall now that all of BoB's firepower (i.e. their capital ship fleet) is concentrated in one place. ---------------- Tarminic - 34 Million SP in Forum Warfare Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.79.3 (Updated 3/24) |
